Torque fluctuation of an engine and angular velocity variation of a propeller shaft are the main excitation sources in a vehicle driveline. This paper presents the mechanism of these excitation sources. An equivalent model of the engine system and propeller shaft system is constructed to simulate the excitation phenomena. The analytical model contains the geometrical and dynamic mechanism. Combustion pressure of the cylinder is measured from dynamometer. The computer simulation is carried out by commercial program package. Results of the simulations show the characteristics of the torsional excitation source of the driveline.

Carbon fiber reinforced composites(CFRP) were fabricated with phenolic resin matrix by hot press molding, and its surface was modified by the ion-assisted reaction process. When we tested the friction coefficient and wear rate variation and observed the effect of fibers with respect to friction and wear characteristics, the amount of pitch based carbon fiber was 45wt% and the average friction coefficient was the lowest at 0.12. When the amount of ion-irradiation was 1×10¹? ions/㎠, the friction coefficient of the composites was about 0.12 and the wear mode was stable, whereas, the friction coefficient of the non-treated composites was about 0.16 and the wear mode was very unstable. But if the amount of ion-irradiation was 5×10¹? ions/㎠, the friction coefficients were higher compared to that of 1×10¹? ions/㎠ ion-irradiation case.

In order to determine the wear properties of PECVD ceramic coatings, wear process was evaluated using the coated pin of Falex Tribo system. Coating materials deposited wear the TiC, TiN and Ti(CN). An experimental process was established to determine the tribological characteristics of friction and wear behavior under the variation of applied load, temperature and sliding distance by the Falex test machine. The experimental results indicate that TiN coatings compared with TiC coatings on the materials have the excellent friction and wear characteristics. However TiC coatings compared with TiN coatings have a low friction coefficient with steel and good thermal stability, and Ti(CN) has the excellent anti-wear property as well as the superiority of extreme pressure property. Compound coatings compared with simple coatings show improved tribological characteristics.
