Vol.30 No.2

Objectives :This paper studies the pulse diagnosis as found in Youksimanpil, which is a series of medical charts containing 150 diagnosis records of Yi Suki, a doctor who was active in Joseon during the 17-18th centuries. Through this effort, the paper aims to shed light on how pulse was utilized in the Korean medicine, and in process tries to reveal the essence of Korean medicine s treatment method. Methods : 60 charts where pulse method was used are selected in Youksimanpil and a table is created with them. Figures are drawn to explain four steps of pulse-sensing from the simple method to highly advanced method. Charts are presented with the corresponding original texts and their translations. With these efforts, the paper attempts to reveal the broad understanding of the doctor of Joseon period who consistently kept to the most basic principle of pulse diagnosis. Results : The efficiency of pulse diagnosis depends on the unity and simplicity in diagnosis and prescription. There were continued efforts between the doctors in Joseon to collect and compare the experiences they gained from clinical practices in order to organize their findings and form a system. These are: (1) individual pulse, (2) patternized pulse, (3) balance between left and right pulses, (4) balance between pulse and body, and (5) the doctor s extemporaneous diagnosis. In that efforts, they protect the principle of holistic diagnosis, which is one of Korean medicine s core principles. Conclusions : Thanks to the existence of medical charts that presents in detail how the texts of Donguibogam were applied in real clinical practices, today we can see Korean medicine’s highly advanced synergy between textual knowledge and clinical experiences as recorded in the form of charts

전종욱 ( Jong Wook Jeon ),임보경 ( Bo Kyung Yim ),이정화 ( Jeong Hwa Lee ),최선미 ( Sun Mi Choi ) 한방재활의학과학회 2012 한방재활의학과학회지 Vol.22 No.1

Objectives :The aim of this study is to investigate into the origin, transmission and transformation of traditional therapy called JieGu(接骨) in Korea and to present the status of JieGuShi(接骨士) in Korea in contrast to Japan and China. Methods :We searched medical or non-medical classics of Joseon dynasty with the key word “JieGu(接骨)” and found various therapies for bone fracture and dislocation. And we analysed JieGuShi exam books in Japanese imperialistic period, and made interview with Korean JieGuShi remained. Results :We found considerable linkage of clinical technique for bone fracture and dislocation which is using drugs, surgery and hand techniques in spite of centennial time gap. But the JieGuShi system is about to disappear because of institutional change in medicine and the techniques they had also distributed quite a lot without formal successors. In contrast, Japan`s JieGuShi who succeeded to merge the traditional technique and modern medicine in musculoskeletal field are now much flurishing. Conclusions :The linkage of traditional JieGu technique and succeeding modern clinics in Korea is evident. The imminent task is registering the original practices of JieGuShi which is to be selected and arranged to revitalize the skills of hand therapies in the musculoskeletal field.

Vol.32 No.3

Objectives : This paper looks at the history of East Asian acupuncture and moxibustion in the context of the general orientations of craft and art. It is understood that acupuncture and moxibustion was the ultimate integration of reason and craft in which text and experience mutually influenced each other throughout its development. In Joseon, the pursuit of integration between the body and the order of the Heaven and Earth was particularly prominent. Methods : As in the words of Zhunagzi(莊子), the state in which something that deeply touches the mind manifests in the hands has been understood as the ultimate state in modern and ancient art. Starting here, I examined the possibility that Korean acupuncture and art has evolved from such foundations step by step. Major acupuncture and moxibustion texts were examined historically, starting with 『Shenyingjing(神應經)』, leading to 『Junggan-Shenyingjing(重刊神應經)』, 『Chimgu-Gyeongheombang(鍼灸經驗方)』, 『Chijongjinam(治腫指南)』, 『ChijongjinamJoseonchambon治腫指南朝鮮槧本』, 『Chimgutaegilpyeonjip(鍼灸擇日編集)』, 『ChimguMyeonggam(鍼灸明鑑)』. Introductions and main contents of the texts were analyzed and presented appropriately. Results : East Asian acupuncture and moxibustion has developed based on the study of pathways that correspond to Shen, of the accordance and harmony between body and the order of Heaven and Earth together with theoretical refinement, technical development, and acceptance of new discoveries. In the perspective of craft, this was motivated by artistic passions such as 得於心·應於手 and 醫者意也 . In the case of refined acupuncture methods, due to their difficulty in education and transmission there has been some fluctuation. Conclusions : Korea, China, and Japan share a largely similar philosophical and cultural basis. Reason and craft, text and experience mutually influenced each other while the core of refined acupuncture was widely shared. However, a certain bifurcation point could be detected.

