      • Single-Center Analysis of Human Papillomavirus Infection and P16INK4A Expression among Korean Patients with Penile Cancer

        <P><B>Purpose</B></P><P> This study aimed to evaluate the statuses of P16INK4A expression and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection among patients with penile cancer at a single Korean institution.</P><P><B> Patients and Methods</B></P><P> Fourteen patients with penile cancer at our center were retrospectively identified and their clinicopathological data were analyzed. The patients' HPV and P16INK4A expression status (a known tumor suppressor protein) were tested using genotyping with a DNA chip assay and immunohistochemical staining, respectively. The results regarding HPV status were compared to those from another Asian study.</P><P><B> Results</B></P><P> The mean age at diagnosis was 60 years (range: 34–86 years). The median tumor size was 3.0 cm (range: 0.6–4.7 cm). Ten tumors were located on the penile glans. Five patients tested positive for HPV DNA (5/14, 36%) and all cases involved HPV type 16 (5/5, 100%). Positive expression of P16INK4A was observed in 6 cases (6/14, 43%). Among the HPV positive cases, 80% of cases (4/5) were also positive for P16INK4A. The prevalence of HPV infection in our study (36%) was higher than in a previous Asian study (23%).</P><P><B> Conclusions</B></P><P> This is the first study to evaluate the prevalence of HPV infection and P16INK4A expression among patients with penile cancer at a single Korean institution. The prevalence of HPV (36%) was slightly higher than the results from a previous Asian study. Additional multi-center studies are needed to better understand penile cancer in Korea and to identify biomarkers that can determine high-risk cases and predict their prognosis.</P>

        The Effects of Managerial Attributes on Cost Stickiness: An Empirical Analysis of Korean Exporters and Implications for Start-ups

        Purpose – We attempted to empirically verify the effects of managerial attributes on cost stickiness in exporters. Exporters are often affected not only by external factors such as exchange rate but also by internal factors such as managerial attributes regarding their business activities. Because cost stickiness is the product of a manager’s decision-making, it has been considered that managerial attributes have a great influence on the behavior. Therefore, our study was intended to find out whether cost stickiness shows differentiated aspects depending on managerial attributes in exporters. Design/methodology – We considered two managerial attributes: CEO power and managerial overconfidence. First, CEO power was measured as CEO pay slice. In addition, managerial overconfidence was measured based on three methodologies presented by previous studies. To measure cost stickiness, we used multiple methodologies presented by prior research. Findings – The results of our empirical analysis are as follows. First, in export firms, the greater CEO power is, the greater cost stickiness is. This result suggested that export managers with great influence little respond to temporary sales decrease promptly, little reduce related production costs flexibly in preparation for future sales recovery, but leave room to endure costs for idle resources. Second, the greater managerial overconfidence is, the greater cost stickiness is. This result indicated that export managers with great overconfidence on their decision-making often view the prospect for sales recovery positively; therefore, they little respond to temporary sales decrease immediately, little reduce related production costs flexibly for future sales recovery, but leave room to endure costs for idle resources. Third, export managers with great influence in their businesses and great overconfidence in their decision-making tend to show relatively great cost stickiness. The results proposed that the combination of the two factors functions to make cost stickiness greater. Originality/value – Our study is differentiated from extant studies in that we provided empirical evidence of the effects of managerial attributes on their business activities in exporters. Specifically, we verified the effects of managerial attributes on cost stickiness in Korean exporters. The results of our study are expected to contribute to providing useful information for exporters and start-ups.

        A New Monoterpene Glycoside and Antibacterial Monoterpene Glycosides from Paeonia suffruticosa

        Antibacterial activity-guided fractionation of the $CHCl_3-MeOH$ (1:1) extract of Paeonia suffruticosa root bark furnished three monoterpene glycosides, 6-O-vanillyoxypaeoniflorin (1), mudanpioside-H (2), and galloyl-oxypaeoniflorin (3). Of the isolated compounds, compound 1 is a new compound. All isolated compounds showed broad, but moderate, antibacterial activity with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values in the range of 100 to $500\;{\mu}g/mL$ against eighteen pathogenic microorganisms of concern for public health or zoonosis.

        Capacitive Touch Systems With Styli for Touch Sensors: A Review

        <P>This paper presents the latest progress in development and applications of the capacitive touch systems (CTSs) with styli. The CTSs, which include the touch sensor, analog front-end (AFE) integrated circuit (IC), and micro-controller unit, are reviewed along with the passive and active styli. The architecture of the CTS is explained first, followed by an exploration of the touch sensors: (1) types of touch sensors, such as in-cell, on-cell, and add-on types according to the size and material, (2) AFE IC with the driving and sensing methods, and (3) passive and active styli for the CTS. Finally, the future perspectives of the CTS are given from the viewpoint of the technical developments.</P>

