Purpose: To investigate the stress degree of infertile women and its correlations with Qi-stasis. Methods: 162 women, enrolled for treatment at oriental hospital, completed Infertility Stress Scale, Stress Response Inventory and Qi-stasis questionnaire. Their demographic features and infertility-related factors were recorded. 137 infertile women and 25 normal subjects were analyzed. Results: 1. 43 infertile women(33.86%) among the sample group were diagnosed as Qi-stasis. 2. There were close score correlations among Infertility Stress Scale, Stress Response Inventory, and Qi-stasis(p=.000). 3. Experience of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), possibility of spontaneous pregnancy, coitus frequency, whether the spouse is the eldest son or not had the influences on Infertility Stress. Abortion experience had influences on stress response and Qi-stasis. 4. It was revealed that Infertile women(n=137) had significantly higher scores of ``Infertility Stress`` and subscales such as ``sexual satisfaction``, ``marital satisfaction``, ``familial adjustment``, ``social adjustment`` as well than control group(n=25). Conclusion: The results provide that the stress degree of infertile women had significant correlations with Qi-stasis and show the possibilities of oriental medicine treatment for stresses of infertile women.
말기신부전 환자에서 혈중 Adiponectin과 심혈관 질환

Background: Adiponectin is a fat-based protein that alters the insulin sensitivity, has anti-inflammatory properties, and reduces the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, this connection is unclear in patients with chronic wasting disease, such as heart failure or end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Therefore, this study examined the relationship between adiponectin and the cardiovascular risk/predictive factors in ESRD patients. Methods: The serum concentrations of adiponectin and leptin were measured in 48 adult patients on maintenance hemodialysis. In addition, the blood levels of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and cardiac troponin T (cTnT) as cardiovascular biomarkers were measured, and the CVD history was reviewed in order to determine if there was any correlation with adiponectin. Results: There was a significant correlation between the adiponectin levels and the serum concentrations of HDL-cholesterol (r=0.456, p=0.001), triglyceride (r=-0.528, p<0.001), and leptin (r=-0.427, p=0.002) and an inverse correlation with the body mass index (BMI) (r=-0.326, p=0.024). The BNP levels were positively correlated with the adiponectin concentrations (r=-0.372, p=0.009) and negatively correlated with the BMI (r=-0.310, p=0.032), and there was a slight positive correlation between cTnT and adiponectin (r=0.276, p=0.058). Patients with a history of CVD had higher levels of cTnT (p=0.012) and BNP (p=0.017), and a lower BMI (p=0.026) than patients without such a history. There was no significant difference in the adiponectin levels between the two patient groups. Conclusions: A higher adiponectin level is related to a favorable lipid profile. However, adiponectin is not directly associated with a history of CVD, and there was a correlation between a higher adiponectin level and a higher BNP and lower BMI, which are cardiovascular predictive factors, in ESRD patients. However, further research with more patients will be needed to properly determine the complicated relationship between adiponectin and the development of CVD. (Korean J Med 71:646-653, 2006)

Vasculitis may be a manifestation of the paraneoplastic syndrome in association with solid and hematological cancers. There are few reports of paraneoplastic antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis in patients with solid tumors. Wegener`s granulomatosis is a systemic vasculitis characterized by necrotizing granulomatous vasculitis of the upper and lower respiratory tracts together with glomerulonephritis and are ANCA-positive. We experienced a case of Wegener`s granulomatosis complicated by non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) and we report this case with a brief review of the literature.(Korean J Med 73:336-341, 2007)

