Vol.38 No.1

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the main and interaction effects of mothers’ parental internal attributions and neuroticism on self-perception of the parental role. Methods: A total of 138 mothers with toddlers in Seoul and other big cities in Korea completed questionnaires, and data were analyzed by Pearsons correlation and multiple regression analyses. Results: The results were as follows: First, mothers who attributed their successful parenting to ability showed lower satisfaction, and mothers who attributed their successful parenting to ability and effort showed higher feelings of equilibrium. Mothers with higher levels of neuroticism showed higher competence, parental investment, and satisfaction in their self-perception of the parental role. Second, there were significant interaction effects between ability attribution and neuroticism on feelings of equilibrium, between effort attribution and neuroticism on feelings of equilibrium, between ability attribution and neuroticism on competence, and between effort attribution and neuroticism on parenting investment. Conclusion: The findings of this research indicate that neuroticism showed a positive effect on self-perception of the parental role because neuroticism indicates sensitivity in parenting. Further, the effects of neuroticism on self-perception of the parental role differed by mothers internal attribution.

Vol.31 No.6

The purpose of the present study was to develop a structural model, of which the effect of parents` psychological control, depressive dispositions, and depression upon the self-esteem of adolescents. The participants were 458 adolescents recruited from high schools and universities (M age=17.4 yrs; SD=1.75) in Seoul and its vicinity. Data were collected through self-reporting questionnaires for adolescents. Firstly, we estimated the hypothesized meditation model which includes paths from parents` psychological to self-esteem through adolescents` depressive experiences and depression. Structural Equation Modeling analysis using AMOS revealed that the hypothesized mediation model yielded an acceptable model fit and all hypothesized path coefficients were found to be significant. Specifically, it indicated that the more parents try to exert psychological control over their children, the more depressive experiences adolescents have and in turn, they had a greater tendency towards becoming depressed and having lower self esteem. It was also found that neither gender difference nor age difference existed in the structural model.

Vol.27 No.2

This study considers the direct effects of parental insecure attachment on negative anger expression of college students. It also examines the indirect effects of dysfunctional mentalization and rejection sensitivity, which mediate parental insecure attachment and negative anger expression. Questionnaires were administered to 389 college students(male 160, female 229, M = 21.19, SE = 2.04), and data were analyzed to examine sequential mediation effects the among variables using PROCESS macro methods. The research results are as follows; First, parental insecure attachment had significant direct effects on negative anger expression of college students. Secondly, parental insecure attachment indirectly affected negative anger expression by mediating dysfunctional mentalization and rejection sensitivity, leading to sequential mediation effects on dysfunctional mentalization and rejection sensitivity. These findings indicate that it is necessary to adopt an integrated approach that considers parental insecure attachment, dysfunctional mentalization, and rejection sensitivity when analyzing the negative anger expressions of college students. This will lead to a more comprehensive understanding and implications of the internal working model formed by parental attachment.

Vol.15 No.4

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the sequential mediating effects of self-esteem and positive peer play interaction between warmth parenting and the social competence of preschoolers. Methods: The 7th wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children(2014) was used to analyze 1,113 preschoolers. Sequential mediation effects were analyzed using SPSS Process Macro(Hayes, 2013). Results: Warmth parenting indirectly affected preschooler s social competence(cooperation, assertion, self-control) by yielding sequential mediation effects on self-esteem and peer play interaction. Namely, warmth parenting does not directly affect social competence but does have a significant effect on preschooler self-esteem, which positively affected peer play interaction. This path increases the social competence(cooperation, assertion, self-control) of preschool children. Conclusion/Implications: In order to increase the social competence (cooperation, assertion, self-control) of preschool children, it is important for the preschooler to consider themselves a worthy person and to learn positive interaction techniques through warmth parenting.

Vol.15 No.2

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the influence of the moderated mediating effect of mentalization by self-esteem on the relationship between attachment to parents and anger regulation among college students. Methods: This study included 389 college students (229: 58.9% female and 160: 41.1% male, Mage = 21.19, SE = 2.04). The participants completed self-report questionnaires designed to assess attachment to their parents, mentalization, self-esteem, and anger regulation. Data were analyzed for moderated mediating effects between variables using PROCESS macro models 1, 4, 14. Results: First, mentalization fully mediated the relationship between parental attachment and anger regulation. This is the more stable the attachment formed with parents, the more the mentalizing ability developed, which improved anger regulation. Second, self-esteem moderated the relationship between mentalization and anger regulation. Even when self-esteem was low, mentalization effected on anger regulation. However, as self-esteem increased, the effect of mentalization on anger regulation increased. Finally, self-esteem moderated the mediating effects of mentalization on the relationship between parental attachment and anger regulation. This means that the higher the self-esteem, the greater the mediating effect of mentalization between attachment to the parent and anger regulation. Conclusions: This study provides academic and practical information by understanding the importance of parental attachment, mentalization, and self-esteem, and confirms that these factors serve as protective factors for anger regulation.