Vol.27 No.4

Objectives : This paper analyze several version of Danbangshinpyon(單方新編), a simple medical book that was widely used in the private sector from late Joseon dynasty to Japanese colonial period in Korea. Since it had not only collected the treatments easy to get around but also translated the classical Chinese into Korean, Danbangshinpyon(單方新編) was popular in the environment of poor medical service for the people. Methods : We compared several types of issue having heen popular either in the form of plate printing or as manuscripts until recently. Enlarged edition of Danbangshinpyon(增補單方新編) was edited in 1913, and it had been published a total of 13 times until 1922 with 8th edition. On the other hand, it is regarded that the contents of which are again included into Shinpyonmyobang(新篇妙方) published in 1938. Results : Danbangshinpyon was edited to match the demand for medical care at the time in 1909 on the basis of previously existing Gyungheombang(經驗方) of that time. Taking advantage of the public popularity of Danbangshinpyon, Enlarged edition of Danbangshinpyon was hurriedly constructed with weak consideration of upgrading the content. Shinpyonmyobang(新篇妙方) contains the whole content of Danbangshinpyon(單方新編) in the second half of it. Surveying details in the Shinpyonmyobang, one can find that it had been edited to copytext Enlarged edition of Danbang-shinpyon rather than Danbangshinpyon(單方新編). In other words, it is presumed to have been re-edited after the publication of Enlarged edition of Danbangshinpyon

Vol.31 No.1

Objectives : This paper provides a general introduction of a person Seopa Lee-yidoo and the contents of his medical text, Uigamsanjeonyogyul. The paper then investigates how this text summarized and recomposed Donguibogam. Methods : The paper first reviews the activities and academic leanings of Lee-yidoo, the author of Uigamsanjeonyogyul, as described in his book Seopa-munjip. Furthermore, the paper compares Donguibogam and Uigamsanjeonyogyul's process of summarizing Donguibogam. Based on this the paper divides these comparisons and introduces examples. Results : When the overall composition, formation, and the original contents of Uigamsanjeonyogyul were compared with the texts of Donguibogam, it was discovered that the former wholly accepted the composition of the latter but made bold summarizations. Meanwhile, Uigamsanjeonyogyul added a detailed list of contents at the beginning of the book, and its original contents provided integration, relocation, and detailed explanations of Donguibogam two sections. It gave changes to bogam's prescription configuration and explanations on the mechanism of diseases, and it also added a section for new prescriptions. Like this, Uigamsanjeonyogyul showed a great deal of knowledge regarding the clinical field. Conclusions : Uigamsanjeonyogyul which was published as a summary of Donguibogam, faithfully follows the texts of Donguibogam. At the same time, it provides summary, improvement, and rearrangement based on the author's academic leanings.

        전종욱(Jong-Wook Jeon),하승록(Seung-Rok Ha),이정화(Jeong-Hwa Lee),임보경(Bo-Kyung Lim),최선미(Sun-Mi Choi) 한국의사학회 2011 한국의사학회지 Vol.24 No.2

This study focuses on the origin and the literature of eyelid-acupuncture, nunchim therapy in Korea and its present clinical usage in modern Korea. The therapy is called nunchim at local area of Korea and has been transmitted as folk remedy because its real practice has been fallen into oblivion in the regular medical institution in modern Korea. On the contrast, some old women called nunchim-halmae, still know its practice and give medical therapy in a certain irregular way, While many kinds of eye clinics are prevalent in Korea, some patients with chronic eye diseases still go to get the nunchim therapy from nunchim-halmae. Moreover some oriental medical doctors have learned the therapy from nunchim-halmae and performed that medical service in their clinics in spite of absence of medical insurance coverage. Nunchim has unique historic origin and transmission linage in Korea, which was shed light on by this research. We present concise structure of the essence of nunchim therapy and 80 year old woman case of dramatic eye curing with the therapy.
