Ireland abounds in narrative stories, including mythologies, sagas, legends and folktales, handed down through many generations from the ancient pagan period. In Ireland, especially in the western country Sligo where W. B. Yeats spent the better part of his early days, one cannot go far without hearing the mystic stories of pagan gods, nymphs and ghosts. The Irish are very proud of their unique and traditional Celtic culture and they still believe that the supernatural beings haunt everywhere and intervene in their human affairs. Yeats was educated in England and greatly influenced by many English writers and poets. Yeats, however, born with Celtic spirit and encouraged by the patriot John O’Leary, determined to be a national poet. Therefore, he began to write his early romantic narratives and dramatic verses based on the ancient Irish myths and legends, following the two brilliant predecessors Samuel Ferguson and William Allingham. Besides, what is more important than anything else, he usually put his own life and his unrequited love for Maud Gonne by modifying their themes and symbols into the ancient stories. Thus he succeeded in creating utterly new myths much familiar not only to the Irish today but also to the modern people abroad. Hence he was a renowned myth-maker and -modifier of the age.

D. H Lawrence's Sons and Lovers is a traditional novel with stories and James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is a storyless modernist novel, and naturally the styles and techniques adopted in the two are quite different from each other. Yet, these two Ku¨nstlerromans have several common themes and among them the self-discovery motif is most remarkable. For it is quite essential for the hero desiring to be an artist to make a clear self-discovery or self-identification as a steady foundation for his future artistic job. Coincidentally the two heroes Paul Morel and Stephen Dedalus spent their early years under their mothers' overflowing affection and they were equally allegiance to their mothers. Besides, on arriving at puberty, the cub artists m t girls, from whom they draw their artistic inspiration and creative power. However, they are to go into trouble between the allegiance to their mothers and the faithfulness to their girls and they become dichotomized men between physical love and spiritual love for their women. And these troubles caused by the complicated relationship with women prevent each hero to grow a matured artist. This is why both the heroes have to escape from their women as well as from their mothers. And only through this escape is surely ensured their success as the seasoned artists.
W. B. 예이츠의 『하룬 알-라쉬드의 선물』: 환상과 현실의 교직

"The Gift of Harun Al-Rashid” is Yeats’s epistolary autobiographic poem based on the mystic episodes about the Calif Harun Al-Rashid and his favorite subject Kusta Ben Luka, the diagrammatist from The Arabian Nights. Naturally, its background and style are unique and, in a sense, it is a blended fabric of vision and reality. It has been considered to be something of a mystery, having nothing to do with the ancient Irish pagan myths into which Yeats used to bore. In this poem Yeats reflects in the most thinnest way of disguise his happy marriage life with his young wife Georgie Hyde-Lees, and her talk in sleep and automatic writing through arbitrary modification of the mysterious stories about Kusta and his young ignorant wife in the earlier years of their marriage life. The main theme of this poem is to descry Yeats’s persona Kusta’s journey from dark ignorance to light understanding through his young wife’s mouth and the various geometric symbols that she draws on the sand of the desert in the full moon. And this poem is important in that it clues us in deciphering the meaning of Yeats’s visionary philosophical system A Vision.
W. B. 예이츠의 발랴와 아일린 : 신화의 창조와 변용

Baile and Aillinn, based on a pagan myth of ancient Ireland, is a long narrative poem which expresses Yeats’s private love story along with his deep interest in his fatherland and its national literature. Naturally, Yeats enlarged the simple plot of the story which tells about the two lovers’ death and their going to live in Aengus’s land among the dead. He also partly created his own private myth in order to transmit his many-folded intent. By clothing each mythical character with a role and symbol appropriate for his purpose, he succeeded in making his poem overcome the limitation of private utterance and making it a poem with both individuality and universality. The death of Baile and Aillinn has a duplicate symbolic meaning. Firstly, their death is an inevitable ritual process to get an eternal beatitude through the union after death and a sort of sublimation of a tragic love, in which we can glimpse at the poet’s plaintive love for Gonne. Secondly, their death is a kind of ritual murder symbolizing a Messianism of the Irish desiring for liberation from inveterate poverty and oppression over time. In conclusion, Baile and Aillinn is an excellent piece showing Yeats’s seasoned poetic technique of creating a poem with new meaning through mythologizing with great subtlety not only his own autobiographical elements but also the national feelings of the Irish people.

Primary neoplasms of the pericardium are rarer than those originating within the myocardium or endocardium and, moreover, primary benign tumors of the pericardium are of much rare occurence. Mahaim[1945] was able to collect 84 cases of pericardial tumors, the majority of which were malignant. A case of primary benign fibromyxoma of the pericardium is presented. This tumor arouse in the right anterior aspect of the pericardium, through which the phrenic nerve was penetrated. The tumor was measured 10X6X6 cm in size and 120 gm in weight. Total excision of the mass was accomplished by antero-lateral thotacotomy incision, resulting complete cure. This is the first case of primary benign fibromyxoma of the pericardium on literatures in our knowledge.
