An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of harvesting date of rye and planting date of succeeding corn grown for silage on annual forage yield and quality of rye - corn double cropping system during the two - year period 1986-1987 at the Experimental Livestock Farm, College of Agriculture, Seoul National University, Suweon. The results obtained are as follows: Crude protein (CP) content and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of forage rye was decreased with the later dates of harvesting, but acid detergent fiber(ADF) and neutral detergent fiber(NDF) contents were increased. Average CP, ADP, NDF contents and IVDMD of forage rye harvested on April 20 were 22.7, 24.7, 42.8, and 89.7%, respectively, but those of rye harvested on May 13 were 12.2, 42.9, 74.4, and 70.7%, respectively. Dry matter, CP and IVDDM yields of forage rye were significantly increased (P $lt;0.05) with the later dates of harvesting. Average dry matter yields of rye varieties harvested on April 20 and 30, and May 13 were 2,830, 4,062, and 7,814 kg/ha, respectively. Dry matter, CP and IVDDM yields of Elbon(early) and Koolgrazer(Early-Medium) harvested at different dates were significantly higher than those of Kodiak(late) with the exception of CP and IVDDM yields harvested on May 13. Dry matter yield of early maturing rye was markedly higher than that of late maturing rye when harvesting was specially made at the earlier date of April 20. Crude protein content and IVDMD of corn varieties were not consistent with planting dates and varieties, but ADf and NDF contents of early maturing corn were slightly higher than those of late maturing corn at the same harvesting date. Average dry matter, CP and IVDDM yields of corn varieties were significantly decreased with the later dates of planting, but no varietal difference was found when planting was made at the same date. Average dry matter yields of corn varieties planted on April 20 and 30, and May 13 were 17,630, 15,945 and 13,300 ㎏/㏊, respecti- vely. Dry matter percentages of early maturing corn(DK 547) planted on April 20 and 30, and May 13 were 27.4, 27.5 and 24.8%, respectively, but those of medium(DK 729) and late(Pioneer 3160) maturing corns were decreased at greater rate, 20.9 to 24.7% regardless of earlier planting. Of the 27 different cropping systems of rye-corn, annual dry matter yields of 23 to 24t/ha obtained from three cropping systems (rye - Pioneer 3160 corn) harvested and planted on May 13, were significantly higher (P $lt;0.05) than the remaining 24 cropping systems producing 19 to 22 t/ha, but the quality of forages produced from the three cropping systems was the lowest one. Based on the results obtained in this experiment and on information now available regarding corn silage fermentation, it is considered that the double cropping system, such as early harvesting of early maturing variety of rye and early planting of early maturing variety of corn to be harvesed before the rainy season of autumn for silage, can be one of the recommendable forage production system in the north central area of Korea, if forage productivity and quality were equally emphasized.

In order to select higher yielding forage suited for silage, the yield performance and associated characteristics of 23 introduced sorghum-sudangrass hybrids (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) have been evaluated at the Experimental Livestock Farm, COA, SNU, Suweon in 1979 and 1981. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. NK 367, Pioneer 931 and FS 24 gave significant highest forage yields than the control variety, Suweon 19 hybrid corn (P $lt; 0.05). There were no significant differences in forage yield between FS 4, FS 25A, T-E TDN, X 4318, Silo Milo and Suweon 19 hybrid corn, but these sorghum-sudangrass hybrids were the better forage producers. 2. Average grain percentages to the total forage yield of various hybrids tested ranged from 9.8% for FS 24 to 44.8% for FS 351 except NK 367. The grain percentages of FS 351 and Silo Milo were the highest and similar to that of Suweon 19 hybrid corn where 43.5% grain was obtained. 3. FS 251, NK 326 and FS lA headed and flowered early than other hybrids, while Pioneer 931, T-E TDN, X 4318 and Pioneer 944 showed later. NK 367 was the latest hybrid in maturity. 4. NK 367 and Pioneer 931 were found to be as tall type hybrids, while FS 251 and FS 351 appeared short types. Although no diseases and lodging were found in most hybrids, T-E Goldmaker was susceptible to leaf disease and SS IV gave severe lodging during the growing season. 5. The results indicated that Silo Milo, X 4318, FS 25A and T-E Silomaker have high silage yield potential with moderately high grain, and NK 367, Pioneer 931, FS 24, T-E TDN and FS 4 also have high yield potential with relatively low grain.
