Vol.28 No.-

Judith Wright is one of the few outstanding Australian poets. Her poetical words are so intense with metaphors and symbols that readers feel tension in searching for the exact meaning. She even said in one of her poems, "I`d give these heavy words away". It is the purpose of this study to examine the images of women in her poems firstly as a lover in her love poems and secondly as a married woman in other poems. In the love poems, the women speakers are passionate and at the same time intellectual, and they can quickly approach the essence of core matters. In the latter poems, the women are intelligent enough to care for their families as well as be involved in outside matters. They realize how destructive their own generation was and worry about worldly affairs unlike the traditional housewives. In one of her poems, we can meet a woman who sacrificed her artistic talents to be an ordinary housewife to meet societal conventions. Wright reveals the problems of prejudice and oppression on women through the women images and the voices they portray. In contemporary society, it is inevitable not to consider any women writers in the view of feminism. However, Wright hesitated to join the feminist movement even in the 1970s. She assumed a high value on the mother, and she is much more interested in defining the essential and universal principles of feminity than in defining the historical situation of a particular women. Wright occupied the important position as a predecessor in the establishment of the traditional woman literature.

Vol.37 No.-

It is the purpose of this paper to examine the nature of love in the love poems of Judith Wright and Emily Dickinson. Even in psychology, love has not been defined clearly in intelligent terms, for people have thought that it is not to be pondered but simply to be experienced as a strong emotional attachment to another. In this paper, the ideas on love are examined in Heraclitus and Plato to understand how they considered love in ancient times. Among the recent studies of the psychology of love, Robert Sternberg`s triangular theory of love is remarkable and popular in the analysis and categorization of love. According to him, love consists of 3 factors, passion, intimacy and commitment, which are located at the vertexes of the triangle of love. He categorized love into 8 types depending on the combination of these 3 factors. When the triangular theory is applied to Wright`s love poems, the love in them seems to be a completed one in which the 3 factors harmonized well together. However, when Dickinson`s poems are analyzed with the theory, the love in her poems focuses on passion while the other 2 factors are lacking or absented. In Wright`s love poems, personae want to appreciate love as a resource of life-force and to be free from the fear of time and death through happy union, or for them love can be a means to lead a better life morally or emotionally. In Dickinson`s, personae are eager to share passionate love with lovers who are not always able to be around them. For them, love itself is a goal to acquire. The result can be reasoned that Wright was a married woman and she could appreciate harmonized love, while Dickinson was unmarried, and furthermore, reclusive in her later life, and she had no opportunity to realize what complete love is in Sternberg`s sense.

Vol.33 No.-

Judith Wright was much interested in the conservation of nature in Australia from as early as the 1950s. She regarded nature to be protected as it is. Ecofeminism developed in the 1970s with the conjunction of the second wave feminism and the rise of the modern environmental movement. Especially cultural ecofeminism emphasizes the identification between women and nature in terms of biology and women``s experience as carers and mothers. In this sense, ecofeminism can offer a good way to approach Judith Wright``s poems. In Judith Wright``s poems, nature is closely connected with the life of the human being as a resource of creation, care and recovery from sickness. Women take the role of creation and carer of children as mothers using "the world``s four elements: earth, water, air, and the fire of the sun" like "the tree holds four truths in one." In this sense, Wright tried to identify nature with women as a resource of life-force. For her, nature also showed a good example from which humankind should learn how to live and how to love. Wright tried to tell us the fact that when human beings can associate with nature, and live in nature, they can recover from unhealthy mental conditions like the old mad girl in her poem, "The Hawthorn Hedge". Also, nature helped an old man find freedom and identify himself with a natural piece, a stone, in her poem, "Two Old Men". When protection of nature and earth is one of the most important global issues, and the feminist movement develops womens`` rights continuously, reading Wright``s poems can offer the reasons why we should protect nature and women together through reevaluation of them as resources of creation of life. Judith Wright was one of the predecessors of conservation and feminism even though she declared that she had not been a feminist.

(JITR) Vol.18 No.2

This paper presents a dimming ballast for electrodeless fluorescent lamp. There are two dimming methods for electrodeless lamp, which are frequency change and DC link voltage control. Frequency change for lamp power control is inappropriate because the lamp coefficients are a function of lamp power which is related equivalent lamp impedance and coupling coefficient of the transformer and etc. In this paper, the dimming is achieved by controlling the DC_Link voltage in relation to the lamp power. The DC_Link voltage is controlled by a buck converter. Experimental results of the proposed design method are presented in order to validate the proposed method.

