This study is based on the application of a new version of Gu and Johnson’s Vocabulary Learning Questionnaire. The questionnaire contained 52 items which deal with the use of seven different vocabulary strategies, namely, metacognition, inferencing, dictionary use, note-taking, practicing, codifying and activation. It was administered to 100 undergraduates in the Primary Education teaching degree of two different proficiency levels - 42 had a B1 level of English and 58 a B2 level - and educational background, where 53 had a bilingual educational background and 47 had received English instruction in a non-bilingual context. The purpose of the study is to explore the vocabulary learning strategies used by this group of participants and see whether the variables of proficiency and formal language learning context - bilingual or non-bilingual - determine the type of vocabulary strategies used. A quantitative methodology was adopted where both descriptive and inferential statistics were applied for data analysis. Results show that inferencing and dictionary use ranked the list among the participants, whereas metacognition and activation were at the last positions. No significant differences were found in terms of proficiency. However, the bilingual variable did make a difference in the use of certain strategies. On the basis of these results, our research encourages the promotion of vocabulary learning strategies, paying special attention to those which require high cognitive effort such as metacognition and activation.
Cuerpos de Policía en Jalisco: integración social, desafíos laborales y perspectivas de mejora

Garantizar la seguridad y la protección de los ciudadanos es el principal objetivo del Cuerpo de Policía; además entre sus funciones están el mantenimiento del orden, prevención y lucha contra el delito, así como la colaboración directa con la comunidad. Entonces, los policías son piezas clave para el bienestar y desarrollo de la sociedad mexicana. Esta investigación cuantitativa tiene el objetivo mostrar el panorama actual de las miembros de corporaciones de seguridad pública en el estado de Jalisco, México; identificando la realidad de las condiciones laborales y las áreas de mejora para un escenario futurible óptimo. El estudio está basado en una encuesta a 43 agentes, donde los resultados afirman que las prestaciones de ley siguen siendo insuficientes y la falta de formación permanente y continua en diversas áreas policiales y de derechos humanos marcan una diferencia entre la figura que se espera del policía jalisciense. Ensuring the safety and protection of citizens is the main objective of the Police Force; additionally, among their functions are maintaining order, preventing and fighting crime, as well as direct collaboration with the community. Therefore, police officers are key pieces for the welfare and development of society. This quantitative research aims to show the current panorama of members of public security corporations in the state of Jalisco, Mexico; identifying the reality of working conditions and areas for improvement for an optimal future scenario. The study is based on a survey of 43 agents, where the results affirm that legal benefits remain insufficient and the lack of permanent and continuous training in various police and human rights areas marks a difference from the expected figure of the Jalisco police officer.

Educational policies are actions undertaken by a government for the conservation and improvement of teaching practices and outcomes. At times, these policies act in forms of production and supply that determine the course of education of a country. Mexico is a country that every six-years, it evaluates, modifies, and updates its educational policies to try to provide quality education. With the presidential succession of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and the implementation of the Fourth Transformation (T4), which can be understood as a transition from one administration to a new one that gradually applies and makes changes in all educational areas. In this context, the New Mexican School, established in 2018, is subject to an educational policy created to counter the 2013 Educational Reform of former President Enrique Peña Nieto. This research is a comparative analysis between both presidential proposals in how each aim to achieve excellence in education and second, a qualitative study to verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the reforms. The purpose of the research is to reveal how much basic education teachers know, the scope of both educational proposals and the impact on schools. Las políticas educativas son las acciones emprendidas por un gobierno para la conservación y mejora de las prácticas de enseñanza, además son la forma de producción y oferta con las que se determina la educación de un país. México es un país que cada sexenio modifica, evoluciona y actualiza sus políticas educativas para intentar brindar una educación de calidad. Con la sucesión presidencial de Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) y la implementación de la Cuarta Transformación (4T), que se puede entender como una transición de un régimen a otro nuevo, aplicando cambios gradualmente en cada una de sus áreas. En este contexto surge la Nueva Escuela Mexicana, establecida en 2018, siendo una política educativa creada para contrarrestar la Reforma Educativa de 2013 del expresidente Enrique Peña Nieto. La presente investigación es primero un análisis comparativo entre ambas propuestas presidenciales para alcanzar la tan anhelada educación con excelencia y segundo un estudio cualitativo para comprobar la eficacia y eficiencia de las reformas. La investigación tiene como finalidad dar a conocer qué tanto conocen los docentes de la educación básica, del alcance de ambas propuestas educativas y del impacto en las escuelas.

En mayo de 2023 la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) decretó el final de la emergencia sanitaria internacional provocada por la propagación del COVID-19. Después de la pandemia la OMS sugiere estar preparados para futuros eventos similares; integrar la vacunación contra el coronavirus dentro de la programación de las vacunas a lo largo de la vida; además de seguir apoyando las investigaciones para prevenir epidemias futuras. La pandemia trajo consigo no solo problemas sanitarios y económicos, sino educativos también; adaptarse a la formación en línea no fue una tarea fácil ni para los estudiantes, menos para los docentes, después de la pandemia el escenario educativo se ha modificado a la nueva normalidad; por lo que el objetivo de este estudio cuantitativo, descriptivo y transversal es analizar el contexto durante y pospandémico del rendimiento académico en los universitarios mexicanos y coreanos. A través de una encuesta aplicada a universitarios, que arroja valiosa información sobre el desempeño académico durante y posterior a la pandemia. De este modo rescatando los nuevos retos en la educación superior a los que se enfrentan México y Corea del Sur.
Validation of a non-linear hinge model for tensile behavior of UHPFRC using a Finite Element Model

Nowadays, the characterization of Ultra-High Performance Fiber-Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) tensile behavior still remains a challenge for researchers. For this purpose, a simplified closed-form non-linear hinge model based on the Third Point Bending Test (ThirdPBT) was developed by the authors. This model has been used as the basis of a simplified inverse analysis methodology to derive the tensile material properties from load-deflection response obtained from ThirdPBT experimental tests. In this paper, a non-linear finite element model (FEM) is presented with the objective of validate the closedform non-linear hinge model. The state determination of the closed-form model is straightforward, which facilitates further inverse analysis methodologies to derive the tensile properties of UHPFRC. The accuracy of the closed-form non-linear hinge model is validated by a robust non-linear FEM analysis and a set of 15 Third-Point Bending tests with variable depths and a constant slenderness ratio of 4.5. The numerical validation shows excellent results in terms of load-deflection response, bending curvatures and average longitudinal strains when resorting to the discrete crack approach.

<P>The variety of isotopes in cosmic rays allows us to study different aspects of the processes that cosmic rays undergo between the time they are produced and the time of their arrival in the heliosphere. In this paper, we present measurements of the isotopic ratios H-2/He-4, He-3/He-4, Li-6/Li-7, Be-7/(Be-9+Be-10), and B-10/B-11 in the range 0.2-1.4 GeV of kinetic energy per nucleon. The measurements are based on the data collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, AMS-01, during the STS-91 flight in 1998 June.</P>