연구배경 : 클라미디아 감염의 진단은 혈청검사로 이루어진다. 현재 표준 방법은 MIF(microimmunofluorescence)이나 이 방법은 주관적이고 시간이 많이 걸리는 단점이 있다. 최근을 SPR(surface plasmon resonance) 센서를 이용한 단백질 칩이 감염의 새로운 진단 방법으로 제시되고 있다. 클라미디아 감염의 진단을 위한 단백질 칩 개발을 위하여 금 칩 표면에 세균을 고정하고 클라미디아 균에 대한 항체와 표면 위 세균과의 반응을 SPR 센서를 이용하여 측정하고자 하였다. 방법 : 표면 항원으로 배양한 Chlamydophila pneumoniae LKK1의 EB를 정제하였다. 양전하를 띤 PDDA(polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride)를 이용하여 전하를 이용한 단백질 칩을 제작하였다. 클라미디아 균을 고정시킨 후에 atomic force microscopy를 이용하여 표면을 관찰하였다. 클라미디아 균에 대한 항체를 투여하고 나서 자체 제작한 SPR 센서를 이용하여 항원 항체 반응을 SPR 파장 변화로 측정하였다. 결과 : 양전하를 띤 PDDA 표면위에서 클라미디아 균이 고정되었음을 확인 하였다. 그리고 항체를 투여한 후에 SPR 파장의 증가를 확인하였다. 파장 변화는 항원의 농도와 관련이 있었다. 결론 : 전하를 이용하여 클라미디아 폐렴균의 EB를 단백질 칩에 고정하였고, 단백질 칩 위에서의 항원 항체 반응을 확인하였다. 비정형 폐렴의 진단에 SPR 센서가 기여할 수 있을 것으로 사료되나, 실제 임상 시료에의 적용을 위해서는 좀더 연구가 필요할 것으로 사료된다. Background; The diagnosis of chlamydial infection is based on serology. The current gold standard of diagnosis is MIF(microimmunofluorescence), but this modality is subjective and time-consuming. Protein microarray with using a SPR(surface plasmon resonance) sensor has recently been suggested as a method for detecting infection. For developing a protein chip to diagnose chlamydial infection, EBs(elementary bodies) were immobilized on a gold chip and the interaction between an antibody for Chlamydophila pneumoniae and the EBs(elementary bodies) immobilized on the surface of the gold chip was measured by using an SPR sensor. Methods; For the surface antigen, the EBs of Chlamydophila pneumoniae LKK1 were purified. Charged arrays were prepared by using PDDA(polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride) which has a positive charge. After immobilization of the chlamydial EBs on the PDDA surface, the investigation of the surface was done with using atomic force microscopy. After the antibody for C. pneumoniae was applied on chip, we monitored the SPR wavelength-shift to detect any antigen-antibody interaction with using a self-assembled SPR sensor. Results; The chlamydial EBs on the positively charged PDDA were visible on the surface with using atomic force microscopy. The SPR wavelength increased after interaction of antibody for C. pneumoniae with the EBs immobilized on charged gold surface. The wavelength-shift was correlated with the concentration of antigens. Conclusion; The surface immobilization of EBs on the gold surface with the charged arrays was identified and the antigen-antibody interaction on the gold chip was detected via the SPR sensor. Further investigations are needed to apply this technique to the clinical field. (Tuberc Respir Dis 2006; 60: 412-418)

Bovine corneal opacity and permeability assay have been proposed as reliable alternatives to the Draize test. In this study, we measured the opacity of the bovine cornea by quantifying the ability of light to pass through it using opacitometer. We obtained the regular value of basal opacity using bovine cornea collected within three hours after killing. For opacity alone, values obtained for 3 chemicals that are already known as irritants showed a correlation of r=0.994 (p=0.001) with Draize score about same materials. Comparing to reference Draize data from ECVAM (European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods), a correlation coefficient with our Draize score for the 3 chemicals was 0.982 (p=0.003). Bovine cornea test data of additional 3 chemicals already known as irritants showed a correlation of r=0.968 (p<0.001) with reference Draize data from ECVAM. Then the bovine cornea opacity test and Draize test with 3 cosmetics were performed. In both tests, we obtained similar results that showed all cosmetics were non-irritant. These results indicate that bovine corneal opacity assay has the potentiality to be developed as alternatives to rabbit eye irritation test.
