Telomere Length of Tumor Tissues and Survival in Patients with Early Stage Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Introduction: Telomere shortening leads to genomic instability that drives oncogenesis through the activation of telomerase and the generation of other mutations necessary for tumor progression. This study was conducted to determine the impact of telomere shortening on the survival of patients with early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods: Relative telomere length in tumor tissues was measured by quantitative polymerase chain reaction in 164 patients with surgically-resected NSCLC. The association between telomere length and overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) was analyzed. Results: When the patients were categorized into quartiles based on telomere length, those patients with the 1st quartile (shortest) of telomere length had a significantly worse OS and DFS compared to patients with the 2nd to the 4th quartiles of telomere length (adjusted hazard ratio for OS=2.67, 95% confidence interval=1.50-4.75, p=0.001; and adjusted hazard ratio for DFS=1.92, 95% confidence interval=1.17-3.14, p=0.01). An association between telomere length and survival outcome was more pronounced in squamous cell carcinomas than adenocarcinomas (p-value of test for homogeneity for OS and DFS=0.05 and 0.02, respectively). Conclusion: Telomere length of tumor tissues is an independent prognostic factor in patients with surgically resected early stage NSCLC.

Association between Genetic Variants in Pre-microRNAs and Survival of Early Stage Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

Introduction: Altered miRNA expression plays an important role in the initiation and progression of lung cancer. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in pre-miRNAs could alter miRNAs processing, or expression, and hence, could influence the prognosis of lung cancer. We evaluated the effects of four SNPs in pre-miRNAs (pre-miR-146a rs2910164, pre-miR-149 rs2292832, pre-miR-196a rs11614913, and pre-miR-499 rs3746444) on the survival outcomes in early-stage NSCLC. Methods: Surgically resected 363 NSCLC patients were enrolled. The four SNPs were genotyped using a PCR-RFLP assay. The genotype associations with overall survival (OS) and disease free survival (DFS) were analyzed. Results: The pre-miR-149 rs2292832T>C and pre-miR-196a rs11614913C>T were found to be significantly associated with OS and DFS. The rs2292832 TC or CC genotype exhibited a significantly better OS and DFS compared to the rs2292832 TT genotype (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] for OS=0.66, p=0.01; and aHR for DFS=0.64, p=0.004). For the pre-miR-196a rs11614913C>T, patients with the CT or TT genotype had a significantly better OS and DFS than those with the CC genotype (aHR for OS=0.70, p=0.05; and aHR for DFS=0.66, p=0.01). When the two SNPs were combined, OS and DFS improved in a dose-dependent manner as the number of good genotypes increased (p=0.002; p=0.0001). Conclusions: These results suggest that miR-149 and miR-196a may be involved in the pathogenesis of NSCLC and that rs2292832 and rs11614913 can be used as prognostic markers for patients with surgically-resected early stage NSCLC.

지상파DMB 제한수신 시스템의 효율적인 설계 및 구현 방법

본격적인 지상파DMB 서비스가 시작되면서 사업자별로 다양한 데이터 서비스를 준비하는 등 비즈니스 모델 개발에 주력하고 있다. 이에 따라 DMB에 적합한 제한수신 시스템의 필요성이 이슈화되면서 국내에서는 현재 표준화 작업이 활활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 논문은 지상파DMB 방송환경에서의 적용을 목적으로 하는 지상파DMB 제한수신 서비스를 위한 앙상블 재다중화기와 수신 검증 플랫폼의 설계 및 구현 방법에 관해 제안한다. 또한 제안된 앙상블 재다중화기를 통하여 스크램블링된 앙상블 스트림을 송출하고, 수신검증 플랫폼을 통하여 적용된 스크램블 모드에 따라 디스크램블링 및 디코딩하여 이를 디스플레이 함으로써 그 성능을 검증하였다. As the Terrestrial DMB(T-DMB) has been launched, service providers are focusing on finding a business model as well as preparing the variety of data services. So, the need for development of the CAS(Conditional Access system) is urgently required and its domestic standardization is also in progress. This Paper proposes design and implementation methods of an Ensemble Re-multiplexer and receiver platform for its verification that can be used for the CAS system in T-DMB. And, with transmitting ensemble stream scrambled by the proposed Ensemble Re-multiplexer, we verified their performance by do-scrambling and decoding according to scramble mode at the receiver platform.

