Light shows various optical behaviors such as reflection, absorption, and scattering on skin for individuals. In particular, reflection of light from the skin has been widely used as the brightness index of the skin of individuals through the measurement of the physical quantity of spectral reflectance. Therefore, the study of light behavior on skin would be useful for the preparation of new evaluation method in the development stage of make-up products. In this study, multi-dimensional analysis for spectral reflectance behavior of light on individual skin was performed using Kubelka-Munk model. Also, we analyzed the contribution of skin parameters such as skin thickness and hemoglobin, which could affect the spectral reflectance, using above model and literature information. Base on this, we calculated the theoretical reflectance of normal women for visual light, which showed good agreement with the measured reflectance. Our study of light propagation in skin based on Kubelka-Munk model provides useful insight for the development of personalized cosmetic in the near future.

In this study, we used HARVEST, a timber management strategy assessment tool, to evaluate alternative forest planning strategies on spatial pattern of cutting blocks. We applied the tool to the Gwangreung Experimental Forest (GEF) as a case study. The harvest schedules developed for GEF using a linear programming model was used to assess spatial patterns of cutting blocks under different management constraints. The results show that the allowable maximum harvest size largely affects the number, size, and distribution of cutting blocks. We also found that spatial dispersion methods and adjacency constraints could be used as an effective means to control spatial allocation of cutting blocks in order to meet certain forest ecosystem management goals.

Aging is known to produce changes in the cerebral vasculature and circulation. We aimed to quantitatively assess age-related changes in the morphology of small perforating vessels, lenticulostriate arteries (LSAs). LSA images were acquired using ultra-high field 7-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (7T MRI) from 24 young healthy volunteers (young group: YG) and 25 old healthy volunteers (old group: OG). Vessel-related factors such as curvature and tortuosity were analyzed using two-dimensional images. Our quantitative results demonstrated a fewer in their branches and a significantly more pronounced curvature in the OG compared to the YG. These findings were further confirmed qualitatively using image analysis. Our study findings show that MR angiography utilizing ultra-high field MRI can provide high-resolution images that can identify morphological characteristics of small perforating vessels. Based on these features, it is possible to document ageinduced changes in cerebral small vessels.

<P>The core/shell-structured upconversion nanophosphors (UCNPs) and Cd-free CuInS2/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized via coprecipitation and hot-injection methods, respectively, and they were applied to near infrared (NIR) photodetectors. The 관-NaYF4:Yb,Er/관-NaYF4 UCNPs emitted intense visible light peaking at 522, 542, and 656 nm via H11/22, S43/2, and F9/24???I15/24 transitions under excitation with 980 nm NIR light. The core/shell UCNPs showed 6.4 times higher emission intensity than core UCNPs. Charge carriers can be generated from CuInS2/ZnS QDs in the QD-UCNP mixture due to their broad absorption in the visible spectral region shorter than 600 nm. The photodetector devices were fabricated by spin-coating CuInS2/ZnS QDs on a SiO2/Si substrate with patterned gold electrodes followed by spin-coating UCNPs on the QD layer. The fabricated QD-UCNP-bilayer-based device showed a drastically increased photocurrent (128 관A) compared with the QD-layer-based device under 980 nm NIR light illumination. Additionally, the fabricated device showed stable ON-OFF switching properties against on and off NIR light.</P>

The neurotoxicity induced by L-glutamate in primary cultures of rat cortical cells could be attenuated by sesquiterpene constituent of Ginkgo biloba leaves, bilobalide. At the concentration of 100 nM, Bilobalide elevated the combined levels of reduced/oxidized glutathione in rat cortical cells exposed to 100mcM glutamate. Furthermore, bilobalide promoted a reduction in superoxide dismutase activity in glutamate-treated cells. Finally, bilobalide markedly inhibited the production of malondialdehyde. a measure of lipid peroxidation, in glutamate-treated rat cortical cells.

An agar-degrading enzyme-producing strain was isolated from seawater. The isolate was identified as Microbulbifer sp. SD-1 by 16S rRNA sequencing analysis. The optimal pH and temperature for growth were 6.0 and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively, and growth was possible at pH 9.0 and $60^{\circ}C$. The isolate required 5% NaCl for optimal growth and showed 45% growth activity without NaCl. Agar concentrations of 0-0.4% in the medium did not affect growth. Thin-layer chromatography analysis revealed that this strain could degrade agar into a monosaccharide and oligosaccharide, which may have industrial applications.

Lee, Seung Han,Jung, Hyun Kyu,Kim, Tae Cheol,Kim, Chang Hee,Shin, Chang Hwan,Yoon, Tae-Sik,Hong, A.-Ra,Jang, Ho Seong,Kim, Dong Hun Elsevier 2018 APPLIED SURFACE SCIENCE - Vol.434 No.-
<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Herein we report a metal nanoparticle synthesis method based on a physical vapor deposition process instead of the conventional wet process of chemical reactions in liquids. A narrow size distribution of synthesized gold nanoparticles was obtained using an ion coater on glycerin at low vapor pressure. The nanoparticle size could be modulated by controlling the sputtering conditions especially the discharge current. Due to the formation of gold nanoparticles, a surface plasmon resonance peak appeared at ∼530 nm in the absorption spectrum. The surface plasmon resonance peak exhibited red-shift with increasing size of the gold nanoparticles. Our results provide a simple, environmental friendly method for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles by combine low-cost deposition apparatus and a liquid medium, which is free from toxic reagents.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Gold nanoparticles were synthesized on glycerin using ion coater. </LI> <LI> The nanoparticle size could be modulated by controlling the sputtering conditions. </LI> <LI> Surface plasmon resonance peaks were observed in the gold colloidal solutions. </LI> </UL> </P>
