        Effect of Light and Feed Restriction During Rearing on Production Performance of Egg Strain Layers

        432 Babcock ISA white leghorn pullets reared for 8 weeks on a standard managemental conditions were exposed to feed/nutrient and light restrictions from 9 to 20 weeks of age. Four feeding regimes i. e. 100, 85 or 70 percent of the recommended allowance and low energy (2,500 Kcal/kg) low protein (13% CP) ration were fed each in the three light regimes i. e. (A) Natural day light starting from 13.24 hr/day at 8 weeks of age and ending 10.41 hr/day at the end of 20 weeks; (B) Constant 11 hr/day light and (C) starting with 13 hr/day at 8 weeks and decreasing @ 20 min/week till 20 weeks of age. At the age of 20 weeks all the birds were shifted to separate cages under uniform lighting feeding and management. During the 21st week light was increased to 12 hr a day and thereafter with an increase of 30 min per week, increased to 16 hr a day at the age of 29 weeks. From 20 weeks onward till 72 week age, all the birds were offered commercial layer rations ad libitum, prepared according to climatic conditions. The results of the study revealed that birds reared under natural and constant light had higher weights than decreasing light, yet they could not out perform during production period. The effect of feed and nutrient restriction, on the other hand, was found significant during rearing as well as production period. The birds exposed to higher level of feed and those exposed to nutrient restriction were lighter in weight. The 100% fed birds laid their first egg at an early age. However, those reared on 85% of the recommendation excelled all other groups in terms of produced number of eggs, egg mass, hen housed and hen day production and net returns.

        Indigin, alkylated xanthene (1) and indigoferic acid (2) have been isolated from the chloroform soluble fraction of Indigofera oblongifolia, along with β-sitosterol (3) and 3-hydroxybenzoic acid (4), which are reported for the first time from this species. Their structures were determined through spectroscopic techniques. Both the new compounds 1 and 2 showed significant activity against enzyme lipoxygenase, while 2 further showed moderate inhibition against BChE.

        System Identification of an Airship using Trust Region Reflective Least Squares Algorithm

        Lighter than air vehicles present feasible solutions to several problems in aviation industry. Dynamicmodeling of airships, however, poses enhanced complexities due to the effects of buoyancy-based static lift and virtualmass and inertia. System identification is an established technique for modeling aerial vehicles, but it generallyrequires huge amount of flight data, acquired through costly sensors operating at high sampling rates. Earlier airshipidentification works have used output/filter error methods, evolution strategies and subspace identification methods;all using large sets of estimation data. In this research, the longitudinal dynamics of a 30 ft long unmanned airshiphave been modeled using very less estimation data. During airship’s flight experiment, flight data was recorded at aminimal sampling frequency of 8 Hz, using low-cost sensors. The less estimation data was compensated by iterativeestimation technique, instead of one-step estimation. The flight data was subjected to trust region reflective leastsquares algorithm that is based on a relatively new and efficient optimization method. The model estimation qualitywas quantified by residual analysis and Akaike’s criterion of final prediction error. The promising cross-validationresults show that the adopted identification approach is suitable and cost-effective for modeling of complex airshipdynamics.

        Optimization of Flame Retardancy & Mechanical Performance of Jute-glass/Epoxy Hybrid Composites

        One of the limiting factors of natural fiber composites is their lower flame retardancy (FR) and mechanicalstrength as compared to the glass and other synthetic fiber composites. In this research, FR and mechanical properties of thehybrid jute-glass/epoxy composites were optimized. In the first part, different percentages (1 %, 2 % & 3 %) of zirconiumphosphate (ZrP) particles were mixed in epoxy resin to optimize the flame retardancy and mechanical properties of jute/epoxy composites. 3 % ZrP loaded composite showed improved FR and mechanical (tensile and impact) properties followedby 2 % and 1 % respectively. In the second part, optimized percentage of ZrP particles (3 %) was used to fabricate two (02)jute-glass hybrid epoxy composites, and their mechanical (tensile, flexural and impact) and FR properties were evaluated. Hybrid (H1) samples showed better mechanical and FR properties due to presence of glass layer on the outer side ofcomposite with 3 % ZrP particles loading.

        Nephroprotective potential of Quercus infectoria galls against experimentally induced diabetic nephropathy in rats through inhibition of renal oxidative stress and TGF-β

        Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the leading cause of death in diabetic patients and the current treatment options available have a limited significance. The insect galls of Quercus infectoria are traditionally important in the treatment of numerous diseases including diabetes. Hence, the present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of Q. infectoria gall extract (QIGE) against experimental DN. Type 2 diabetes was induced by feeding rats with a high-fat diet (HFD) initially for 5 weeks, followed by a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ, 35 mg/kg bw/ day). QIGE was administered to the rats orally at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg bw/day, respectively. At the end of the experimental period, various glycemic and renal function parameters were evaluated in the serum, urine and kidney tissues. The QIGE treatment significantly (p < .001) reduced the levels of fasting blood glucose, serum lipid profile, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and homeostasis assessment of insulin resistance in treated rats as compared to diabetic control rats. Markers of oxidative stress and the expression of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) in the kidneys of diabetic rats were significantly (p < .001) normalized by QIGE administration. QIGE prevents the development of DN via the inhibition of hyperglycemiainduced oxidative stress and renal TGF-β expression and is, therefore, a potential therapeutic agent in the treatment of diabetic complications, especially DN.
