In Silico Study of Human Gap Junction Beta-2 Protein by Homology Modeling

        Abida Shehzadi,Khalid Masood 한국유전체학회 2010 Genomics & informatics Vol.8 No.2

Asp66his, Asp54Lys, and Asp50Asn are mutations in connexin 26 that are observed in the clinic and give rise to autosomal dominant syndromes. They are the result of point mutations in the human gap junction β-2 gene. In order to investigate the structural mechanism of Bart-Pumphrey Syndrome, Keratitis-Ichthyosis-Deafness Syndrome, and Vohwinkel Syndrome, homology modeling was carried out. Asp66 has direct contact with Asn62 by two hydrogen bonds in the wild-type protein, and in Asp66His, the biggest change observed is a tremendous energy increase caused by hydrogen bond breakage to Asn62. Shifts in the side chain and new hydrogen bond formation are observed for Lys54 compared to the wild-type protein (Asn54) and result in closer contact to Val84. Asp50Asn causes a significant decrease in bond energy, and residual charge reversal repels the ion and metabolites and, hence, inhibits their transportation. Such perturbations are likely to be a factor contributing to abnormal functioning of ion channels, resulting cell death and disease.

Asp66his, Asp54Lys, and Asp50Asn are mutations in connexin 26 that are observed in the clinic and give rise to autosomal dominant syndromes. They are the result of point mutations in the human gap junction ${\beta}-2$ gene. Structural, magnetic and electronic structure studies of NdFe1−<i>x</i>Ni<i>x</i>O3 (0 ≤ <i>x</i> ≤ 0.3)

        Bashir, Abida,Ikram, M,Kumar, Ravi,Thakur, P,Chae, K H,Choi, W K,Reddy, V R IOP Pub 2009 Journal of Physics, Condensed Matter Vol.21 No.32

<P>We present here the structural, electronic structure, magnetic and Mossbauer studies of NdFe1-xNixO3 (0 <= x <= 0.3) samples. All the samples exhibit a single-phase orthorhombic structure with space group Pbnm. The near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) studies reveal that, with the Ni substitution at Fe sites, a new spectral feature about 1.5 eV lower than the pre-edge structure of NdFeO3 in the O K edge is observed due to the 3d contraction effect and is growing monotonically with the increase of Ni concentration. The Fe L-3,L-2, Ni L-3,L-2 and Nd M-5,M-4 edges confirm the trivalent state of Fe, Ni and Nd ions. The Mossbauer spectra fitted with two Zeeman sextets confirm the different surroundings of Ni around Fe ions. With the increase in Ni concentration, the sextets are broadened. The increase of quadrupole splitting and the decrease of the hyperfine field suggest the change in the ordered regime of the system. The magnetic behaviour at low temperatures is explained in the context of competition among moments of rare earth (Nd) and transition metal ions (Fe/Ni). The strong paramagnetic contribution of the Nd magnetic sublattice and spin flip phenomenon is observed from the temperature dependence of zero-field-cooled and field-cooled magnetization where spin crossover is observed. The isothermal hysteresis loops show a decrease of magnetization and increase of coercivity with the increase in temperature and complements magnetization versus temperature. The results are explained on the basis of the spin reorientation phenomenon.</P>

Single and combined effects of Cu and Pb on life history traits of Lycosa terrestris and Pardosa birmanica (Araneae, Lycosidae)

        Butt Abida,Aziz Nida 한국응용곤충학회 2023 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.26 No.1

Heavy metals are known to modulate the life history traits of spider species. This study aimed to explore the divergence in life-history traits, including survival, growth, development, and reproduction, in Pardosa birmanica and Lycosa terrestris housed on artificial soil or fed artificial food containing10mM of CuSO 4 and10mM of PbCl 2 either separately or in a binary mixture(i.e., 10 mM CuSO 4 + 10 mM PbCl 2 ) from 4 th to 8th instars under lab oratory conditions. The results revealed that all metals treatments caused developmental delays, and reduced growth rate. Metals treated females laid lower number of eggs with high hatching success but prolonged hatching time. The co-exposure of metals had great potential to affect the life-history traits of spiders than did Cu or Pb alone, specially by dietary uptake. This study demonstrated that the lifehistory traits of spider’s species provided sensitive endpoints and biomarkers for ecotoxicological risk assessments. Spiders are beneficial sentinel species and bioindicators because they help us monitor the risk to the organisms themselves and the ecosystem.

