A series of fluorescent phthalimidylhydrazone disperse dyes based on pyrrolinone esters were synthesized andcharacterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy,and elemental analysis. The synthesized dyes were confirmed to be keto-hydrazone tautomers and were found to be mixturesof Z/E isomers, with the Z form being predominant, via 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Although the effect of N-alkylation inphthalimide on the absorption spectra and color properties of the dyed poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was negligible,dyes that contained a longer N-alkyl substituent achieved higher color yields on the PET fabrics, owing to their increasedhydrophobicity. The synthesized dyes exhibited a reasonably intense fluorescence in the solution state, with a quantum yieldof 0.109-0.122, as well as in the dyed fabric. The phthalimidylhydrazone disperse dyes exhibited excellent color fastness aftera mild alkaline treatment instead of the conventional reduction clearing, which causes environmental problems due to thehigh biochemical oxygen demand and alkalinity in dyehouse effluents.

Herein, two spironaphthoxazine-based photochromic dyes are synthesized and their dyeing, fastness, and photochromicproperties on nylon fabric are investigated. A novel performance indicator, the photochromic efficiency index (PEI), is proposedto assess the photochromic performance of the synthesized spironaphthoxazine dyes. Using the PEI, the parametersaffecting dyeability and photochromic performance are optimized for efficient photochromic performance, and a pH of 9and temperature range of 80–90 °C are determined as the optimal dyeing conditions. Evidently, 1,4-diazabicyclo [2.2.2]octane improves photocoloration efficiency by inhibiting thermal oxidative degradation via singlet oxygen quenching. Thedye containing a hydroxyl group achieves higher buildup and photochromic performance on the nylon fabric owing to itsincreased affinity in terms of polarity and hydrophilicity. The synthesized dyes exhibit reasonable buildup and photocolorationproperties on nylon fabric, in addition to excellent color fastness to washing, rubbing, and perspiration.

Two uracil-based antimicrobial azo disperse dyes were synthesized using 6- aminouracil and 6-amino-1,3-dimethyluracil as diazo components, and they were incorporated to the backbone of polyurethane to synthesize antimicrobial polyurethane. The chemical structures of the synthesized dyes and polyurethanes were confirmed through FT-IR and 1H-NMR analysis, and their molecular weight, contact angle and thermal degradation were examined using GPC, TGA, contact angle measurement device, respectively. The fibrous membrane structure of the electro-spun polyurethane membranes were confirmed by FE-SEM, and their antibacterial test results showed excellent antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. However, the color intensity of polyurethane containing a uracilazo dye moiety in its backbone was found to be poor due to its inherently low molar absorption coefficient.

Sulfadiazine, an antibacterial agent, was used in combination with the differentcoupling components to synthesize three sulfadiazine-based azo disperse dyes with antibacterialproperties. The chemical structures of the synthesized dye were verifiedusing FT-IR spectroscopy and 1H-NMR analysis, and the spectral properties of the dyeswere analyzed using a UV-Visible spectrophotometer. Among the synthesized azo dispersiondyes, the more hydrophobic dye exhibited superior build-up properties on PET fabrics. The colorfastness of PET fabrics dyed with the synthesized dyes showed excellent colorfastness to washing, perspiration, and rubbing. An analysis of the antibacterial propertiesof S. aureus and K. pneumoniae revealed that there was no significant antibacterial activitycompared to that of undyed PET. However, a dyeing with a higher concentration of a particulardye produced an increase in antimicrobial properties.
