Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify social support networks for each life-cycle stage of adults. Method: A total of 1,047 subjects included 454 young adults, 262 middle-aged adults and 331 senior adults. Data were collected using Oh’s Korean Version Norbeck’s Social Support Questionnaire (NSSQ), and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, and ANOVA. Result: For the young adults, parents were the top and second priority as important social support resources, the third was siblings, and then friends. For the middle-aged, spouse was the first priority as an important social support resource, while the second and the third were children. For the senior adults, children ranked from the top to the seventh priority. The mean number of social support resources was 13.23 for the young adult, 12.93 for the middle-aged and 5.30 for the senior adults. Social support networks of the young adults significantly differed according to gender and marital status. That of the middle-aged significantly differed according to family size. In addition, that of the senior adults was significantly different according to marital status, economic status, religion and family size. Conclusion: It is essential to consider social support networks for each life-cycle stage of adults when making a social support intervention program.

Peplau was one of the first nursing theorists who developed the theory of interpersonal relations. She was born in 1909 in Pensilvania, USA and graduated from the nursing school at Portstown hospital, obtained her master`s degree in psychology at Banington University in 1943, followed by master`s degree in mental health nursing from the college of education at Columbia university in 1947, and in PhD in nursing in 1953. The clinical practice of Peplau includes US army, private hospital, general hospital, along with nursing research and education, and she opened her clinic for mental health nursing. She published Interpersonal Relations in Nursing in 1952, in which she clearly identified nursing phenomena related to interpersonal relations between nurse and patients from the perspectives of clinical practice, research, and education. The theoretical background of Peplau was influenced by Sullivan, and the Peplau`s theory was based on literature reviews on behavioral science, and theories of Sigmund Freud, Erich Fromm, Abraham Maslow, and Neal Miller. At the beginning of her theoretical building, she integrated her theory into psychoanalysis, social learning theory, human motivation theory, and human development theory. Through her publication, she emphasized that the major concern of nursing theory should on promoting nursing practice, on which her theory on interpersonal relations between nurse and patients was based to develop therapeutic interpersonal relations to promote individual health. Peplau`s theory contributes to establish nursing professionalism which improve nursing practice by expanding body of nursing knowledge. She has served the president of American Nurses Association (1970-1972), consultant of World Health Organization, and numerous publications to develop nursing professionalism until her retirement in 1974. Her theory was utilized to establish the concepts of mental health nursing. Not only for mental health nursing area, however, nursing practice is based on interpersonal relations between nurse and patients, her theory should be able to apply to in most, if not all, areas. This paper is to introduce Peplau`s theory of nursing and its utilization in nursing practice through literature review.

Purpose: This study was designed to examine the effects of horticultural therapy program on state-anxiety, fatigue and quality of life (QoL) of among women cancer survivors. Methods: Quasi-experimental study was used with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Data were collected from February to June, 2009. Participants consisted of 40 women cancer survivors in community. The experimental group participated in horticultural therapy program once a week for 18 weeks. Data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN 18.0 program using χ²-test and t-test. Results: There were significant differences between the two groups in state-anxiety and QoL. Conclusion: The results of this study support that horticultural therapy program was effective in decreasing state-anxiety and improving QoL among women cancer survivors.
