Vol.37 No.2

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the use of movies as part of a liberal English curriculum at the university level. Movies and their scripts are valuable learning tools in the university English classroom. The use of movies in the university English curriculum has six merits. These merits include the increase of students’ learning interest, the improvement of students’ listening ability, students’ absorption of idiomatic expressions, the possibility of role play, the students’ unique exposure to and understanding of native English speakers’ culture, and liberal education. In this study, I focus on the liberal English curriculum at S University. I suggest a lesson procedure. It is about Screen English. The main feature of the procedure about Screen English is the use of four language skills, while focusing on listening and speaking. I have analyzed students’ learning interest and their response when I taught English using my lesson procedure. I conducted the main experimental study on each class of the lecture. Above all, my results have shown that it is more effective to use movies to teach English. In conclusion, the use of movies in a university-level English curriculum provides a unique and valuable linguistic experience, as well as liberal education for students. (Shingu University)

Vol.59 No.-

This study aims to analyze Melissa Broder’s So Sad Today: Personal Essays and the Grimm brothers’ fairy tale Clever Elsie to understand women’s disregard of their bodies. In chapter 2, I analyze the two texts and identify four common features associated with women’s disregard of their bodies: ① lack of acceptance, ② excessive anxiety, ③ the body’s surrender for the relationship, ④ the body’s resist. In the chapter 3, I devised a literary therapy method to help individuals heal their relationship with their body. A literary therapist can help a person focus on their body’s reaction to literature and make them reflect on their story-in-depth to resolve inner difficulties concerning the body. Literary therapists can deeply understand and accept the individual’s negative story-in-depth, and use this understanding to individual integrate their spirit and body.

21 Vol.23 No.2

Feminist drama is the play by women, for women, of women. Feminist playwrights make the play out of women`s ordinary experience in order that people can easily feel the female oppression. In feminist drama, women attempt to free themselves from their subordinate status in the patriarchal society, thus allowing them to seek their identity outside of those confines. In the second chapter, I studied roots and the background of feminist drama. Living Theatre, Off-Off-Broadway Group, Resident Theatres, Radical Theatre and Open Theatre have much effect on birth of feminist drama. In the third chapter, there are several characteristics in feminist drama, that is, the pursuit of female identity, the absence of men, the bonding of women, collective scripting and improvisation, the mother-daughter relationship, naming, transformation and domestic interior settings. These are presented in many plays. In conclusion, feminist drama focuses on the process of achieving female autonomous self with eight characteristics.

Vol.31 No.4

This study aims at integrating personality education into primary English literacy instruction using children’s literature and collaborative activities. Twenty-five sixth grade English learners participated in the study. Two research questions were set up: 1) What aspects are shown in the literacy development of the participants through collaborative activities based on literary texts? 2) What are some effects of personality education using the contents of literary texts and collaborative learning? To find the answers to these questions, most data were collected from various sources and then analyzed qualitatively. Additionally, students’ moral development was analyzed quantitatively using the Learning Strategy Test and Child Problem Behavior Screening Questionnaire. The first finding demonstrated that literary texts and collaborative activities helped students improve their writing abilities. The second finding showed the possibility of integrating personality education into primary English instructions. For example, students reacted more sensitively to moral issues, understood the need to take care of others, and learned individual and social responsibilities. Based on the results, implications and suggestions are provided.

(STEM journal) Vol.17 No.3

Mamma Mia has captured the world’s attention through not only the popularity of the musical, but the movie version as well. This work encapsulates the mother-daughter relationship in a comedic environment while incorporating the songs of ABBA. While some features and themes of the work have similar characteristics with existing feminist dramas, there are others that are new: first, is the idea of women seeking an identity; second, is change of the absence of male figures; third, is the acknowledgement of women’s bonds; and fourth, is the musical element. The bond between women and the foundation of women seeking an identity is similar to features of existing feminist dramas. In previous feminist dramas, the presence of males often denotes a negative aspect; however, this work deviates from the norm by having males provide a positive presence. Lastly, the musical elements provide a component different than those of traditional feminist dramas; the music provides a novel method to construct and tell a story, and can be thought of as an innovative voice for feminist dramas. Mamma Mia, as a musical film, is one of the best movies to get the audience to sing, dance, and enjoy the story, all at the same time.

The purpose of this paper is to suggest an effective teaching method of Shakespeare``s works. The study targets 39 students who took the English Literature Studies as a liberal subject. I focused on how to effectively teach Shakespeare``s works through learning contents. First, I applied a communicative teaching method to convey moral values and wisdom of life. Second, I used movies, the reading of main scenes in English, and the reading of a translated version. Third, I applied a part of PBL (Problem-Based Learning) strategies to make a group presentation. I have analyzed the students`` personal characteristics and their response when I taught Shakespeare``s works using my lesson procedure. I conducted the main experimental study on one class of the lecture. Above all, my results have shown that it is a more effective teaching method. The aim of a lesson is to make students easily understand the subject and remain interested. The results of this study show high satisfaction of managing a method of class, watching movies, reading translated versions, using a chronological table, and making a group presentation and group discussion.
