Shape control of cable structures considering concurrent/sequence control

2014 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.52 No.5

In this study, the control of the shape of pre-stressed cable structures and the effective control element were examined. The process of deriving the displacement control equations using the force method was explained, and the concurrent control scheme (CCS) and the sequence control scheme (SCS) were proposed. To explain the control scheme process, the quadrilateral cable net model was adopted and classified into a regular model and an irregular model for the analysis of the control results. In the control analysis of the regular model, the CCS and SCS analysis results proved reliable. For the SCS, the errors occur in the control stage and varied according to the control sequence. In the control analysis of the irregular model, the CCS analysis result also proved relatively reliable, and the SCS analysis result with the correction of errors in each stage was found nearly consistent with the target shape after the control. Finally, to investigate an effective control element, the Geiger cable dome was adopted. A set of non-redundant elements was evaluated in the reduced row echelon form of a coefficient matrix of control equations. Important elements for shape control were also evaluated using overlapping elements in the element sets, which were selected based on cable adjustments.

Displacement and force control of complex element structures by Matrix Condensation

        Najmadeen M. Saeed,Alan S.K. 2016 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.59 No.6

A direct and relatively simple method for controlling nodal displacements and/or internal bar forces has been developed for prestressable structural assemblies including complex elements (“macroelements”, e.g., the pantographic element), involving Matrix Condensation, in which structural matrices being built up from matrices of elementary elements. The method is aimed at static shape control of geometrically sensitive structures. The paper discusses identification of the most effective bars for actuation, without incurring violation in bar forces, and also with objective of minimal number of actuators or minimum actuation. The advantages of the method is that the changes for both force and displacement regimes are within a single formulation. The method can also be used for adjustment of bar forces to either reduce instances of high forces or increase low forces (e.g., in a cable nearing slack).

Shape morphing and adjustment of pantographic morphing aerofoil section structure

Najmadeen M. Saeed,Alan S.K. 2019 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.24 No.2

This study concerns with morphing structures, e.g. as applied in the aerospace industry. A morphing aerofoil structure capable of variable geometry was developed, which was shown to be able to cater for the different aerodynamic requirements at different stages of flight. In this work, the useful and relatively simple method has been applied, which provides a direct method for calculating required morphing shape displacements via finding the most effective bar through calculating bar sensitivity to displacement and calculating set of length actuations for bar assembly to control/adjust shape imperfection of prestressable structural assemblies including complex elements (“macro-elements”, e.g., the pantographic element), involving Matrix Condensation. The technique has been verified by experiments on the physical model of an aerofoil shaped morphing pantographic structure. Overall, experimental results agree well with theoretical prediction. Furthermore, the technique of multi-iteration adjustment was presented that effective in eliminating errors that occur in the practical adjustment process itself. It has been demonstrated by the experiments on the physical model of pantographic morphing structure. Finally, the study discusses identification of the most effective bars with the objective of minimal number of actuators or minimum actuation.

Information Technology and Electronics : Original Article ; A Simple Multispectral Imaging Algorithm for Detection of Defects on Red Delicious Apples

        ( Hoyoung Lee ),( Chun Chieh Yang ),( Moon S. Kim ),( Jongguk Lim ),( Byoung Kwan Cho ),( Alan Lefcourt ),( Kuanglin Chao ),( Colm D. Everard ) 한국농업기계학회 2014 바이오시스템공학 Vol.39 No.2

Purpose: A multispectral algorithm for detection and differentiation of defective (defects on apple skin) and normal Red Delicious apples was developed from analysis of a series of hyperspectral line-scan images. Methods: A fast line-scan hyperspectral imaging system mounted on a conventional apple sorting machine was used to capture hyperspectral images of apples moving approximately 4 apples per second on a conveyor belt. The detection algorithm included an apple segmentation method and a threshold function, and was developed using three wavebands at 676 nm, 714 nm and 779 nm. The algorithm was executed on line-by-line image analysis, simulating online real-time line-scan imaging inspection during fruit processing. Results: The rapid multispectral algorithm detected over 95% of defective apples and 91% of normal apples investigated. Conclusions: The multispectral defect detection algorithm can potentially be used in commercial apple processing lines.

Vol.11 No.2

A cable structures have the advantage that cover a large space without column but it is very sensitive to deal with shape control because of its flexibility. Especially, location of control member and needed elongation of member are important things. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is studied on displacement control technique for pre-stressed cable structures by force method considering order of control. The layout of this paper is as follows. Firstly, in section 2, the control technique by force method for cable structures is given. Secondly, section 3 briefly introduces simple cable net in order to apply control technique considering ordering of actuator. Finally, more complex example for effective member and the conclusion are in section 4 and 5, respectively.
