All muscle movements including breathing, walking, and fine motor skills rely on the function of the spinal motor neuron to transmit signals from the brain to individual muscle groups. Motor neuron diseases (MNDs) result from the progressive degeneration and deat of motor neurons. The two most studied MNDs are spinal muscular acrophy (SMA), a childhood genetic disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a adult-onset neurodegenerative disease. Both diseases involve neuromuscular dysfunction progressively leading to fatal paralysis. The potential of human pluripotent stem cells to treat patients with neurodegenerative disease is enormous. Stem cells can be introduced into clinical applications in several different ways, such as disease modeling, drug screening, and cell replacement therapy. Even though it may take quite a long time to address some problematice, the establishment and optimization of human stem cell differentiation protocols for clinical applications may hold the key to cure diverse disorders.

Mycoplasmas are smaller than bacteria (0.3-0.8 μm in diameter) and can be observed as filamentous or coccal forms. They may remain undetected by microscopic observation but can cause a reduction of growth rate, morphological changes, chromosomal aberrations, induction or suppression of cytokine expression, a change in membrane composition and alterations in the amino acid and nucleic acid metabolism of infected cells. In this study, we tried to remove the mycoplasma from infected human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) by combinational antibiotics treatment. In case of only moxifloxacin treatment, mycoplasma-specific gene was still detected in cultured hESCs. However, in case of double treatment of moxifloxacin and genramicin, mycoplasma-specific gene was removed completely. We confirmed normal karyotype from the double-treated hESCs by karyotype analysis. Our results suggest a stable and simple method for mycoplasma treatment in hESC culture.

Adult mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are self-renewable adherent stromal cells and differentiate into variable cell types. MSCs can be obtained from distinct tissue sources and have turned out to be successfully manipulated in vitro. It is now accepted that stem cells reside within the post-natal dental pulp. These postnatal populations also have MSC-like characteristics including the self-renewal and multilineage differentiation potential. Characterization of these cells and determination of their potential in terms of specificity of regenerative response may help direct new clinical treatments. Such approaches may provide innovative and novel tools for generation of clinical materials and/or treatments. This study aimed to review the possibility of dental stem cells and related technology for their future clinical applications in dental disease.

Parkinson`s disease (PD) is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease, next to Alzheimer`s disease, affecting approximately 0.5% of 65-69 year old adults. PD is a characterized by a progressive degeneration and loss of dopaminergic neurons within the substantia nigra pars compacta, leading to the classical symptoms of the disease, such as tremor, rigidity, and hypokinesia. Stem cells have a high capacity for self-renewal and differentiation potential and some of them can be differentiated into dopaminergic neurons on specific conditions. However, there are some postulations for clinical application of the stem cell-derived dopaminergic neurons. The stem cells grafts should exhibit a regulated release of dopamine and molecular, electrophysiological, and morphological properties similar to those of substantia nigra neurons, reestablish the dopamine network within the striatum and restore the functional connectivity with host extra-striatal neural circuitries and produce no adverse-effects such as tumor formation, immune reactions and graft-induced dyskinesias. In this review, we described the advantages and disadvantages of each characeteristic of variable stem cells with regard to its potential use for PD treatment.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is characterized by the loss or dysfunction of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and one of the major causes of irreversible blindness in the elderly. According to the presence or absence of choroidal neovascu -larization, advanced AMD can be classified into two types (dry AMD and wet AMD). Currenrly, no treatments can reverse dry AMD, regardless of the fact that dietary supplementation with defined vitamins and antioxidants has been shown to alleviate progression. Therefore, RPE replacement represents potential new approaches for dry AMD. Functional RPE cells could be generated from stem cells by spontaneous differentiation, coculture, treatment of the defined factors, or cell reprogramming. In this review, we summarize molecular and structural characteristics of RPE cells and discuss RPE-impairment, RPE-related diseases that will be amenable to cell replacement strategies and several stem cell sources to produce RPE in vitro.
내부쉴드 구조에 따른 컴팩트한 폴리머 부싱 설계에 관한 연구

This paper describes a study on the design of compact polymer bushing with inner control shield. In the bushing, a high electric stress occurred between field shaper and central conductor by the closely space. Also coaxial cylindrical shield has a great height along the axis to control an electric field. Consequently, all the potentials are raised axially along the field shaper and electric stress is concentrated on a part of the surface of the FRP tube near the upper end of the field shaper. In accordance, the field control can be achieved by means of the designs of such inner control shields. The floating and ring shield designs was decreased electric field concentration at critical parts of the bushing. The shield gaps is formed between field shaper and ring shield. Accordance equipotential lines extend through gaps. As a result, the resulting electrical stress are thus reduced in the range $17{\sim}23%$ in the bushing with floating and ring shield designs. Maxwell 2D simulator based on the boundary element method was also introduced in order to verify the reliability of the polymer bushing. The optimized design uses internal elements for electric stress grading at critical parts of the bushing.

The electrical and dielectric stability of zinc oxide-based varistors were investigated with the cobalt oxide contents in the range of $0.5\~5.0 mo\l%$. As cobalt oxide contents increased, the ceramic density increased in the range of $5.25\~5.55g/cm^3$ and the varistor voltage decreased in the range of $235.3\~86.0V$. The varistor with on addition of cobalt oxide $1.0 mol\%$ exhibited good nonlinearity. in which the nonlinear exponent is 66.6 and the leakage current is $1.2{\mu}A$. Furthermore, the varistors exhibited the highest electrical and dielectric stability, with $\%{\Delta}V_{1mA}=-1.9\%,\;\%{\Delta}{\alpha}=-10.5\%,\;\%{\Delta}I_L=+275.0\%,\;and\;\%{\Delta}tna{\delta}=+55.6\%$, under DC accelerated aging $0.95V_{1mA}/150^{\circ}C/24h$.
