Visual Servoing Based on Efficient Histogram Information

The robustness of a visual servoing task depends mainly on the efficiency of visual selections capturedfrom a sensor at each robot’s position. A task function could be described as a regulation of the values sentvia the control law to the camera velocities. In this paper we propose a new approach that does not depend onmatching and tracking results. Thus, we replaced the classical minimization cost by a new function based onprobability distributions and Bhattacharyya distance. To guarantee more robustness, the information related tothe observed images was expressed using a combination of orientation selections. The new visual selections arecomputed by referring to the disposition of Histograms of Oriented Gradients (HOG) bins. For each bin we assigna random variable representing gradient vectors in a particular direction. The new entries will not be used toestablish equations of visual motion but they will be directly inserted into the control loop. A new formulation ofthe interaction matrix has been presented according to the optical flow constraint and using an interpolation functionwhich leads to a more efficient control behaviour and to more positioning accuracy. Experiments demonstrate therobustness of the proposed approach with respect to varying work space conditions.

<P>Hydroxyurea (HU) has been used clinically to reduce the frequency of painful crisis and the need for blood transfusion in sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. However, the mechanisms underlying such beneficial effects of HU treatment are still not fully understood. Studies have indicated a weak correlation between clinical outcome and molecular markers, and the scientific quest to develop companion biophysical markers have mostly targeted studies of blood properties under hypoxia. Using a common-path interferometric technique, we measure biomechanical andmorphological properties of individual red blood cells in SCD patients as a function of cell density, and investigate the correlation of these biophysical properties with drug intake as well as other clinically measured parameters. Our results show that patient-specific HU effects on the cellular biophysical properties are detectable at normoxia, and that these properties are strongly correlated with the clinically measured mean cellular volume rather than fetal hemoglobin level.</P>

Profitability and Stability of GCC Islamic Banks

The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of corporate governance on profitability and stability of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) banking sector using panel data for Islamic banks over the period from 2003 to 2018. We estimate equations employing the pooled ordinary least square (OLS), the panel generalized least square (GLS) random effect (RE), the two-step system generalized method of moments (GMM), and the robust estimation approach to control for heterogeneity, endogeneity and outliers in the data. We find clear evidence that bank corporate governance matters in explaining the financial performance of Islamic GCC banks. We find a positive association between Shari’ah board and bank profitability and stability. We also find that board size loads positively on Z-score and negatively on bank profitability. The evidence also shows that CEO power has a negative impact on profitability and stability. However, board independence and shareholders independence do not exhibit a significant effect on both bank profitability and stability. These findings have implications for the authorities to establish several regulations related to Islamic finance in order to enhance the performance and soundness of Islamic banking industry as well as the stability of the whole financial system in the GCC region.

Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a fibrous interstitial pneumonia that causes damage to the lung tissue and thus alters all respiratory functions. In this study, we aim to investigate the therapeutic effects of fresh leaves of Eucalyptus globulus extracts on bleomycin (BLM)-induced (PF). Twenty-four rats were divided into four groups. The control group received no treatment, the BLM group received only intratracheally BLM (2 mg/kg), the essential water of Eucalyptus globulus (EWEG) group underwent administration of BLM followed by E. globulus hydrosol (2000 mg/kg), and the essential oil of Eucalyptus globulus (EOCG) group received BLM followed by E. globulus essential oil (10 mg/kg). Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis showed that the main compounds of EOEG and EWEG are eucalyptol and spathulenol. Obtained results showed that BLM-induced PF caused a large accumulation of lymphocytes and monocytes in lung bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, a high fibrosis score, and an inflammatory index coupled to an oxidative stress state assessed by an increase in lipid peroxidation and depletion of the activities of antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutase and catalase. Otherwise, the treatment with EWEG and EOEG reversed the deleterious effects of reactive oxygen species and the inflammation raised by BLM. E. globulus extracts could improve BLM-induced PF, thus suggesting that the latter could serve as a potential therapeutic approach for PF.

The identification of substitute products for the replacement of wheat flours for paste and bread is a strategy which may help to overcome the wheat yield problems and to meet the huge consumption rates in Tunisia. In this respect, chickpea flour can provide good opportunities. Nevertheless, seed beetles were the major constraints to achieve this goal. This paper presents extensive data on the pest status of Callosobruchus maculatus infesting chickpea in relation to its damage on chickpea seeds and flour. Data on population dynamics, growth and demographic parameters, economic injury level (EIL) and impact on functional and physical properties under two food supply conditions were studied. Results revealed that C. maculatus is a major pest altering nutritional properties of stored chickpea. Our results showed that the food supplies influence the reproductive behavior and demographic traits of C. maculatus leading to significant impacts on seed germination, weight loss and functional and physical properties. Under food optimal conditions, fertility rates were 38.1 and 47.2% respectively for Amdoun 1 and Beja 1. Moreover, the intrinsic rate of increase r and the finite rate of increase λ reached, respectively, 0.057 and 1.06 ♀/♀/days for Amdoun 1 and 0.048 and 1.05 ♀/♀/days for Beja 1. On the other hand, results showed that germination reduction depended on C. maculatus infestation level. Moreover, this work pointed out the variability of EILs with host varieties. Results also revealed that C. maculatus seed infestation led to nutritional changes in the seeds. The proximate seed composition was significantly influenced by variety and seeds category. Increases in percentages of protein (33.05 and 22.53% for 53 Amdoun 1), moisture (10.80 and 10.67% for Amdoun 1) and ash have been observed in infested seeds; decreases were observed in percentages of crude fat, carbohydrates (47.96 and 58.69% for Amdoun 1) and nutritional values (355.90 and 367.51 kcal for Amdoun 1) for the same infested seeds.
Contrast-dependent saturation adjustment for outdoor image enhancement

<P>Outdoor images captured in bad-weather conditions usually have poor intensity contrast and color saturation since the light arriving at the camera is severely scattered or attenuated. The task of improving image quality in poor conditions remains a challenge. Existing methods of image quality improvement are usually effective for a small group of images but often fail to produce satisfactory results for a broader variety of images. In this paper, we propose an image enhancement method, which makes it applicable to enhance outdoor images by using content-adaptive contrast improvement as well as contrast-dependent saturation adjustment. The main contribution of this work is twofold: (1) we propose the content-adaptive histogram equalization based on the human visual system to improve the intensity contrast; and (2) we introduce a simple yet effective prior for adjusting the color saturation depending on the intensity contrast. The proposed method is tested with different kinds of images, compared with eight state-of-the-art methods: four enhancement methods and four haze removal methods. Experimental results show the proposed method can more effectively improve the visibility and preserve the naturalness of the images, as opposed to the compared methods.
