Applying the notion of span in audiovisual translation

        ( Park¸ Amy ),( Cho¸ Eui Yon ) 동국대학교 영어권문화연구소 2019 영어권문화연구 Vol.12 No.2

This study sets out to examine how the English pronouns are translated into the Korean subtitles. The main aim of the study is to apply the notion of span when analyzing the translation of pronouns from English into Korean. In other words, this paper would like to argue that the notion of span may well be applied in the study of personal pronouns when the source language and target language have different linguistic systems such as English and Korean. This is to emphasize and also demonstrate the fact that due to the characteristics of the Korean language, the notion of span may be an important factor proposed by Larson in 1984. The data of this study have been divided into certain spans according to certain situations between characters from the film Bridget Jones Diary 1. The results show that the translations of Korean personal pronouns vary according to the spans between certain characters which show that the relationship changes throughout the film.

        시민교육과 한국 사회

        에이미 것만(Amy Gutmann),곽준혁(Kwak Jun-Hyeok) 고려대학교 아세아문제연구소 2009 亞細亞硏究 Vol.52 No.4

In recent years, many scholars have recognized that despite institutional reforms, South Korea is falling into what Colin Crouch coins as post-democracy. They have observed that faltering on the verge of democratic consolidation, South Korea is experiencing a paradoxical process: while it is moving fast toward constitutional democracy in which election can make government more accountable and responsible for its conduct, its citizens gradually become a passive and incoherent mass responding intermittently only to the dramatic issue set by politicians and militant political activists. Yet too often how and why the post-democratic trivialization of participatory democracy and the dramatic development of citizen movement do intersect in South Korea remains unexplained. Being concerned with these observations, this interview with Amy Gutmann aims to explore a regulative principle which can guides thinking in the ongoing process in which citizens as well as experts consider what justice requires in the case of particular conflicts in specific contexts, with special but not exclusive attention to civic education. Specifically, addressing the principles and structure of Amy Gutmann’s liberal theory of justice in light of liberal egalitarianism, deliberative democracy, democratic education, and identity politics, this interview seeks to investigate her theories of democratic education in four aspects: the plausible reconciliation of liberal egalitarianism with redistribution and participation, the realization of democratic education through deliberative democracy, the need for civic education with respect to multicultural coexistence, and the applicability of democratic education especially in South Korea which is experiencing both political indifference and ideological antagonism.

The Importance of Crisis and Failure : The Case of Saemangeum and the Green Life Theory Project

AMY LEVINE Institute for International Trade and Cooperation, 2017 Asian International Studies Review Vol.18 No.1

This paper explores the cross-disciplinary, continuous, and important roles of crisis and failure in modern South Korea. In particular, it explores the highly contested phase just before the completion of the state-led Saemangeum national development project at the end of Dae-Jung Kim's presidential term (1998-2003), and the activist mobilizations and legal battles to "Save Our Saemangeum (SOS)" ending in 2006. In addition, this paper ethnographically examines one civil leader's failed effort—a project he called Green Life Theory and then Greenism—to respond not only to Saemangeum, but also to the larger theoretical demand for an alternative to neoliberal capitalism. Ultimately, this paper argues that 1) the Saemangeum reclamation be understood as a post-authoritarian, democratic hope for cashing in and social redemption (Peterson 2009); 2) that the Green Life Theory Project is an attempt to "orchestrate time" (Cho 2015); 3) that both Saemangeum and the Green Life Theory projects in terms of endpoints (Miyazaki and Riles 2005); and 4) that both projects fail on disciplinary metrics in trying to achieve interdisciplinarity (e.g. Jean-Klein and Riles 2005; Riles 2000; Strathern 2004).

Estrogen replacement is protective to the effect of in vitro hypoxia on female rabbit bladder and pelvic floor contractile response

        Amy D. Dobberfuhl,Catherine Schuler,Robert E. Leggett,Elise J.B. De,Robert M. Levin 대한비뇨의학회 2020 Investigative and Clinical Urology Vol.61 No.4

Purpose: To explore the effect of estrogen replacement on pelvic floor and bladder contractile response to electrical field stimulation, following in vitro hypoxia in an animal model of surgical menopause. Materials and Methods: Twelve female adult rabbits were divided into three groups: control, ovariectomy, and ovariectomy with estradiol replacement. At 4 weeks animals were euthanized. Bladder, coccygeus, and pubococcygeus were isolated. Tissues were equilibrated with oxygenated Tyrodes containing glucose and stimulated with electrical field stimulation. Tissues were then stimulated under hypoxic conditions for 1 hour using nitrogenated Tyrodes without glucose. Tissues were then re-oxygenated for 2 hours and stimulated. Results: Pelvic floor required 10 times the stimulation duration (power) to achieve maximum contraction at 2 g baseline tension (10 ms duration) when compared to bladder (1 ms duration). Maximal tension generated was significantly greater for bladder than pelvic floor. Coccygeus and pubococcygeus were significantly less sensitive to the effects of hypoxia and had stable contractile response to field stimulation throughout the hour of hypoxia. Hypoxia resulted in progressive and rapid decline of bladder contractile strength. Following hypoxia, pelvic floor contractile recovery was superior to bladder. Improvement in the contractile response of both bladder and pelvic floor, during the period of post-hypoxia re-oxygenation, was significantly greater in ovariectomy animals treated with estradiol replacement. Conclusions: Replacement of estradiol at time of ovariectomy reduced oxidative stress on tissue and was protective to the effects of hypoxia on pelvic floor and bladder contractile function.

