In this paper, rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element method with various damage models including McClintock damage model, Cockroft-Latham damage model, Freudenthal damage model, Rice-Tracey damage model and Modified Lemaitre damage model is tried to predict the Mannesmann effect. The damage models are criticized in terms of Mannesmann effect. It is shown that most traditional damage models are far away from predicting the Mannesmann effect occurring in rolling of round bar with barrel-type rolls and without mandrel or mandrel, emphasizing the necessity of new proper damage model to predict the Mannesmann effect.

In this paper, a finite element analysis model is proposed to simulate a chipless forming process based on flow forming. In the analysis model two artificial planes of symmetry are employed to define the analysis domain for saving computational time. The prediction of the proposed analysis model are compared with experiments in terms of deformed shape. Thd comparison shows that the predicted geometries in the planes of symmetry are a little different from the experimental geometries but that those in the mid-plane are quite to the contrary.

In this paper, the predictions of ring compression obtained by various commercialized softwares including ABAQUS, AFDEX, DEFORM, FORGE and SIMUFACT are compared. Except AFDEX, the predictions obtained by Hatzenbichler et al. were employed. Variations of the deformed shapes with coefficient of Coulomb friction and the minimum inner radius with stroke are compared in detail, revealing that the predictions are more or less different from each other. As emphasized by Hatzenbichler et al., this study is aimed not at evaluating the accuracy of the commercialized softwares but at emphasizing the difference of predictions itself. The accuracy of Coulomb friction for AFDEX 2D is tried to be checked by investigating stress components at the die-material interface.

In this paper, comparative study on a Mannesmann roll piercing process with respect to supporting equipment including Diecher"s guiding disc and Stiefel"s guiding plate or shoe is carried out. A Mannesmann roll piercing process is found from the literature and the same process conditions and geometries except the supporting equipment are used for the two cases. Predictions of the processes with different supproting equipments show distinct difference in plastic deformation. It has been shown that the Diecher"s type is the better of the two in terms of ellipticity but that the Stiefel"s type is to the contrary for spatial efficiency.

In this paper, a heat sink forging process is simulated by the finite element method. The heat sink design found in the literature is selected and its related process design is assumed based on a backward extrusion process to evaluate the general-purpose metal forming simulator AFDEX for applying to such the complicated process and to find the optimized remeshing conditions.