        1980년대 한국 제조업 무역결정요인 분석

        살레 하마드 아비드(Saleh Hamad Abida),유일선(Il-Seon Yoob) 한국무역연구원 2020 무역연구 Vol.16 No.1

Purpose- The purpose of this study was to examine what determinants had an effect on the structural change of trade which had occurred to Korean manufacturing industry in 1980s when Korea experienced a rapid economic growth. Design/methodology/approach- After Leontief (1954)’s empirical analysis, Heckscher-Ohlin theorem was extended into multi-factor trade model including human capital. It was summed up as Heckscher-Ohlin-Vanek (HOV) equation: AT=V-sVw. This equation which consists of three variables-trade (T), factor intensity matrix (A) and relative abundance (V-sVw)-provides the theoretical base for the empirical test. As for the method of empirical test, I used logit analysis designed for the binary variable. This method makes it possible to test the correlation between the export probability of one goods and determinants of trade. Findings- According to the results of logit analysis, in early 1980s, because Korea was abundant in labor, labor was net-exported, while physical capital and human capital were net-imported. But in late 1980s, labor and human capital were net-exported, while physical capital was net-imported. It is found that human capital factor had emerged as significant factor when it comes to explaining the structural change of trade in Korean manufacturing industry in 1980s. Research implications or Originality- Korean experience of rapid economic growth in the past can be a guideline of the economic growth of developing countries in the future. In this context, this study is considered to be meaningful, being applied to the structural change of trade in developing countries such China and Vietnam etc which have promoted the similar economic growth strategy and which are closely linked to Korean economy.

Mental health outcomes of quarantine and isolation for infection prevention: a systematic umbrella review of the global evidence

Md Mahbub Hossain,Abida Sultana,Neetu Purohit 한국역학회 2020 Epidemiology and Health Vol.42 No.-

OBJECTIVES: Transmission of infectious diseases is often prevented by quarantine and isolation of the populations at risk. These approaches restrict the mobility, social interactions, and daily activities of the affected individuals. In recent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, quarantine and isolation are being adopted in many contexts, which necessitates an evaluation of global evidence on how such measures impact the mental health outcomes among populations. This umbrella review aimed to synthesize the available evidence on mental health outcomes of quarantine and isolation for preventing infectious diseases. METHODS: We searched nine major databases and additional sources and included articles if they were systematically conducted reviews, published as peer-reviewed journal articles, and reported mental health outcomes of quarantine or isolation in any population. RESULTS: Among 1,364 citations, only eight reviews met our criteria. Most of the primary studies in those reviews were conducted in high-income nations and in hospital settings. These articles reported a high burden of mental health problems among patients, informal caregivers, and healthcare providers who experienced quarantine or isolation. Prevalent mental health problems among the affected individuals include depression, anxiety, mood disorders, psychological distress, posttraumatic stress disorder, insomnia, fear, stigmatization, low self-esteem, lack of self-control, and other adverse mental health outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: This umbrella review found severe mental health problems among individuals and populations who have undergone quarantine and isolation in different contexts. This evidence necessitates multipronged interventions including policy measures for strengthening mental health services globally and promoting psychosocial wellbeing among high-risk populations.

      • Foreign Direct Investment and Economic Growth in SAARC Countries

Naila Erum,Shahzad Hussain,Abida Yousaf 한국유통과학회 2016 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.3 No.4

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) plays a vital role in economic growth of the countries. The present study analyses the impact of the FDI on economic growth of South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation countries by using the pooled data for the period 1990-2014. Neo-classical production function has been used for analysis and getting stock-to-flow estimation, Taylor series approximation has applied. Fixed Effects Model has been used to investigate the impact of FDI, domestic capital, labour and government expenditures on economic growth. It is the evident from the results that both domestic investment and FDI have been a positive effect on economic growth. The study finds that the contribution of domestic private investment is more trustworthy than the contribution of FDI. Consequently, FDI loses its attraction as an engine of growth if the adverse balance of payment consequence of the resulting profit repatriating is also taken into account. The labour has positive and significant association with GDP. The effect of government expenditure is negligible on economic growth. The findings suggest that growth strategy cannot yield the long term benefits if it neglects investments on human capital.
