        Insulation Design Standards for Protection of Power System against Lightning in Korea Electric Power Corporation

        As it has been reported that more than 60% of transmission line faults occurs due to lightning strokes, lighting is one of concerned issues in electric power utility company. Most of transmission line is double circuit in Korea. Double circuit outages account for 33.7 percent of total lightning faults from 1996 to 2004. Even though transmission fault might be cleared shortly by protective system, it could deteriorate the power quality accompanied with sag or flicker. Moreover, double circuit fault may lead to more aggravated situation, for instance, blackout. To protect transmission lines from lightning stroke, reduction of tower footing resistance, multiple ground wires and unbalanced insulation in double circuit lines have been adopted. In this paper, we would like to introduce insulation design standards for lightning protection of Korea Electric Power Corporation.

        미국 철도화물운송시장의 구조변화 분석

        After the establishment of the ‘Staggers Rail Act of 1980’, which established an atmosphere of free competition in the rail freight transportation market, freight railway in America became larger and the proportion of freight railway in the market increased. In 2008, it took up 43% of the transportation market based on ton/mile unit and the productivity of freight rail increased. On the other hand, in the case of Korea, the competing atmosphere is being set up under the influences of the renovation of the rail transportation industry in 2004. However, to make the rail transportation market more active and become more advanced, a lot of effort is required to build a stronger foundation for a free competition atmosphere. In this paper, we have deducted the political implications on the establishment of strengthened competition in Korean rail transportation industry from reviewing what kind of changes the rail transportation market in America went through and how it was developed. In this case, we have focused on the changes in industrial trends towards the restriction policy. Also influences of the deregulation policy after 1980 on the enhanced market efficiency were reviewed.

        녹색무역 기반 강화를 위한 철도 인터모달 로지스틱스 시스템 구축에 관한 검토

        A series of environmental issues have been raised in the field of logistics recently, as well. In South Korea, attention has been focused on the establishment of an intermodal logistics system from the perspectives of environment and logistic efficiency as a countermeasure against them. This study reviewed overall tasks to build an intermodal logistics system for the South Korean railroad by examining the case of the United States, which has invested efforts into the establishment of an environment-friendly and efficient intermodal logistics system through intermodal transportation promotion policies such as ISTEA, NHS, and TEA-21, utilization of ITS and ICT, and expansion of intermodal railroad transportation. There are several tasks to fulfill in order to establish an intermodal logistics system for the South Korean railroad: first, the legal institutions should be arranged to enable intermodal transportation business including railroad transportation; second, plans should be set up to arrange the corridors connecting the railroad terminals with the truck terminals and secure necessary funds over a long period of time; third, there is a need to increase the competitive edge of service by offering cargo tracking and security information incorporated into ITS and ICT; finally, it is also required to build an intermodal network to allow the South Korean railroad terminals to connect to the inland areas of Japan and China in preparation of FTA among Korea, China, and Japan.

        Lightning induced faults accounts for more than 66% at the transmission lines of KEPCO. The lightning causes damages to power system equipments including transmission line, the shut down of electricity and the electro-magnetic interference. Because of this reason. we need the real time lightning information for the optimal operation of power system. And, it is required to obtain and accumulate the lightning current parameters for the insulation design. A lightning detection system, LPATS, has been operated since 1995 in KEPCO. For the improved detection efficiency, we had in stalled the new lightning detection network named as KLDNet in 2005. Also, we had developed the new software for the lightning parameters analysis and real time information service on the WEB. In this paper. we would like to introduce about the new system.

        화주 · 국제물류업체의 친환경수송에 대한 인식평가와 시사점

        Based on the fact that shippers’ intent also plays an important role in the selection of means of transportation and the systematization of logistics, this study examined possibilities of modal shift to railroad through shippers’ and multimodal transporters’ evaluation and analysis of eco-friendly transportation. According to the examination above, it was confirmed that eco-friendly transportation by domestic shippers and multimodal transporters are conducted, in many cases, by railroad-specialized multimodal transporters with revenue of 500 billion Won and more container use of 5,000 TEU and non-railroad-using shippers with transport volume of certain amount, the customer base with high regard for importance of eco-friendly transportation whether or not they are currently using railroad transportation, from a tactical perspective. For future modal shift to railroad transportation, above all, it is necessary to promote conversion to railroad transportation from a strategic perspective through building an alliance among shippers, railroad-specialized multimodal transporters and KORAIL, accompanied by an upgrading of the role of KORAIL.

        Big Data Creation Process and Measures for Utilization: Focusing on the Transportation Sector

        Transportation big data is not limited to the transportation sector, but is a useful resource that will bring innovation to all aspects of our lives in the future, and various R&D for its utilization is currently in progress. However, the current level of utilization of transportation big data is very limited under the existing legal system. In this study, we will investigate the meaning and problems of the use of big data in the transportation sector, and investigate the improvement tasks to expand the use of big data. Research Design, Data and Methodology: The paper used a qualitative research methodology through the literature review. In this study, first, the definition and creation process of big data were studied. Second, the significance and problems of applying big data in the transportation sector were studied. Finally, the current status of research in the transportation sector using big data was investigated, and the tasks to be improved in the process from collecting transportation big data to analysis were reviewed. Results: Big data means creating new value by fusing data collected from different purposes. In the case of using big data, the transportation sector can establish more accurate and detailed transportation policies in basic data investigation, identification of phenomena, and prediction. In order to expand the use of big data, it is important to consider who owns it, what it was collected for, what the format of the collected data is, and what should be done to use it. Conclusion: Big data is a derivative thing, but it is becoming important enough to determine the success or failure of a country depending on how it is used. However, problems such as data errors or invasion of privacy that may occur when using big data are expected. This is not just a problem in the transportation sector. When using big data, there are many problems to be solved, such as data ownership, Big Brother problems, and the implementation of smart mobility. If the advent of the big data era is taken for granted, the task from now on is how to solve these problems and share their values.

      • 우리나라 철도컨테이너화물 수송서비스 평가와 모달시프트 가능성에 관한 검토

        본 연구는 화물수송을 둘러싼 사회적 · 경제적 환경변화 속에서 철도물류의 활성화가 시대적 과제가 되고 있는 시점에서 철도로의 모달시프트가 기대되는 철도컨테이너수송에 주목하여 화주, 복합운송업체, 운영자를 대상으로 설문조사를 실시, 철도의 이용현황, 이용확대를 위한 개선사항, 환경문제에 대한 대응상황을 분석함으로써 철도물류서비스의 생산성 향상을 위한 개선방안, 나아가 국가정책과의 공동보조를 통한 철도화물수송으로의 모달시프트 가능성에 대하여 검토하였다. The purpose of this study is to search how to improvement methods of rail freight by understanding the problems and the evasion reasons in coping with various case of logistics environment and to enhance competitiveness of rail freight. So we examined improvement of in the productivity in the rail container transport, and possibility for Modal shift in Korea railway, we have done a survey among the shiffer and multimodal transport operators in Korea. Data were analyzed using quantitiative mathod.
