Why are Russians so obsessed with Akunin's mystery novels? The purpose of this thesis is to analyze <Azazel>, the first and representative work of Akunin's Pandorin mystery series, from the perspective of the main character's figure, plot, and genre. I compared Sherlock Holmes with Pandorin from the point of view of ‘the type of detective’, and I reviewed various anti-detective personalities that are different from the classic mystery novels. Azazel, for example, does not deal with murder cases committed by a single individual, which is very unusual in traditional mystery novels. Azazel, the novel's title, is the name of the culprit of this novel. What is the identity of Azazel? It is close to a group or organization. If we keep in mind the fact that Akunin is a writer who has a voice critical of the current undemocratic and authoritarian Russian system, Azazel can be seen as a symbol of totalitarian socialism that the writer is trying to criticize. However, the important thing is not whether Azazel is a Jewish religious organization or a political group trying to realize a particular ideology. It means that any of those belong to a group or an organization, not just a private individual at least. Therefore, the greed of the individual, which is conventional in many classic mystery novels, was not the motive for the murder in Azazel , but the great enlightenment ideology of the salvation of mankind. Also, in this paper, it is reviewed that the Russian mystery novel Azazel is rather closer to the tradition of the French mystery novel than the Anglo-Saxon novel. As discussed the above, the genre characteristics of Azazel should be analyzed closer to a crime novel rather than a detective novel. Lastly, the postmodern nature of this novel is briefly discussed.
고골의 단편소설 「코」의 러한 번역 양상 연구: L.S. Barkhudarov의 번역 변환(translation transformation) 이론을 중심으로

This paper discussed the 'Translation Transformation' Theory of Barkhudarov L.S., a representative scholar in the field of Russian translation theory. Based on the theory, the Russian-Korean translation aspects of Nikolai Gogol's short story, The Nose, were analyzed as follows. First, as Barkhudarov argued, the Translation Transformation Theory was a useful methodology for analyzing translation aspects between source and target languages. Second, in literary texts, translators produced optimal translations, attempting creative interventions by adapting the overall context of the text, and concretization, compensation, and addition were also used. Third, sentences containing cultural-bound lexis showed diverse translation aspects, and in such circumstances, mistranslation cases were frequently observed. Fourth, mistranslation cases were often found in translating figurative and idiomatic expressions. Because these expressions were often unfamiliar in the target language when translated directly. the best translation strategy was to achieve equivalence in meaning through the translator's active interventions.

For high performance rotating machinery, unstable vibrations may occur caused by hydrodynamic forces such as oil film forces, clearance excitation forces generated by the working fluid, and etc. In order to improve the availability one has to take into account the vibrations very accurately. When designing a rotating machinery, the stability behavior and the resonance response can be obtained by calculation of the complex eigenvalues. A suitable modifications of seal and/or bearing design may effectively improve the stability and the response of a rotor system. This paper deals with the optimum length and clearance of seals and bearings to minimize the resonance response(Q factor) and to maximize the logarithmic decrement in the operating speed under the constraints of design variables. Also, for an avoidance of resonance region from the operating speed, an optimization technique has been used to yield the critical speeds as far from the operating speed as possible. The optimization method is used by the genetic algorithm, which is a search algorithm based on the mechanics of natural selection and natural genetics. The results show that the optimum design of seals and bearings can significantly improve the resonance and the stability of the pump rotor system.
