The total water-soluble carbohydrates (TSC) in orchardgrass stubble accumulated during the period of cool season; and declined when the weather was hot and dry. During the period of cool season, the reserve level decreased when a new leaf emerged after the start of plant growth and then increased rapidly, however, decreased after seed ripening. Levels of carbohydrate content decreased sharply following the top-dressing applied simultaneously with the cutting. When the top-dressing was followed by the period of hot dry weather, carbohydrate reserves were often reduced to critical levels. In such weather conditions, the top-dressing on orchardgrass should be restricted.

Management recommendations for birdsfoot trefoil(Lotus corniculatus L.) are based mainly on research conducted in the northem USA. The relevance of this work to southern-adapted birdsfoot trefoil cultivars needs to be examined. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of nitrogen supply and Rhizobium inoculation on the growth and nitrogen fixation of southern-adapter birdsfoot trefoil, AU Dewey and Fergus Cultivats developed in Alabama and Kentucky, respectively, were grown in pots in a green house at the University of Georgia from January 5 to June 22, 1989. This experiment was arranged in a split-split plot design with two nitrogen levels (Non-N supply, N supply) as the main plot, two varieties(AU Dewey, Fergus) as the subplot, and Rhizobium inoculation (Non-inoculation, Inoculation) as the sub-subplot, in four replications. 1. Dry weights of shoots, roots, and nodules, as well as acetylene reduction activity(AItA) of AU Dewey were greater than those of Fergus. 2. Supplemental nitrogen caused an increase in dry weights of shoots and toots but a decrease in ARA and nodule dry weight of trefoil. Effect of Rhizobium inoculation appeared only in the non-nitrogen supplement group. 3. Until 21 weeks after sowing, ARA of the two cultivars increased and then decreased after that time. 4. Total nitrogen contents in shoots and roots of the two cultivars were not affected by supplemental nitrogen and Rhizobium inoculation.

The crude protein content of Korean native reed was highest in the initial stage, decreased gradually as the growth progressed. Crude fiber content decreased in a manner opposite to that of crude protein. Dry matter digestibility determined by in vitro method was highest during May and decreased gradually as the growing stage progressed. The contents of mineral elements and amino acid show a low level. There was a significant positive correlation (p$lt;0.05) between in vitro dry matter digestibility and the content of crude protein, and was a significant negative correlation (p$lt;0.05) between in vitro dry matter digestibility and the content of crude fiber or that of ADF.

This experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of slope exposure (North and South) and altitude (250m, 350m, and 500m) on the dry matter yield of mountain pasture. The experiment was allocated as a randomized block design with 4 replications and was undertaken over a period of 20 months from February, 1986 to October, 1987. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. The rate of growth and total yield were influenced greatly by slope orientation and altitude. 2. At all altitudes dry matter yield of grasses was higher on the northern slope than on the southern slope. 3. Dry matter yields of grasses on both side of slope were high in the following order, beginning with the altitudes least produced; 250m, 350m and 500m.

This study was conducted to investigate the influence of nitrate accumulation in Italian ryegrass feeding on the change of methemoglobin and hemoglobin in sheep. 12 Corriedale wethers(average body weight 33kg) were fed Italian ryegrass containing average 0.469% N0₃ N. Blood samples were taken at l hour before feeding and 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 hours after feeding, and then hemoglobin and methemoglobin concentration in blood were determined. The results obtained were summerized as follows ; 1. No significant difference was observed in the changing pattern of hemoglobin concentration in blood. 2. There were large variations among the test animals in the capacity of methemoglobin formation of the Italian ryegrass feeding.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of the level of nitrate on the nitrate metabolism including methemoglobin formation in blood. 12 corriedale wethers fed on concentrates and Italian ryegrass hay were administered intraruminally three different levels of sodium nitrate (0.34g, 0.458 and 0.568 per ㎏ of body weight) as 30%o (w/v) aqueous solution via rumen fistula. Rumen fluid and blood samples were taken at 1, 2 or 3hr. intervals, and time courses of ruminal pH and nitrite concentration in the rumen, and PCV, hemoglobin and methemoglobin content in blood were determined. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The concentration of nitrite in rumen fluid after administration of sodium nitrate into the rumen was highest in the 0.56g sodium nitrate lot, in which the highest methemoglobin formation was found. 2. No appreciable difference was observed in the changing pattern of ruminal pH by the different levels of sodium nitrate application. 3. The concentration of hernoglobin and PCV in blood were increased when the test animals were ingested 0.56g sodium nitrate per ㎏ of body weight. 4. Sodium nitrate (0.34g, 0.45g and 0.56g per ㎏ of body weight) administered in the rumen resulted in a methemoglobin formation corresponding to 19.2%, 22.0% and 47.0% conversion of the total hemoglobin. 5. The individual difference in the capacity of methemoglobin formation and NO₂ concentration in blood plasma after administration of sodium nitrate seemed to be mainly due to the individual difference in the concentration of nitrite in the rumen fluid. 6. Three wethers died, and their maximum methemoglobin values recorded were 67.0%, 80.8% and 87.8% respectively.

This experiment was conducted with 72 crossbred pigs to evaluate the nutritive values of dried reed meal (Phragmites communis Trinius) in growing-finishing swine rations replacing 10% wheat bran with dried reed meal (DRM) at the levels of 0,3,6 and 9%. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. It was found that DRM was markedly high in crude fiber, however, other nutrient contents including protein, amino acids and most minerals were lower than those of wheat bran. The values of DE and ME of DRM were 1,787 and 1,699 ㎉/㎏, respectively and those of wheat bran were 3,273 and 3,029 ㎉/㎏, respectively. In general, nutrients in wheat bran were more digestible than those in DRM. 2. Nine percent substitution of DRM for wheat bran in growing-finishing swine diet did not severely affect the growth rate but increased feed consumption and feed conversion rate. Digestibilities of dry matter, crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, nitrogen retention and energy digestibility or metabolizability tended to be decreased as the level of DRM in the rations increased. 3. Carcass quality evaluation revealed that the back fat thickness of pigs tended to be thinner, however, dressing percentages, carcass lengths and loin eye areas decreased, as the level of DRM in the diets increased. Based upon the results of present study, it may be concluded that partial substitution of DRM for grain by-products in the ration of growing-finishing swine may be possible, if digestible energy, indispensable amino acids and phosphorus sources are properly added.
질소시비수준이 Italian ryegrass 및 청예 옥수수의 질산염 축적에 미치는 영향

This study was conducted to investigate the influence of the level of nitrogen fertilization and cutting date on the nitrate accumulation in Italian ryegrass and forage corn. Italian ryegrass and forage corn were applied with three different levels of nitrogen fertilization(10, 20 and 40kg N/10a), and the experiment was performed at the field of CNU in kwang-ju, from 1986 to 1987. The results obtained were summerized as follows : l. Significant difference were observed in nitrate concentration in Italian ryegrass and forage corn when nitrogen fertilizer were applied(p $lt;0.05). 2. The concentration of nitrate in forage corn seems to be less than that in Italian ryegrass.