Statistical inference and visualization in scale-space for spatially dependent images

Amy Vaughan,Mikyoung Jun,Cheolwoo Park 한국통계학회 2012 Journal of the Korean Statistical Society Vol.41 No.1

SiZer (SIgnificant ZERo crossing of the derivatives) is a graphical scale-space visualization tool that allows for statistical inferences. In this paper we develop a spatial SiZer for finding significant features and conducting goodness-of-fit tests for spatially dependent images. The spatial SiZer utilizes a family of kernel estimates of the image and provides not only exploratory data analysis but also statistical inference with spatial correlation taken into account. It is also capable of comparing the observed image with a specific null model being tested by adjusting the statistical inference using an assumed covariance structure. Pixel locations having statistically significant differences between the image and a given null model are highlighted by arrows. The spatial SiZer is compared with the existing independent SiZer via the analysis of simulated data with and without signal on both planar and spherical domains. We apply the spatial SiZer method to the decadal temperature change over some regions of the Earth.

Uncut Roux-en-Y gastrojejunostomy after totally laparoscopic distal gastrectomy: Learning curve and surgical outcomes

Amy Kim,Moon-Won Yoo 대한종양외과학회 2020 Korean Journal of Clinical Oncology Vol.16 No.1

Purpose: Totally laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (TLDG) is now widely used for early gastric cancer patients, but the selection of a reconstruction method after TLDG is still controversial. Roux-en-Y gastrojejunostomy is increasingly used in expectation of less gastritis and alkaline reflux despite its technical difficulty. The uncut Roux-en-Y gastrojejunostomy (uRYGJ) retains the advantages of Roux-en-Y reconstruction but helps prevent Roux stasis syndrome. The present study aims to introduce a single surgeon’s experience of TLDG with uRYGJ and analyze the learning curve and surgical outcomes. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 124 consecutive patients who underwent TLDG with uRYGJ performed by a single surgeon between July 2014 and August 2015 at Asan Medical Center. The baseline characteristics and surgical outcomes were analyzed, and the learning curve was drawn based on the power-law model. Results: The mean total operative time was 165 minutes, and the average length of hospital stay was 6.6 days. Complications included two cases of duodenal stump leakage, two intra-abdominal bleeding, two intra-abdominal fluid collection, one wound problem, two anastomotic strictures, 14 ileus, and no anastomotic leakage. There were five cases of endoscopically proven reflux gastritis/esophagitis and no Roux stasis syndrome. There were five recurrences and one mortality during the follow-up period. The learning curve leveled at the 15th case. Conclusion: The results of our study showed the safety and feasibility of uRYGJ, and that the technical difficulty of the procedure can be overcome with a short learning curve for experienced surgeons.

Mechanism for the Increase in Human Growth Hormone with Administration of a Novel Test Supplement and Results Indicating Improved Physical Fitness and Sleep Efficiency

        Amy L. Heaton,Colleen Kelly,Jennifer Rood,Charmaine S. Tam,Frank L. Greenway 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Journal of medicinal food Vol.24 No.6

An oral test supplement increases serum human growth hormone (hGH) levels after acute administration in healthy adults. We investigated the mechanism for the increase in hGH and the effect of continued daily administration of the test supplement on measures of physical fitness and sleep efficiency. In Study 1, serum triiodothyronine (T3) was measured in samples from a prior placebo-controlled, double-blind study in which 16 healthy participants received both placebo and the test supplement in a crossover design; treatment order was randomized, and treatments were separated by a 1-week washout. In Study 2, physical fitness (VO2 max) was measured at baseline and after 2 weeks of daily administration of the test supplement (N = 12 healthy participants). Study 3 assessed daily sleep onset latency and time awake during 3 weeks of daily administration of the test supplement (N = 15 healthy participants). A fall from baseline in T3 was observed with placebo (−6.1 ± 8.5 ng/dL, P = .01). Of note, the change in T3 was smaller with the test supplement (−3.3 ± 10.7 ng/dL, P = not significant) but was not statistically different from placebo. Mean VO2 max increased by 6% from baseline after 2 weeks (P = .02). Sleep-onset latency and time awake during the night were reduced from baseline to week 3 by 22% and 65%, respectively (P = .01 and P = .02). The conservation of T3 levels suggests that the mechanism for increased hGH secretion by the test supplement is through somatostatin inhibition. Furthermore, pilot studies indicated that daily administration of the supplement improved physical fitness and sleep efficiency from baseline, effects consistent with increased endogenous hGH release.
