Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare anxiety, depression and quality of life according to the severity of urinary incontinence in married women. Method: The participants were 168 married women aged 30-65 years who experienced urinary incontinence. The data were collected from May to July, 2006 using a structured questionnaire. Frequencies, percent, means and standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, X²-test and Scheffe test with SPSS win 14.0 program were used to analyze the data. Results: The distribution of urinary incontinence severity was mild 87.5%, or moderate 12.5%. Significant differences in the severity of urinary incontinence were found for the general characteristics of age, education level, having a job and having a spouse and for the obstetric characteristics of type of delivery, and menopause. Differences in the score for anxiety (t=-2.41, p=0.001) and quality of life (t=5.50, p<0.001) according to the severity of urinary incontinence were statistically significant. Conclusion: Women with moderate to severe urinary incontinence should be screened for psychosocial factors. Severity of urinary incontinence in married women negatively affects their quality of life. Further research is needed to determine factors predicting the quality of life for incontinent women.

A microfluidic method for the in situ production of monodispersed alginate hydrogels using biocompatiblepolymer gelation by crosslinker mass transfer is described. Gelation of the hydrogel was achieved in situ by the dispersedcalcium ion in the microfluidic device. The capillary number (Ca) and the flow rate of the disperse phase whichare important operating parameters mainly influenced the formation of three distinctive flow regions, such as dripping,jetting, and unstable dripping. Under the formation of dripping region, monodispersed alginate hydrogels having a narrowsize distribution (C.V=2.71%) were produced in the microfluidic device and the size of the hydrogels, ranging from30 to 60 μm, could be easily controlled by varying the flow rate, viscosity, and interfacial tension. This simple microfluidicmethod for the production of monodisperse alginate hydrogels shows strong potential for use in delivery systemsof foods, cosmetics, inks, and drugs, and spherical alginate hydrogels which have biocompatibility will be applied to celltransplantation.

The Korean Thyroid Association (KTA) is a multi-disciplinary organization founded by various Korean societies involved in thyroid disease. The KTA has become a foundation stone of the rapid development of the thyroidology in Korea by utilizing the characteristic of multi-discipline for the past 10 years. On February 16, 2008, the inaugural conference was held with great success. Since then, in a short period of 10 years, the number of lifetime members of the KTA reached 623. On March 29, 2012, the KTA became an approved organization by Korean Medical Association within the record time of 4 years after its establishment. In terms of patient care, mutual cooperation among experts in the various fields of thyroid disease have been promoted based on the KTA. On the academic side, the number of papers were awarded and published at international conferences or international academic journals has increased dramatically, and finally, the research on thyroid disease in Korea has reached the global level. The KTA is a multi-disciplinary society consisting of experts from various fields such as internal medicine, surgery, otolaryngology, nuclear medicine, radiology, and pathology. The reason why the KTA has achieved unparalleled growth is that all the KTA members, including senior professors who served as the president and vice president, and incumbent executives, have been harmonized and developed together. Here, we review the activities of the KTA for 10 years from its establishment, and present the future direction of the KTA.

A research for the environmental protection in the natural science campus of Sung Kyun Kwan University which is located at Chun-Chun Dong in Suweon city had been proceeded from June 1982 to September 1983. The actual conditions of the water quality of I1-wol reservoir in front of natural science campus and several places in and nearby the campus were surveyed. Judging from this survey, it was found that the water quality of I1-wol reservoir was suitable for agricultural use without any trouble. However, seasonal fluctuation in the concentration of anions and cations in water was found. Even though the concentration of some cations such as chloride and sulfate did not reach the level of WHO for water or allowable limit of our national water works it shows much higher value than that in all of natural rivers and clean lakes in our country. On the other hand, the number of E. coli in the water of I1-wol reservoir was seasonally fluctuated, that is, a large number was counted in summer and a small number in winter. The average number of E. coli in this water was less than 3,000 per ml all the year round. Therefore, it is regarded as a suitable water for irrigation. The waste water was treated with FeSO₄ or Fe₂(SO₄)₃ㆍ xH₂O in order to eliminate heavy metals such as Hg and Cd dissolved in it. After the ratio of Fe^++ to OH^- in the water was adjusted to 1 : 1.5 by NaOH and then aeration was followed most Cd and Hg ions were eliminated by precipitation. 14 organic substances were detected from the water in the waste water reservoir tank and some of them were easily removed by aeration.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the patient's perception of the nurse's behavior in protecting patient privacy and to make suggestions for medical facilities to increase protection of patient privacy. Method: The research was a survey study. The data on protection of privacy in primary nursing, for physical privacy, of patient information and in private conversations were collected in October 2005 from 187 patients in a university hospital. Frequencies, means, t-test, ANOVA, and x²-test were used to analyze the data. The SPSS 13.0 for Windows program was used. Results: The mean score for patients' perception of nurse protection of their privacy was 3.33. There were significant differences in perception of protecting patients' privacy according to gender for private conversation, according to level of education for all but physical nursing and for number of admissions for total score and for primary nursing. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest the following: a) Institutional polices and nursing guideline should be clearly stated as to the nurses' duty to protect patient privacy. b) Medical facilities should be arranged in a way that allows for the protection of patients' medical information, and should focus on patient privacy. c) It is necessary of nurses to receive periodic in-service education on protecting patient privacy.
