한국인 EFL 학습자의 영어 재귀사 해석에 미치는 화용정보의 영향
유기윤(Yoo Ki Yun),김수연(Kim Soo Yeon) 한국영어학학회 2016 영어학연구 Vol.22 No.3
This article investigates differences in interpretations of English reflexives between Korean EFL speakers and English native speakers in terms of the c-command constraint. We examine whether Korean EFL learners selection of a non-c-commanding NP as an antecedent for an English reflexive is caused by L1 transfer or induced by different processing strategies between a mother tongue and a foreign language. The results show that, during the initial processing period, Korean EFL learners employ different strategies from English natives’ to resolve the interpretation of reflexives: EFL learners are reacting to pragmatic factors, while English native speakers are relying on syntactic factors at the initial stage of processing. This result supports the Shallow Structure Hypothesis of Clahsen and Felser(2006) in that during the first stage of parsing in a timed task, proficient EFL speakers interpret English reflexives according to the contextual information when biased sentences are given.

This study investigates whether KFL(Korean as a Foreign Language) learners’ heritage languages can affect their interpretations of a Korean reflexive, caki, with respect to the c-commanding requirement of the antecedent, especially when caki appears in a context in which a non c-commanding antecedent is favored by pragmatic factors. We compared the interpretations of the Korean control group with those of three different native English speaker KFL groups: Korean heritage group, Chinese heritage group, and English speakers without any heritage background. Different levels of sensitivity to pragmatic factors among the KFL groups indicate that heritage languages have an influence on L2 acquisition. Korean heritage speakers have the highest level of sensitivity to pragmatic manipulation. The sensitivity of Chinese heritage speakers to the pragmatic factors was higher than that of English speakers without any heritage language but lower than that of Korean heritage speakers.
Defeasibility of Syntactic Judgments in Korean EFL Learners’ Reflexive Resolution
Sungsoo Ok(옥성수),Ki-Yun Yoo(유기윤),Soo-Yeon Kim(김수연) 언어과학회 2019 언어과학연구 Vol.0 No.89
This study investigates whether L2 learners, who seem to reach the target grammar as far as syntactic requirements are concerned, can maintain their native-like judgments under the pragmatically manipulated context. The study compares results of the two experiments of reflexive resolution which differ in the presence of time pressure. Both indicate L2 learners’ general tendency to rely on non-syntactic cues in L2 processing, regardless of time pressure. Our findings, namely, that pragmatic cues control not only the early stage processing of the learners but also the learners’ ultimate choices, give support to the retrieval interference in the cue-based model (Cunnings 2017) over the shallow structure hypothesis in L2 processing (Clahsen and Felser 2006, 2018).
