A computer simulation program based on the finite element method was developed in order to calculate the potential and current density distribution for the electrodes in a Ni-Fe battery, through which the depth of discharge(DOD) distribution and variation with time could be predicted. The analysis on the electrodes of different aspect ratios and tab positions revealed that the aspect ratio and the tab position influence the potential and current density distribution, thus affecting the DOD distribution within the electrode. As a result, it was found that an optimization for the design of an electrode shape is necessary to make the DOD distribution more uniform and to enhance the utility of the active material of an electrode influencing the cycle life of a battery.

Pressure swing adsorption process for oxygen production from air was studied by numerical simulation to estimate product purity, recovery, and productivity. At a fixed feed rate, maximum purity exists. In case of large feed velocity and pressure ratio, purity increases, then decreases as purge-to-feed ratio increases. Feasible region could be found in a figure showing recovery versus purity with fixed pressure ratio. From this figure, maximum recovery could be obtained for a given purity. Maximum productivity for a given purity was obtained at different operating conditions. As pressure ratio increases above 5, recovery hardly changes and productivity increases considerably.

Thermal characteristics of optical recording media were investigated using the finite element method when a laser beam with a Gaussian distribution was incident on it. For a stationary media, it was found that the maximum temperature increased with increasing laser power and decreasing film thickness. Thermal equilibrium state was reached in 100 ns after the laser was turned on. In addition, in the recording media moving with a constant linear velocity, it was possible to predict the formation of teardrop-shaped pit.

본 연구에서는 감손우라늄칩을 처리하기 전의 시험단계로서 감손우라늄칩의 산화처리시 발생되는 산화열에 의한 산화장치 내부의 온도상승 및 외부로의 열전달을 해석하기 위해 산화장치 내부에 히터를 설치하여 실험을 수행하였다. 히터의 발생열량을 달리하면서 시간에 따른 열전달 특성을 알아내기 위하여 열유속, Nusselt 수, Grashof수와 Rayleigh 수를 구하고, Nusselt 수와 Rayleigh 수의 관계를 구하였다. An experimental study was conducted on the natural convection heat transfer with a heat source (heater) in a top-vented cylindrical enclosure. Using an Air Controlled Oxidizer (ACO) for treatment of depleted uranium chips, the heat transfer characteristics of the ACO was studied with various heat generation. Heat flux, Nusselt number, Grashof number and Rayleigh number were obtained and the relation between Nusselt number and Rayleigh number was derived.
