We have developed the upper limb orthosis with a pneumatic rubber actuator, which is intended for the assistance and the enhancement of upper limb muscular activities. In this paper, we investigated the effectiveness of the upper limb orthosis we developed. To find out the effectiveness of the orthosis, we analyzed muscular activity in the upper limbs of the Alternate Dumbbell Curl motion. Subjects in experiment were young and healthy person of 20`s. The subjects were instructed to the perform Alternate Dumbbell Curl motion in sitting position for motion analysis and we measured muscular activities of the subjects. The subjects were performed the Alternate Dumbbell Curl motion without and with the upper limb orthosis. We made a comparison the muscular activities of the upper limbs between without and with the upper limb orthosis. We compared the muscular activities according to the various load. For the analysis of muscular activities, we measured of the subjects during Alternate Dumbbell Curl motion. The experimental results showed that the muscular activities in with the upper limb orthosis were significantly reduced. As a result of this experiment, we confirmed the effectiveness of the developed upper limb orthosis.

An elbow orthosis with a pneumatic rubber actuator has been developed to assist and enhance upper limbs movements and has been examined for the effectiveness. The effectiveness of the elbow orthosis was examined by comparing muscular activities during alternate dumbbell curl motion wearing and not wearing the orthosis. The subjects participated in the experiment were younger adults in their twenties. The subjects were instructed to perform dumbbell curl motion in a sitting position wearing and not wearing orthosis in turn and a dynamometer was used to measure elbow joint torque outputs in an isokinetic mode. Orthosis was controlled using contractile muscle force that is measured from force sensor through cDAQ-9172 board. The air pressure of the pneumatic actuator was O.3MPa the most suitable air pressure. For the analysis of muscular activities, Electromyography of the subjects was measured during alternate dumbbell curl motion. The experiment results showed that the muscular activities wearing the elbow orthosis were reduced. With this, we confirmed the effectiveness of the developed elbow orthosis.

Ankle-foot orthosis(AFO) with a pneumatic rubber actuator, which is intended for the assistance and the enhancement of ankle muscular activities was developed. In this study, appropriate amount of power pattern of the device and the effectiveness of the system was investigated. The subjects were performed the gait motion with and without the AFO. We made a comparison the muscular activities between with and without the AFO. A Biodex dynamometer was used to measure the maximal concentric strength of the plantar flexors of with and without the orthosis on right side. The experiment results in gait motion showed that the muscular activities wearing the AFO were reduced and the peak torque values wearing it were increased. Therefore, we confirmed the effectiveness of the developed AFO.

The rate of increase in the elderly increased study on the lower limbs of the aged. The lower limbs of the aged played an important part in their daily life like as standing, going up the stairs, walking and so on. Therefore lower limbs orthosis is needed to increase lower limbs of the aged. The purpose of this study was to analyze gait motion of the aged with the lower limbs orthosis. Four subjects in this experimentation were tested for gait analysis. For this study, we made a comparison between lower limbs motion pattern of the aged during gait with lower limbs orthosis and without it. The analysis of gait motion was achieved using APAS 3D Motion Analysis System. The lower limbs motion pattern was analyzed by four targets in subject`s body. Position of targets was four parts of lower limbs (hip, knee, ankle, foot). The displacement, velocity, and acceleration of four targets was calculated average of three times experiment of one old person for analysis of motion pattern. The result of this study, displacement and velocity of four targets in the aged with lower limbs orthosis measured small value, but acceleration measured large value because of rubber actuator`s elastic power. Especially, the increase of acceleration in foot target was measured much. In this point, we could know possibility about promotion of lower limbs power.
