Peroxides in natural products have been recently received a considerable attention due to their various biological and pharmacological properties. Nearly 300 peroxides have been isolated and structually characterized from natural sources, mainly as constituents of Compositae and marine sponge, and occur randomly in about 10 other plant families. Among peroxides studied, sesquiterpene endoperoxide, quinghaosu, has been already clinically applied as a new antimalarial drug. Based on the peroxides reported, structural classification, natural distribution and biological and pharmacological activities are reviewed. Color reagent and spectroscopic identification of peroxide are also described.

Polysaccharides fractions from the leaves of Artemisia selengensis(ASP1) and Artemisia iwayomogi(AIP1) were extracted and purified by Sephadex gel filtration and DEAE-Sephadex ion exchange chromatographies. Both ASP1 and AIP1 fractions were tested for their effects on the spleen cell culture in vitro. Both ASP1 and AIP1 fractions allow growth of spleen cells up to 3 months in culture, suggesting the immunoregulatory activities of those polysaccharide fractions. The molecular weights of ASP1 and AIP1 fractions were found to be about 2,500 daltons by Sephadex gel filtration chromatography using standard dextrans. Both ASPl and AIPl fractions were composed of glucose, xylose and galactose.

N/A Inflammation is a frequent radiation-induced following therapeutic irradiation. Treatment of human umbilical endothelial cells (HUVEC) with γ-irradiation (γIR) induces the expression of adhesion proteins such as intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and E-selectin. Since the upregulation of these proteins on endothelial cell surface has been known to be associated with inflammation, interfering with the expression of adhesion molecules is an important therapeutic target. In the present study, we demonstrate that bioflavonoid rutin inhibits γIR induced expression of ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and E-selectin on HUVEC in a dose- and time dependent manner. Rutin also inhibited yIR induced production of NO. These data suggest that rutin has therapeutic potential for the treatment of various inflammatory disorder associated with an increase of endothelial leukocyte adhesion molecules.

The phytochemical study of Cacalia koraiensis Nakai (Compositae) led to the isolation of eight compounds, β-sitosterol (1) stifmasterol (2), phytol (3), β-sitosterol-3-0-glucopyranoside (4), adenostylol (5), campesterol (6), ger- macradien-4α-ol (7), and quercetin-3-rhamnoside (8). Their structures were established by chemical and spectroscopic methods. The cat()toxicity of the isolated compounds was evaluated by SRH assay against five cultured human tumor cell lines.

From the ethanol extract of the leaves of Artemisia selengensis a new sesquiterpene endoperoxide, bisabolene-2,5-endoperoxide, has been isolated. The structure of the peroxide was established on the basis of spectroscopic evidence.

N/A Many attention has been focused on developing new chemotherapeutic agents for a treatment of cancer from natural products. From Carpesium divaricatum S. et Z. (Compositae), various monoterpenoid compounds were isolated and exhibited mild antitumor activity against human tumor cell lines. `These facts prompted us to explore the structure-activity relationship of these compounds. The synthesis of monoterpenoid compound was accomplished by Fries rearrangement, Grignard reaction, elimination, allylic oxidation, esterification and epoxidation as key steps. The results of in vitro cytotoxicity (A549, SK-OV-3, SK-MEL-2, XF498, HCT15) of the synthesised compounds are as follows: First of all, epoxide moiety is prerequisite for cytotoxic activity in diester compound. Any kind of compounds with olefin or diol moiety instead of epoxide ring exhibited poor or mild cytotoxic activity respectively. Of o-acetoxy and isobutoxy epoxy esters, p-substituted phenylacetate compounds exhibited high cytotoxic activities against SK-MEL-2 and HCT15.

alpha-Linolenic acid ethylester, C19 spiroketalenolether polyyne, herniarin and steroid were isolated from the leaves of Artemisia selengesis (Compositae). The structures of the compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic evidence. Liver protective effects of these constituents were studied using galactosamine and CCl4-induced cytotoxicity in primary cultured rat hepatocytes.

The studies were attempted to investigate the therapeutic effect of Solanum lyratum extract(SLE) on the liver damage induced by carbon tetrachloride in rats. Male rats (Sprangue-Dawley) were treated with subchronic concentration of $CCl_4$, which was 1 mg/kg of $CCl_4$ via per oral administration daily for three days. The level of serum cholesterol, transaminase, bilirubin and BSP were measured. Treatment of SLE significantly decreased the increment in serum transaminase activities, total cholesterol and enlargement of liver but serum bilirubin was not reduced. The protective effect was observed when SLE was given daily for 4 weeks after $CCl_4$ treated for 3 days. SLE administration to rats prevented the development of fatty change, necrosis, and fibrosis induced by $CCl_4$. The results suggest that SLE has appreciable therapeutic effect on $CCl_4$ induced hepatotoxicity.

The hypoglycemic effect of mulberry leaves using alloxan-induced diabetic mice was investigated. The hypoglycemic effect of mulberry leaves was significantly affected with anaerobic incubation up to for 6 hrs. The body weight of mice treated with 20% anaerobic conditioned mulberry leaves was higher than that in the control group. Mulberry leaves which were treated with anaerobic condition significantly decreased blood glucose level in alloxan-induced type I diabetes mice. Furthermore, glucose tolerance was significantly recovered by feeding mulberry leaves anaerobically treated. Pathological analysis revealed that the disappearance of insulin-secreting beta-cells in the islets of Langerhans from the alloxan induced diabetic mice was strongly inhibited in the mulberry leaves feeding group. The content of 1-deoxynojirimycin increased up to 5% in detached mulberry leaves incubated under nitrogen gas for 6 hrs. Nevertheless, it is not clear whether the synthesis of 1-deoxynojirimycin is increased or the degradation of it is decreased. Overall, results obtained from this study indicate that the hypoglycemic effect was increased by the mulberry leaves with anaerobic treatment.

Two carotenoids and four flavonoids were isolated from the whole plant of Artemisia sylvatica Max. Their structures were identified as ${\beta}-carotene$, lutein, luteolin, rutin, $pectolinarigenin-7-O-{\beta}-glucopyranoside$ and luteolin-7-O-neohesperidoside on the basis of spectroscopic means.