Parent isolates and first-generation(F₁) progenies from single-sporangium of Phytophthora infestans were investigated for the acqusition of metalaxyl and streptomycin sulfate(SM) resistance. The parent isolates, KM10, U6, CDB6 showed resistance to metalaxyl, and F817, DNC303, DN107 to SM. Especially, the average mycelial growth of F₁ progenies of F817, CDB6, JD1 was more than 51% than parent isolates on 25ppm metalaxyl added V-8 juice agar, whereas those of KM10, U6, JD1 were extended more than 51% similar on 200ppm SM treatment. They acquired resistance on the basis of the standard in this experiment. There were positive correlations between parent isolates and F₁colonies in resistance. The F₁colonies obtained from parent isolates showing above intermediate resistance on metalaxyl amended agar acquired much resistance.

지상파DMB에서 끊김없는 프로그램의 전환을 위한 스플라이서의 설계 및 구현

본격적인 지상파DMB 서비스가 시작됨에 따라, 중앙 또는 다른 방송국으로부터 들어오는 방송신호를 재송신하던 도중에 지방의 방송국에서 필요한 지역광고 및 특정 프로그램을 보내고자 하는 경우에 스플라이싱 기법이 필요하게 된다. 본 논문에서는 MPEG-4 및 MPEG-2 시스템을 동시에 사용하고 있는 지상파DMB에서 효율적인 스플라이싱을 위해 요구되는 신호 흐름에 대해 제안하며, 지상파DMB에서 신호 전송 시 사용되는 앙상블스트림으로의 재구성 과정에 대해 설명한다. 또한, 설계된 DMB 스플라이싱 기술을 적용하여 제작된 스플라이서를 통해서 전송스트림을 스위칭했을 때, 수신기에서 영상을 디코딩하여 비교함으로써 그 성능을 검증하였다. As the T-DMB service is launched, some service requirements become necessary to send local programs such as advertisement and specific programs at the local broadcasting station while re-transmitting the broadcasting signal coming from the central or other station. In this paper, we propose a signalflow required for the effective splicing in the T-DMB system which usesboth MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 system specifications, and we illustrate the reconfiguring process into the ensemble stream that is widely used for the transmission of the T-DMB signal. Moreover, its performance is confirmed by comparing the images decoded at the recevier when the transport stream is swiched by using the splicer implemented through the proposed techniques.

LKB1 pathway variant and the prognosis of non-small cell lung cancer after surgical resection

This study was conducted to investigate the associations between polymorphisms of genes involved in LKB1 pathway and the prognosis of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after surgical resection. Twenty-three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in LKB1 pathway were investigated in a total of 782 patients with NSCLC who underwent curative surgery. The association of the SNPs with overall survival (OS) and disease free survival (DFS) were analyzed. Among the 23 SNPs investigated, TSC2 rs30259G>A was significantly associated with survival outcomes in multivariate analyses. The TSC2 rs30259G>A was associated with significantly worse OS and DFS (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] for OS=1.88, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.21-2.91, P=0.005; aHR for DFS=1.65, 95% CI=1.15-2.38, P=0.01, under codominant model, respectively). When stratified by tumor histology, the SNP was significantly associated with survival outcomes only in squamous cell carcinoma, but not in adenocarcinoma. This study suggests that TSC2 rs30259G>A may be useful for the prediction of prognosis in patients with early stage NSCLC after curative surgery.

공공도서관의 사회적 역할 확대를 위한 독서진흥활동에 대한 연구

As society has more interest in reading activities, it has become possible to secure social value of libraries through the promotion of reading. In this regard, the study aimed to analyze social tasks that the libraries face and suggest concrete methods through bibliographical examination. Currently, various regions of the nation have an increasing interest in libraries, particularly, children's libraries. The public libraries can expand their social roles by meeting these social requests. As a variety of activities by the public libraries to promote reading have helped people recognize the importance of libraries, more aggressive reading promotion activities are considered to help expand the roles of the public libraries and secure social base. Accordingly, the libraries need to take the initiative in implementing various measures by establishing a committee to adjust various reading promotion activities in the government and the public and private sectors, coming up with legal base, pursuing development of voluntary reading promotion programs, establishing an information network for reading and books, publishing book reviews, leading campaign for reading and reading promotion activities, supporting reading at home and expanding award system with regard to the promotion of reading.
