1950년대 중반에 시트벨트(Safety Belt, Seat Belt)가 차량에 장착되면서 자동차 충돌사고로부터 많은 생명을 구하고 상해를 경감시키는 역할을 담당해 오고 있다. 초기의 2점식 시트벨트를 착용한 운전자가 충돌시 머리와 가슴이 스티어링 휠에 부딪혀 사망하는 등 피해가 발생하는 것을 줄이기 위하여 정면충돌용 에어백이 1970년대 초반부터 장착되기 시작하였다. 초기에는 에어백의 장착률이 저조하다가 1980년대에 들어서면서 벤츠, BMW, 볼보 등이 장착하면서 에어백이 활성화 되었고, 미국에서는 1994년부터 시속 30마일의 고정벽 정면충돌에서 시트벨트를 장착하지 않은 경우에도 요구되는 상해치를 만족하도록 에어백의 의무장착을 법규로 제정하였다. 최근에는 미국에 수출하는 자동차는 물론이고 다른 지역에서 판매하는 모든 승용차 및 다목적차의 운전석에 기본으로 에어백을 장착하고 있으며, 조수석에도 에어백을 장착하는 추세에 있다. <br/> 측면충돌시 승객의 상해를 중리기 위한 측면충돌용 에어백은 1990년대 초반 가슴을 보호하는 가슴 에어백(Thorax Airbag)부터 시작하여 머리 가슴 에어백(Head and Thorax Airbag)으로 발전했고 측면 충돌 및 전복사고에서 머리를 보호하는 튜브형 에어백과 커튼형 에어백으로 다양하게 채택되고 있다.<br/> 본 원고에서는 충돌사고로부터 승객의 상해를 줄이기 위해 추가되는 법규 및 상품성과 이에 발맞춰 나날이 발전을 거듭하고 있는 에어백의 신기술 동향에 대해 기술한다.<br/>

Hybrid model of the full vehicle is developed for the prediction of the road noise. The tire and wheel model is experimentally constructed. The suspension is analytically modeled with finite element model. Components of the suspension are verified through the modal test. The dynamic characteristic of the shock absorber is separately estimated. A concrete block test rig is built in order to verify suspension modes under the elimination of the effect of the body. The trimmed body is also experimentally modeled in order to improve its accuracy up to mid frequency 100~400㎐. The road profile that is imposed to tire patches as input is calculated by inverse processing. The full vehicle simulation results show good agreements with those of the operating condition. TPA (Transfer Path Analysis) indicates the mainly contributing parts of the road noise. Through the operating test with modified samples, the validity of the present full vehicle model is confirmed.

Estimation of fatigue strength on the spot welded joint is very Important for strength design of spot welded steed sheet structures. In this paper, the effect of residual stress on the fatigue life of resistance spot weldment was studied. Residual stress fields of weldment were calculated by using thermo elastic plastic finite element analysis and equivalent fatigue stress considering residual stress effect was obtained. And then we predicted fatigue life, which included the effect of the residual stresses and the actual loading stresses. The calculation and experimental results were in good agreement. Therefore, the proposed calculated model can be considered to be sufficiently powerful for the prediction of fatigue life.

EuroNCAP (European New Car Assessment Program) announced recently a modified testing protocol for side impact assessment using the EUROSID-2 dummy instead of the EUROSID-I dummy. The EUROSID-2 dummy is identical in many parts with the EUROSID-I dummy but shows different behavior in experiments. Hence, the<br/> development of a model for the ES-2 dummy is of great interest for the automotive engineers working in the field of safety. EUROSID-2 finite element model has been developed in cooperation with the German Association for Automotive Research(FAT). This paper presents an overview of EUROSID-2 dummy and validation of the first version of FE dummy model for LS-DYNA.<br/>

A crash severity algorithm is developed to utilize frontal impact sensor for advanced airbag system in this paper. This study develops metric that can express crash severity and crash mode with measured acceleration signals and determines a weight factor for oblique and offset crash modes, and the weight factor is used to modify the acceleration sigmal obtained from the central ACU> The crash severity algorithm is differentiated by 3 steps through association of acceleration signals measured from center ACU and frontal impact sensor.

An sled model in which interior model is incorporated with BIW is used to evaluate occupant injury values for SUV vehicle in frontal impact. Sled simulation model is constructed and used for occupant simulation in 35mph NCAP, 25mph Unbelted condition. The simulation results are compared to SUV test results. The effects of design changes of some interior parts on injury values are evaluated with the correlated model.
