This work presents a method based on electromagnetic induction for the simultaneous non-contact measurement of two-axis lateral vibrations of a nonmetallic cylinder. The suggested method employs two pairs of hollow metallic loops, four pairs of permanent magnets and two solenoids. When the cylinder vibrates, eddy currents are generated in the metallic loops due to electromagnetic induction. The current in one pair of loop is induced by the lateral vibration in one direction, while the other by the lateral vibration in the perpendicular direction. The induced currents can be sensed through the remotely installed solenoids. While the proposed technique can be useful for the vibration measurement in hot or insulated cylinders, for which a contact type sensor is hardly applicable, the present study is focused on its underlying measurement mechanism and fundamental experiments. To this end, two-axis vibrations and frequency response functions of a thin nonmetallic cylinder were measured simultaneously by the proposed sensor. They were compared with those extracted by using commercial accelerometers to check the working performance of the proposed measurement technique. The effects of some parameters in the proposed technique, such as the length of the loop, were also investigated.

This work proposes a noncontact ultrasonic transducer for detecting wall-thinning of containment liner plates of nuclear power plants by measuring their thickness without physical contact. Because the containment liner plate is designed to prevent atmospheric leakage of radioactive substances under severe nuclear accident, its wall-thinning inspection is important for safety of nuclear power plants. Wall-thinning investigation of containment liner plates have been carried out by measuring their thickness with contact-type ultrasonic thickness gauge by inspectors and needs a lot of time and cost. As an alternative, an electromagnetic acoustic transducer measuring precisely thickness of containment liner plates without any physical contact or couplant was suggested in this research. A transducer generating and measuring shear ultrasonic waves in thickness direction was designed and wave field produced by the transducer was analyzed to verify the design. The working performance of the suggested transducer was tested with carbon steel plate specimens with various thicknesses. The test result shows that the proposed transducer can measure thickness of the specimens precisely without any couplant and implies that swift scanning of wall-thinning of containment liner plates will be possible with the proposed transducer.

철도 레일의 주기적인 탐상은 레일 결함으로 인해 발생할 수 있는 철도 중대사고를 미연에 방지할 수 있는, 철도 안전 유지의 중요한 요소 중 하나이다. 본 논문은 현재 철도 레일 탐상에 적용되고 있거나, 적용을 위해 연구 중인 비파괴탐상 기법들에 관해 기술하였다. 레일에 발생하는 결함 유형에 대해 우선 언급하였고, 레일 탐상에 가장 많이 적용되고 있는 압전형 탐촉자 기반의 초음파탐상 기술에 대해 정리하였다. 접촉식 초음파 레일 탐상 기술에 대한 대안으로서 연구 중이거나 시험 중인 비파괴탐상 기법들에 대해 기술하고, 각 기법 별로 레일의 표면 및 내부 결함 검출 가능 여부에 대해 살펴보았으며 여러 탐상 기법들에 대한 비교를 통해 향후 레일 탐상 기술 개발에 활용하고자 하였다. For railway safety, it is very important to detect damages of rails at their early stage because any undetected damage in a rail can break the rail and cause a serious railway accident. In this paper, several NDT applicable to rail inspections are described. Major damage types in rails are discussed first and the rail inspection technology using conventional piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers, which is widely adopted for damage detection of rails, is explained. Other NDT being researched or tested for rail inspection are also discussed as complementary technologies to the concurrent contact type ultrasonic inspection. Characteristics of each rail inspection technologies are evaluated in order to provide requirements for future development of a new rail inspection method.
원주 방향 두께가 불균일한 배관의 진동 모드 특성을 이용한 배관 감육 검사 기법 연구

현재의 초음파 두께 측정에 기반한 배관 감육 검사 속도를 개선하기 위해 배관 쉘 진동 모드의 고유 진동수 변화를 이용한 감육 검사 기법을 제안하였다. 감육이 발생한 부위의 축방향 수직 단면의 두께는 원주 방향을 따라 불균일하게 변화하는데, 두께가 균일한 경우에 비해 쉘 모드의 고유 진동수가 감소하거나 두 개 이상으로 분기됨을 확인하였다. 배관의 고유 진동수는 한 번의 측정으로도 평가할 수 있으므로, 제안한 방법을 이용하면 축방향 수직 단면의 평균 두께 변화를 빠르게 확인할 수 있어 초음파 두께 측정 방식에 비해 신속한 감육 검사가 가능하다. 본 논문에서는 제안 기법의 원리를 설명하고, 2차원과 3차원 감육 배관 모델 및 시편을 이용한 전산해석과 실험을 통해 제안한 기법의 적용성을 검증하였다. This work proposes an alternative pipe wall-thinning inspection method based on change of eigenfrequencies of shell vibration modes in wall-thinned pipes. It takes much time to detect wall-thinning of pipes using ultrasonic thickness gauge and only a limited number of pipes are under regular inspection. In a pipe with locally decreased thickness, stiffness varies along circumferential direction and natural frequencies of shell vibration modes of the pipe change or frequencies of same modes bifurcate into two different values. Therefore, one can monitor pipe wall-thinning by measuring change of natural frequencies or estimate wall-thinning shape qualitatively. The feasibility of the proposed method was studied by FE vibration analysis for wall-thinned pipes. Modal testing was also carried out for the pipes with artificial wall-thinned section to verify the working performance of the suggested technique.
비접촉 초음파 방식의 철도레일 내부결함 검출에 관한 연구

Non-contact detection of internal defects in a rail using ultrasonic waves is discussed in this paper. Cracks in a rail may be a cause of a serious railway accident such as derailment if left undetected. Concurrent rail inspection method based on ultrasonic testing using piezoelectric transducers has several limitations as it should keep physical contact with the rail. This work suggests a non-contact detection of internal defects in a rail using ElectroMagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMAT) which can produce and measure ultrasonic waves in a rail without any couplant. The EMATs for rail inspection are designed and fabricated and their working performance is verified through a series of experiments on various types of internal defects in test rails. The effect of lift-off between the transducers and the rail on the generated signals is also discussed.