        Effects of Organotin Compounds on Follicular Steroidogenesis in Frogs

        Some organotin compounds such as butyltins and phenyltins are known to induce impo-sex in various marine animals and are considered to be endocrine disruptors. In this study, the effect of organotins on follicular steroidogenesis in amphibians was examined using ovarian follicles of Rana dybowskii and Rana catesbeiana. Isolated follicles were cultured for 6 or 18 h in the presence and absence of frog pituitary homogenate (FPH) or various steroid precursors, and the levels of product steroids in the culture media oassay. Among the butyltin compounds, tributyltin (TBT) strongly and dose-dependently inhibited the FPH-induced synthesis of pregnenolone () and progesterone () by the follicles. TBT also strongly suppressed the conversion of cholesterol to and partially suppressed the conversion of to . A high concentration of dibutyltin (DBT) also inhibited steroidogenesis by the follicles while monobutyltin and tetrabutyltin had negligible effects. The toxic effect of TBT or DBT was irreversible and a short time of exposure (30 min) was enough to suppress steroidogenesis. All the phenyltin compounds significantly inhibited FPH-induced synthesis by the follicles. The effective dose of 50% inhibition by diphenyltin was and those of monophenyltin and triphenyltin were and , respectively. However, none of the phenyltin compounds significantly suppressed the conversion of to -hydroxyprogesterone (-OHP) (by -hydroxylase), -OHP to androstenedione (AD) (by lyase), or AD to testosterone by the follicles. Taken together, the data show that among the steroidogenic enzymes, P450scc in the follicles is the most sensitive to organotin compounds and that an amphibian follicle culture system can be a useful screening model for endocrine disruptors.

        Transduction of Familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis-related Mutant PEP-1-SOD Proteins into Neuronal Cells

        Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the selective death of motor neurons. Mutations in the SOD1 gene are responsible for a familial form of ALS (FALS). Although many studies suggest that mutant SOD1 proteins are cytotoxic, the mechanism is not fully understood. To investigate the role of mutant SOD1 in FALS, human SOD1 genes were fused with a PEP-1 peptide in a bacterial expression vector to produce in-frame PEP-1-SOD fusion proteins (wild type and mutants). The expressed and purified PEP-1-SOD fusion proteins were efficiently transduced into neuronal cells. Neurones harboring the A4V, G93A, G85R, and D90A mutants of PEP-1-SOD were more vulnerable to oxidative stress induced by paraquat than those harboring wild-type proteins. Moreover, neurones harboring the mutant SOD proteins had lower heat shock protein (Hsp) expression levels than those harboring wild-type SOD. The effects of the transduced SOD1 fusion proteins may provide an explanation for the association of SOD1 with FALS, and Hsps could be candidate agents for the treatment of ALS.

      • Performance of a Full-Scale Biofilm System Retrofitted with an Upflow Multilayer Bioreactor as a Preanoxic Reactor for Advanced Wastewater Treatment

        <P>To enhance nitrogen removal in an existing microbial contact oxidation (MCO) system with a treatment capacity of 900 m3/d, an upflow multilayer bioreactor (UMBR) was chosen as a preanoxic reactor for the removal of organic matter and nitrate. The removal performance of the retrofitted plant was evaluated during the startup phase at a low temperature in winter. The high removal (>80%) of organic matter and suspended solids in the UMBR provided stable nitrification conditions in the MCO system, as a result of the substantial reduction in organic matter and solids loaded onto the MCO system. This treatment system showed a stable nitrogen removal efficiency of 75.3%, even in the low temperature range 7 to 10 degrees C. Phosphorus was completely removed by chemical precipitation. Production rates of excess sludge, as a function of the loads of influent flowrate and biological oxygen demand (BOD), were 0.022 kg dry solid/m3 wastewater and 0.132 kg dry solid/kg BOD.</P>

        Comparison of Chemical Constituents in Mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) Flour between Cultivation Regions and Seeding Dates

        Legumes are one of the largest families of crop plants and are widely consumed and produced for their nutritional and commercial benefits. Mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) is a legume crop that contains various functional compounds ; moreover, it has strong antioxidant properties and is becoming an increasingly important food crop. However, most previous studies on mung beans have focused on their primary metabolites. In this study, we investigated the composition and contents of phenolic compounds, fatty acids, soyasapogenol and tocopherol in mung beans cultivated in different regions and cultivated at different seeding dates. Material analysis was conducted using the following methods: LC-MS/MS, GC-FID and HPLC-ELSD. In total, 57 different samples were analyzed. Thirteen phenolic compounds were detected in mung beans. Of these, vitexin and isovitexin were the most abundant compounds, accounting for approximately 99% of phenolic compounds. The difference in phenol compounds according to the seeding dates of mung bean was not statistically significant. The total fatty acid content in beans was the highest in Pyeongchang. Significant differences in total fatty acid content were found according to the cultivation regions. Crops grown in Sohyeon and Dahyeon showed the highest soyasapogenol B content in the Suwon region, and these were the lowest in Jeonju. The total tocopherol content of beans cultivated in Dahyeon and Sohyeon was the lowest and highest in Pyeongchang. Soyasapogenol B and total tocopherol content were not significantly different according to seeding dates. This study was conducted to obtain basic data for the cultivation of mung beans with a high content of various functional materials in terms of regional specialization and optimal seeding time.

        Design of Dual-Band Bandpass Filters for Cognitive Radio Application of TVWS Band

        This paper presents a novel design for dual-band bandpass filters. The proposed filters are applicable to the carrier aggregation of the TV white space (TVWS) band and long-term evolution (LTE) band for cognitive radio applications. The lower passband is the TVWS band (470–698 MHz) whose fractional bandwidth is 40 %, while the higher passband is the LTE band (824–894 MHz) with 8 % fractional bandwidth. Since the two passbands are located very close to each other, a transmission zero is inserted to enhance the rejection level between the two passbands. The TVWS band filter is designed using magnetic coupling to obtain a wide bandwidth, and the LTE band filter is designed using dielectric resonators to achieve good insertion loss characteristics. In addition, in the proposed design, a transmission zero is placed with cross-coupling. The proposed dual-band bandpass filter is designed as a two-port filter (one input/one output) as well as a three-port filter (one common input/two outputs). The measured performances show good agreement with the simulated performances.
