The purpose of this study was to investigate the end-use properties of coolness fabrics for inner wear in Korea and Japan. 3 kinds of Korean products, 4 kinds of Japanese products and a non-functional product were used to evaluate the mechanical, heat and moisture properties. Stiffness, surface property, air permeability, warm-cool feeling (qmax) were measured by cantilever, KES-SE friction tester, KES-F8 air permeability tester and KES-F7 Thermo Labo ⅡB, respectively. Water vapour permeability, moisture absorbency, water absorbency and drying property were also measured by methods of evaporation, oven, Byreck and natural drying, respectively. The stiffness was high in the 100% thick cotton fabric and in the high density fabrics containing a lot of polyester fiber. The coefficient of friction (MIU) values tended to be higher on the wrong side of the fabric than the right. The air permeability was higher in the low density fabrics. The qmax value was affected by the surface condition, moisture and heat transfer properties of the fabrics. The moisture absorbency was higher in the fabrics containing more rayon while the fabric containing only hydrophobic fibers showed the lowest moisture absorption. The water absorption rate tended to be faster in wale direction than in course direction for all fabrics, and was greatly affected by the finishing of the fabrics. The drying time was longer as fabrics containing more hydrophilic fiber, and the drying rate was higher in thinner fabrics that absorbed less water per unit volume. Korean products had good air permeability and cool touch, while Japanese products had a good frictional property. The results obtained could be used for selection of proper inner wear to conserve energy and improve comfort at high temperature environments.
