      • Identify Applicable Design for Environment (DfE) Tools at the Early Stages of Product Development

        Awareness of people, organizations and societies about environmental impacts has been dramatically increased in last decade. This has caused many firms and practitioners to consider environmental aspects in various areas such as product development, service, and so forth. Nowadays, manufacturing companies have come to the conclusion that making environmentally sustainable products can be their competitive advantage in the global market. To make sustainable products, organizations need to incorporate environmental issues into their product development processes. For this purpose, plenty of Design for Environment (DfE) tools have been developed thus far. Majority of these tools can be applied only at later stages of the product development process for the purpose of redesigning of products. However, the most effective way to consider environmental factors is to integrate these issues at the early stages of the process. Therefore, this paper aims at identifying applicable design for environment tools into the early stages of the product development process. In this paper, seventy-seven design for environment tools were analyzed in-depth in accordance with their fundamental attributes and features, and then were classified systematically. Based on this analysis, applicable design for environment tools into the early stages of the product development were distinguished, and recommended appropriately. Regarding to the findings of this research, only limited number of design for environment tools can be used for the early integration of environmental impacts into the product development process. It is expected that this study will help design for environment practitioners choose a proper design for environment tool for the early introduction of environmental issues, and consequently to design and develop environmentally sustainable products.

      • u-Sustainability: A New Paradigm to Measure Sustainability Performance of Manufacturing Processes

        Nowadays, manufacturing firms is struggling with serious challenges in order for effectively cooperation with multifarious chain of suppliers and acquire the right information to meet the requirements for a sustainable growth. In this context, the major challenges of companies are twofold; smart manufacturing and sustainable manufacturing. This research, by extending Smart Manufacturing Execution System (SMES) towards sustainability, sets out Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and then proposes a new approach called “u-Sustainability” to measure and optimize sustainability performance of manufacturing processes. The u-Sustainability, based on UbiDMR paradigm, meaning product design, manufacturing and recycling via ubiquitous computing technology, includes “Pillar of u-Sustainability” which implements u-LCA, draws up economic and social sustainability performance reports by using the processed information. The main objective of this research is to introduce KPIs for sustainability of manufacturing processes, and assess its performance by “u-Sustainability”, based on ubiquitous and IT technology.

        합성, 2,4-Diaryl-1,3-selenazoles의 항바이러스 활성도와 반응

        가진 1차 arylselenocarboxylic amide의 고리화는 여러가지 새로운 2,4-diaryl-1,3-selenazoles에 사용되었다. 염소, 브롬, 요오드를 사용한 2,4-diaryl-1,3-selenazoles의 할로겐화는 좋은 수율의 새로운 1,1-dihalo-2,4-diaryl-1,3-selenazoles를 준다. AIDS virus(HIV-1 and HIV-2)에 대하여 몇몇의 1,1-dihalo-2,4-diaryl-1,3-selenazoles의 항바이러스 활성도를 검사하였다. 그것들은 HIV-1에 대한 약간의 대생물활성을 보였다. 모든 화합물은 원소분석, 1H NMR 그리고 질량 분광분석 정보로 구조분석 하였다. 2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-4-(4-bromophenyl)-1,3-selenazole의 결정구조도 보였다. cyclization of primary arylselenocarboxylic amides with a-bromoketones afforded a variety of new 2,4-diaryl-1,3-selenazoles. Halogenation of the 2,4-diaryl-1,3-selenazoles with chlorine, bromine and iodine gave the new 1,1-dihalo-2,4-diaryl-1,3-selenazoles in good yields. Antiviral activity of some 1,1-dihalo-2,4-diaryl-1,3-selenazoles has been tested against AIDS virus (HIV-1 and HIV-2). They showed some bioactivity against HIV-1. All compounds were characterized by their elemental analysis, 1H NMR and mass spectroscopic data. The crystal structure of 2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-4-(4-bromophenyl)-1,3-selenazole displays the molecular configuration.

