Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate for prognostic significance of VEGF expression and tumor angiogenesis in papillary carcinomas of the thyroid. Materials and Methods: The materials were 79 cases of papillary thyroid carcinomas, and age, sex, tumor size, multiplicity of tumor, capsular invasion, lymph node metastasis, recurrence, TNM stage, DeGroot stage and AMES scale were evaluated. An immunohistochemical stains for CD 34 to estimate microvessel density (MVD), and VEGF were done. MVD was defined as an average count of vessels per ×400 power field in the most vascularized area. VEGF expression was interpreted as 1+ and 2+ according to staining intensity and percentages of positive cells. Results: Mean score of MVD was 39.7±16.9. MVD were significantly higher in cases with capsular invasion (p=0.0001), lymph node metastasis (p=0.0001), TNM stage III (p=0.0022), DeGroot stage III (p=0.0163) and high risk group by AMES scale (p=0.0001). VEGF 2+ expression rate was significantly increased in cases with capsular invasion and lymph node metastasis (p=0.0006, p=0.0013), and in cases with TNM stage III, DeGroot stage III and high risk group by AMES scale (p=0.0236, p=0.0003, p=0.0293). In VEGF 2 + expression group, MVD was significantly higher than in VEGF 1 + group (p=0.0008), and MVD showed positive relation to VEGF 2 + expression (r=0.4616). Conclusion: VEGF expression and high MVD were significantly correlated to capsular invasion, lymph node metastasis, TNM stage III, DeGroot stage III and high risk group by AMES scale. The expression of VEGF and high MVD could be considered to be one of prognostic factor in papillary thyroid carcinomas.

      • 도리스 레씽의 " 황금 노트북 " 연구 : 의식과 소설 구조의 해체

About Doris Lessing's Tire Golden Notebook recent studies have the great interest in the division or breakdown of consciousness and of the novel's structure instead of unification or wholeness. This critical trend illustrates the shift from the New Critical focus on unity to contemporary theory's interest in discontinuity and illustrates, as well, reassessments of the conflicting self. In The Golden Notebook division and splitting are both narrative techniques and psychological patterns, for the novel is a crafted objective correlative for the central character's complex consciousness. The structure of the novel woven by Eve parts of $quot;Free Women$quot;, four sets of four notebooks, and the inner golden notebook presents continuous deconstruction and displacement and renaming of Anna's experiences and consciousness. Anna tries to break up present systems and enter into new world endlessly. In all the dimensions of her life - politics, literature, society, personal relationships including sexual one - she rejects the existing values and leaves the safety of myth. After painful rejections Anna wants to rename and reconstruct herself, and that process is paralleled with the successive rejection and deconstruction of the novel's structure. The rejection and dynamic deconstruction become a principle of creation after Anna meets Saul. In the inner golden notebook with the help of Saul Anna overcomes writer's block and can write a new novel that is The Golden Notebook. But in $quot;Free Women 5$quot; which is the last part of the novel Anna declares she is no longer going to writz a novel. So the novel leaves two problematic endings which more or less cancel each other and make a diacritical mark requiring the reader's active reading and choice of meaning. As the Anna's statement, $quot;out of Chaos, new kind of strength,$quot; through division and breakdown and subversion, the future might pour in a different shape - terrible perhaps, or marvellous, but something new. It is Anna's ability to risk the dissolutipn of the self that enables her to expand the boundaries of the self.

      • John Fowles 의 The French Lieutenant's Woman 에 나타난 정체성과 유동성 (flux) 의 의미

        윤혜경 한국강원영어영문학회 1994 영어영문학 Vol.13 No.1

In The French Lieutenant's Woman John Fowles presents various contrasting elements which are penetrated in the characters, particularly in the contrast of Sarah and Ernestina, and social class or social situations, etc. And these counterparting elements are gathered in the contrasting image of the stasis and the flux. In the final ending of this novel, the protagonist Charles recognizes life as a 'river of life, of mysterious laws and mysterious choice'. Before this realization he is in the static and rigid world of the Victorian society. The Victorian world emphasizes social duty and social convention but it is also very closed and hypocritical society which Charles must overcome. The appearance of Sarah makes him possible to enter the new and mysterious world he has dreamed of. The world Sarah presents seems open and ideal world full of possibilities. The fossil imagery- symbolizes the dead, closed world and the man captivated in that era. Charles is the character who frees himself from his age. Fowles presents this process with Darwin's evolution theory which considers constant change and flux in all the natural phenomenon. In the social point of view Charles is failed, but in the psychological and conscious dimension he is evolved. So Fowles uses Darwin's theory paradoxically. Instead of remaining as a Victorian fossil, Charles go ahead into the modern world. The growth of inner consciousness and change is represented through the image of the river and the sea in the conclusion of the novel. The river and the sea contains an infinite and mysterious possibilities and symbolizes the creative potentials of man. The final scene ends as Charles walks along the river. Like the continuous flow of the river he will search for the new possibilities of life and inner development and growth continuously.