Keats's Endymion is the longest narrative poem about a quest for romance composed of more than 4,000 lines. It is traditional to read the work as an allegory of the poet's desire for union with the spirit of ideal beauty. The critics who have stood for the allegorical view resolved the poem into stages of human development, beginning with the sensual love, leading to humane service and sympathy for fellow men, and ending with union with the ideal beauty which Cynthia symbolizes. Recently, however some critics attacked the allegorical interpretation of the poem because of the discursiveness and incoherence of the narratives. For them Endymion is an erotic love poem which reveals Keats's unconsciousness including his adolescent desires. But that Endymion is allegorical is apparent and the main problem is how to interpret the allegory. In any interpretation of the allegory, Cynthia plays the important role as a symbol of ideal beauty. She is described attractive as an erotic love-object, and Endymion's lengthy quest was for the erotic love with Cynthia. The women in Endymion are beautiful with easiness of temper, compassion, kindness and submissiveness which were thought as virtues of ideal woman in the Romantic period. The concept of an ideal woman then who engaged in such behaviour would today called female masochism. Without any historical survey of the concept of ideal woman in the age Keats lived, Endymion cannot function properly as an allegorical poem. < Chongbuk National University >

Vol.24 No.3

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship of poetic imagination and beauty in Keats's poetry. As one of the romantic poets who turned his back to an often unsympathetic audience and sing to himself, it was natural for Keats to concentrate on the world of imagination as a means of introspection and of escape from the unhappy reality. The alienated poet, Keats seemed to be forced to justify and defend himself by speaking of sanctity of the poetic imagination, for himself as an artist and his audience. The concept of beauty caught by imagination, which Keats named "Essential Beauty", is characterized by being subjective but with universal validity. The power of imagination to Keats, seems to be intensely creative and dynamic. The imagination is not the mirror of empyrean realm but rather create beauty that is truth, "whether it existed before or not." As Adam's dream brought Eve, whom he found real on his awakening, the active imagination adumbrates that beauty will come true in reality. Keats's equation, "Beauty is truth, truth beauty, can be extablished through this dynamic activity of imagination. It can be reasonded that Keats had suffered enough to know how to feel idea through unified sensibility.

Vol.26 No.2

The purpose of this paper is to examine John Donne's poems through feminism. A few suspicions might be raised when a feminst reading of Donne’s poems is suggested, since he has not known as a feminst poet at all. John Donne wrote his poems in the period when feminism had not been imagined by most people in the traditional patriarchal and phallocentric ideology. In this period, the physical beauty was the best virtue of a woman. But being different from the convention, the description of a woman’s physical beauty is hardly found in Donne's love poems. For him beauty of natural world is of little estimation as it is simply a thing that happened by chance. Rather the psychological emotion or inner experience were described exactly in the place of a woman’s body. Donne seems to recognize the fact that a woman is more than a sexual partner in the relation with a man. In some of his poems a woman’s influence upon a man is so great as if to infer that a man’s existence is dependent on his lover just as solar energy on the moon. As a matter of fact, Donne compared the sun to a woman, the moon to a man. But in other poems he revealed the patriarchal inclination toward the women who turned their back from the lovers. This kind of contradictory attitude towards a woman appears in Donne’s poems. A feminist reading of Donne can achieve two things at least. Firstly, we can trace the historical procedure in which women were oppressed by patriarchal ideology. Secondly, a feminist reading may provide and contribute toward an extension of interpreting the text from another perspective. <Chonbuk National University>

Vol.20 No.1

John Keats, as if he expected his short life as a poet, devoted his life only to poetry for the 4-5 years before his death. Poetry was his life at that time. This is the reason why we consider his letters to friends and brothers important, in which he expressed his own opinions on poetry. This study concentrates on his sayings about imagination. Keats refuses to see imagination as the activity of a dominant passion but rather as its passivity or as a synthesis of suddenness and originality. One of his letters said that "The simple imaginative Mind may have its rewards in the repetition of its own silent working coming continually on the spirit with a fine suddenness." "It's own silent working" produces poetry. In this context, silence is significant for the working imagination. In his poems, silence can sometimes be a sweet music and other time it is compared to a pearl shell containing jewels. Silence is closely related to the image of a bower and a cave which is an imaginative, peaceful, and quiet space far from reality. But silence especially in "Ode on a Grecian Urn" sometimes tells or questions talkatively. Silence in Keats poems is not silent at all. His poems are "where silence dreariest / Is most articulate."
