Palisaded encapsulated neuroma (PEN) is a benign cutaneous neural tumor. It usually presents in adults as a solitary asymptomatic skin-colored papule that is almost always on the face. We report here on an uncommon case of plexiform PEN that developed on the penis of a 43-year-old man. It was 6 mm-sized skin colored papule. Histologically, there is an encapsulated nodule with a plexiform growth pattern in the dermis and a palisading arrangement of nuclei. On immunohistochemical staining, the tumor cells of the nodule were positive for S-100 and neurofilament. (Korean J Dermatol 2010;48(10):902~904)

Background: Genital skin cancer is a potential side effect of phototherapy. Development of genital skin cancer lowers a patient`s quality of life. However, there are no standards for genital protection during phototherapy. Objective: This study was designed to find adequate materials for genital protection. Methods: Eight common materials for genital protection were placed over an ultraviolet (UV) meter that was irradiated with UVA and narrowband UVB phototherapy units. The percentage of blocked UV was measured. Results: White and black cotton underwear, white and black polyester underwear, and surgical drapes did not allow the transmission of UVA and narrowband UVB light. But a surgical mask allowed about 15% transmission of UV light. Conclusion: These results suggest that white and black cotton underwear, white and black polyester underwear and surgical drapes provide sufficient UV protection. Pleomorphic basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a pathologic variant of BCC characterized by the presence of atypical appearing, mononuclear or multinucleated giant cells. The tumor usually presents as a nodule on the head or neck. We report a case of pleomorphic BCC with alopecia areata on the scalp in a 63-year-old woman. She had had a well circumscribed, black nodule on an alopecic patch for several months. (Korean J Dermatol 2010;48(2):131∼134)

The mirage technique is proved to be powerful in measuring the thermal diffusivity of materials. In particular, its contactless nature makes it suitable for delicate samples and microscale structures. In this study, thermal-wave-coupling method is developed in a general form for both thermally thin and thick samples. In the suggested measuring scheme, the probe beam can be positioned close to the pump beam and the absolute position need not be measured. Therefore the new scheme provides a relatively simple yet effective way to determine the thermal diffusivity of thermally thick samples. Thermal diffusivities of bulk samples like Ni and Al were measured and the characteristics of mirage signal for a thin film were observed by using the mirage experimental setup. The apparent thermal diffusivity was measured by varying such parameters as probe beam height, size of pump beam, power of pump beam, and surface condition of sample. From the practical standpoint, it is shown that the size of the pump beam is the most important factor for accurate thermaldiffusivity measurement. Experiments using thin-film samples show that the thermal diffusivity of a substrate covered with thin film can be measured by photothermal mirage signals.
좁은잎천선과 및 조릿대 혼합 추출물의 항산화 성분과 항산화 활성

본 연구에서는 HR02/04(8:2)-W에 대한 항산화 성분 및 생리활성을 평가하기 위하여, p-coumaric acid 함량, 총 플라보노이드 및 총 페놀 함량, DPPH, ABTS 라디칼 소거능, FRAP 활성, reducing power, ORAC value를 측정하였다. 또한, 피부 섬유아세포에서 hydrogen peroxide에 의하여 산화적 스트레스가 유도된 세포모델에서의 HR02/04(8:2)-W의 산화 손상 보호효과를 측정하기 위하여 XTT assay 및 H₂-DCFDA assay를 진행하였다. HPLC를 이용한 p-coumaric acid 함량 분석 결과, HR02/04(8:2)-W 내의 pcoumaric acid는 75.62±1.56 mg/100 g 함유되어 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 총 플라보노이드 함량 및 총 페놀 함량은 각각 21.57±0.84 mg RE/g, 21.25±1.31 mg GAE/g으로 측정되었다. DPPH 및 ABTS 라디칼 소거활성 시험에서 HR02/04(8:2)-W의 농도 유의적으로 소거활성이 증가하는 것을 확인하였으며, FRAP 활성 및 reducing power 측정에서도 우수한 항산화 활성을 보였다. ORAC assay 결과 control 보다 5배 이상 높은 수치를 보이며 효과적으로 라디칼 저해 활성을 보였다. 항산화 실험에서의 뛰어난 항산화 활성은 HR02/04(8:2)-W에 함유된 페놀류들에 의한 것으로 판단된다. 피부 섬유아세포를 이용한 실험에서, HR02/04(8:2)-W을 300 μg/mL의 농도까지 세포의 생존력에 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났으며, hydrogen peroxide 처리에 의하여 56%까지 감소되었던 세포 생존율을 최대 78%까지 증가시키며 효과적으로 세포를 보호했음을 확인하였다. H₂-DCFDA 염색을 통하여 세포내의 ROS의 양을 측정하였을 때, hydrogen peroxide처리에 의하여 control군 대비 137%까지 증가하였던 ROS를 최대 89% 까지 감소시킴으로써 세포 내 활성산소를 효과적으로 억제하였다. 이상의 결과를 종합하여 볼 때, HR02/04(8:2)-W이 뛰어난 항산화 생리활성 기능을 가지고, 세포 내 활성산소를 효과적으로 제거할 수 있는 소재임이 확인되었으며, 천연물 유래 기능성 식품원료로서의 활용 가능성이 매우 넓을 것으로 판단된다. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant components and activities of HR02/04(8:2)-W, a mixture of S. quelpaertensis Nakai and F. erecta var. sieboldii. We investigated the p-coumaric acid, total flavonoid, and total phenol contents. To evaluate the antioxidant efficacy, we measured the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) radical scavenging activity, FRAP activity, reducing power, and ORAC value. We observed the protective effect of hydrogen peroxide against cell damage in human dermal fibroblasts. As a result of the experiment, the p-coumaric acid, total flavonoid, and total phenol contents were 75.62±1.56 mg/100 g, 21.57±0.84 mg rutin equivalent (RE)/g, and 21.25±1.31 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g, respectively. In the experiments on antioxidant activity, HR02/04(8:2)-W was found to have significantly increased antioxidant activity. In the human dermal fibroblasts, the HR02/04(8:2)-W treated groups could effectively protect cells against oxidative damage. In this study, we confirmed that HR02/04(8:2)-W is a material with effective physiological antioxidant activity.