        Predictors of Hepatitis B Preventive Behavioral Intentions in Healthcare Workers

        Background: Healthcare workers’ practices regarding hepatitis B have an important effect on the control of this problem in workplaces. Methods: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was used to investigate the role of knowledge, cues to action, and risk perceptions as predictors of preventive behavioral intentions for hepatitis B among healthcare works in Broujen, Iran (n ¼ 150). History of hepatitis B vaccination, hepatitis B surface antigen test, and demographic characteristics were investigated. The psychometric properties of the questionnaire were established. Results: Those who had a history of hepatitis B surface antigen test had a statistically significant higher level of risk perceptions (30.89 4.08 vs. 28.41 3.93, p < 0.01) and preventive behavioral intentions (5.05 1.43 vs. 4.45 1.29, p < 0.01). The mean score of cues to action was significantly correlated with age and work history (r ¼ 0.20, p ¼ 0.02 and r ¼ 0.19, p ¼ 0.02). Preventive behavioral intentions were significantly correlated with cues to action and risk perceptions but not with knowledge level. Cognitional factors were responsible for a 17% change in observed variance of preventive behavioral intentions, which was statistically significant. Conclusion: Risk perceptions were the most important determinant of preventive behavioral intentions for hepatitis B among health personnel; thus, emphasizing risk perceptions is recommended in educational programs aimed at increasing health personnel’s practices regarding hepatitis B.

        Comparison the effect of MQL, wet and dry turning on surface topography, cylindricity tolerances and sustainability

        The increasing needs for the production of high quality parts require the use of new techniques to produce parts with higher precision. One of these modern techniques is minimum quantity lubricant (MQL) machining. In this paper, the effects of MQL, wet and dry machining on surface characteristic and geometric tolerances in turning of parts made of AISI 1045 steel were investigated. The influences of machining parameters i.e. feed rate and cutting speed as well as MQL parameters, namely air pressure and flow rate on surface topography, cutting force and cylindricity tolerance were studied. In addition, dry, wet, and MQL machining were compared to study the performance of different cooling systems. In the final step, the Pugh matrix approach was implemented to compare different cooling strategies in terms of sustainable production. According to the obtained results, MQL machining significantly improved the output parameters in AISI 1045 steel turning. By using MQL system, not only was the topography of machined surfaces improved and parts with tighter tolerances produced, but sustainability criteria were also improved. Based on sustainability assessment results, MQL turning was superior to wet and dry conditions in terms of the environmental impact, operator heath, manufacturing economy and production efficiency.

        Sequence-based 5-mers highly correlated to epigenetic modifications in genes interactions

        One of the main concerns in biology is extracting sophisticated features from DNA sequence for gene interaction determination, receiving a great deal of researchers’ attention. The epigenetic modifications along with their patterns have been intensely recognized as dominant features affecting on gene expression. However, studying sequenced-based features highly correlated to this key element has remained limited. The main objective in this research was to propose a new feature highly correlated to epigenetic modifications capable of classification of genes. In this paper, classification of 34 genes in PPAR signaling pathway associated with muscle fat tissue in human was performed. Using different statistical outlier detection methods, we proposed that 5-mers highly correlated to epigenetic modifications can correctly categorize the genes involved in the same biological pathway or process. Thirty-four genes in PPAR signaling pathway were classified via applying a proposed feature, 5-mers strongly associated to 17 different epigenetic modifications. For this, diverse statistical outlier detection methods were applied to specify the group of thoroughly correlated genes. The results indicated that these 5-mers can appropriately identify correlated genes. In addition, our results corresponded to GeneMania interaction information, leading to support the suggested method. The appealing findings imply that not only epigenetic modifications but also their highly correlated 5-mers can be applied for reconstructing gene regulatory networks as supplementary data as well as other applications like physical interaction, genes prioritization, indicating some sort of data fusion in this analysis.
