Vol.56 No.-

On the assumption that, in the contemporary society that emphasizes external body type, dancers` restrained eating and eating disorder would have an effect on their self-esteem, the present study surveyed 225 university dancers in order to analyze their psychological state caused by restrained eating and eating disorder and to provide basic data for health management. From the results of this study were drawn conclusions as follows. First, significant correlation was observed between dancers` restrained eating and eating disorder, and between their eating disorder and negative self-esteem. Second, dancers` restrained eating was found to be a variable explaining 16.6% of their eating disorder. Third, dancers` restrained eating was found not to have a significant effect on their self-esteem. Fourth, the sub-factors of dancers` eating disorder self-abasement and anorexia nervosa were found to be variables explaining 44.8% of the dancers` negative self-esteem. Dancers` restrained eating and eating disorder, which are inevitable for maintaining their body type, were affecting their self-esteem negatively in a vicious cycle. As dancers` negative self-esteem may develop into emotional problems such as lack of confidence in front of audience and others and stage anxiety, there should be scientific guidelines for dancers` body type management and eating habits.

Vol.51 No.-

The present study surveyed 464 middle aged women who were participating in life dances in order to analyze differences in social support and participation satisfaction according to the state of participation and the relation between social support and participation satisfaction and ultimately to obtain basic materials for expanding middle aged women`s opportunities for and accessibility to life dances. Conclusions drawn from this study are as follows. First, in the results of ANCOVA on social support according to the state of participation using personal characteristics as covariants, social support was significantly high when the place was a sports center and when the monthly fee was over 50,000 won, but did not show any significant difference according to the quality of facility. Second, in the results of ANCOVA on participation satisfaction according to the state of participation using personal characteristics as covariants, satisfaction was significantly high when the place was a women`s center or a sports center, when the quality of facility was satisfactory and when the monthly fee was 10,000~30,000 won. Third, in the results of multiple regression analysis on participation satisfaction using the sub factors of social support - evaluative support, self-esteem support and belonging support - as intervening variables, social support explained 40.2% of participation satisfaction. In their old age, people`s happiness can be found in satisfying their desires for social relation and the value of their existence. In this sense, life dance is highly valuable leisure culture mentally, physically and socially. Particularly as a leisure activity creating aesthetic value of art through bodily motions, it is recommendable to women in middle or old age in order to strengthen their confidence through the practice of aesthetic expression and to enhance their sense of well being and social support.

Vol.49 No.-

In order to analyze the relationship between stress and dancing performance according to dancers` injuries, this study has carried out a survey with university students majoring in traditional Korean dance (91), ballet (91), and modern dance (95) as its subjects. The results of this study are as follows. First, as for experience of injuries by major, the most frequent situation where an injury occurs is the private practice, and class and performance follow it. As for main factors of injuries, the personal factor is the most frequent in traditional Korean dance, the technical factor and the personal factor in ballet, and the technical factor in modern dance. Second, as for frequently injured body parts by major, traditional Korean dance has the neck, the coccyx, the patella, the nervous sense paralysis, cramps in muscles, and bruised muscles as the most frequent injuries. Blisters, ripped off toenails, and Achilles` tendon damages are the most frequent injuries in Ballet, and thighbone damages and abrasions in modern dance. Third, the more experience with injuries a dancer, the higher stress has. Fourth, due to stress by dance injuries, dancers feel weary most frequently, and weakened will and a sense of burdening next most frequently. Through this study, we can realize that stress most greatly builds up when a dancer is injured, which causes to feel weary in dance performance. Thus, a dancer should always limber up before practicing in order not to be injured, and it is important for dancer to try to put himself at ease in order not to be stressed. Much research should be done on obviation of dancers` injuries.

Vol.16 No.-

The objective of the present study was to examine the relation between dancers' body shape perception and their self-esteem and to provide basic materials for managing dancers' psychological state and body shape. For this purpose, we surveyed 225 dancers and drew conclusions as follows. First, as to body shape perception by major, physical perception, one of the sub-factors of body shape perception, was higher in those majoring in contemporary dance than in those majoring in Korean dance or ballet, but the difference was not significant. Second, another sub-factor social perception was significantly higher in those majoring in Korean dance or ballet than in those majoring in contemporary dance. Third, as to self-esteem by major, self-esteem was significantly higher in those majoring in Korean dance than in those majoring in ballet or contemporary dance. Fourth, when regression analysis was made on the relation between the sub-factors (physical perception and social perception) of dancers' body shape perception and their self-esteem, social perception was found to be a significant variable explaining 7% of the variation of self-esteem.

Vol.56 No.-

The objective of the present study was to survey dancers` awareness of audience, and their state anxiety according to the awareness, and by doing so, to obtain data for improving the communication and the effect of dancers` performances. For this study, we surveyed and analyzed state anxiety according to audience awareness in 255 dancers including 108 students majoring in Korean dance, 72 in ballet, and 75 in contemporary dance, and drew conclusions as follows. First, as to audience awareness and state anxiety according to personal characteristics, audience awareness according to major was higher in students majoring in ballet but the difference was not significant. On the other hand, state anxiety was significantly higher in students majoring in contemporary dance, followed by Korean dance and ballet. According to school year, audience awareness was highest in sophomores but the difference was not significant. State anxiety was highest in sophomores, followed by freshmen, seniors, juniors and graduate students, and the difference was significant. According to the frequency of performances, audience awareness was significantly higher in students performing once a month, followed by once in every six months, once a week, and once a year. On the other hand, state anxiety was high in students performing once a week, but the difference was not significant. Second, in the results of correlation and multiple regression analysis on audience awareness and state anxiety, audience awareness showed a significant correlation with state anxiety. As to state anxiety according to the sub-factors of audience awareness, the "dancer-centered" factor of audience awareness had a significant effect on strain and overstrain of state anxiety, and the "conversation with audience" factor of audience awareness had a significant effect on arousal and strain of state anxiety. As presented above, dancers` audience awareness worked regardless of major and school year, but was very passive without flow and interaction with audience, and dancer-centered performance had an effect on dancers` state anxiety. Therefore, it is necessary to provide dance students with opportunities to attune themselves and interact with audience at least once a month even at a small theater so that they resolve anxiety about the stage and develop flow and confidence in performance. Furthermore, it is required to survey dance performers` perception on audience in order to get information for enhancing the quality of dance performances, developing art performances recognizing audience`s potential, and providing important socio-cultural materials.
