        Development of S-Methylmethionine Sulfonium Derivatives and Their Skin-Protective Effect against Ultraviolet Exposure

        In a previous study, we have demonstrated that S-methylmethionine sulfonium (SMMS) confers wound-healing and photoprotective effects on the skin, suggesting that SMMS can be used as a cosmetic raw material. However, it has an unpleasant odor. Therefore, in the present study, we synthesized odor-free SMMS derivatives by eliminating dimethyl sulfide, which is the cause of the unpleasant odor and identified two derivatives that exhibited skin-protective effects: one derivative comprised (2S,4S)- and (2R,4S)-2-phenylthiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid and the other comprised (2S,4R)-, (2S,4S)-, (2R,4R)-, and (2R,4S)-2-phenyl-1,3- thiazinane-4-carboxylic acid. We performed in vitro proliferation assays using human dermal fibroblasts (hDFs) and an immortalized human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT). The two SMMS derivatives were shown to increase hDF and HaCaT cell proliferation as well as improve their survival by protecting against ultraviolet exposure. Moreover, the derivatives regulated the expression of collagen type I and MMP mRNAs against ultraviolet exposure in hDFs, suggesting that these derivatives can be developed as cosmetic raw materials.

        여학생의 운동장 캠핑 수업 실천에 관한 사례연구

        본 연구의 목적은 중학교 여학생의 체육수업 활성화와 프로그램의 다양화 측면에서 캠핑 수업이라는 주제를 선정했다. 구체적으로 중학교 여학생의 캠핑 수업의 실천 과정을 제시하고 학교현장에서 효율적 운영에 필요한 시사점을 제시하고자 한다. 이를 위한 연구방법으로는 사례연구 방법을 사용했다. 연구결과는 세 가지 범주로 구분했다. 첫째, ‘새로운 시작, 여학생 캠핑 수업’이다. 이는 미래중학교의 환경을 이해하고, 수업을 도입한 계기에 대한 내용이다. 둘째, ‘효과적 캠핑 수업 운영을 위한 전략’이다. 캠핑 수업의 시간과 공간을 효율적으로 사용하기 위한 과제 포스터, 루브릭의 구체적 정보를 재구성했다. 셋째, 여학생 캠핑 수업의 과정과 교사의 역할이다. 캠핑 수업의 과정을 구분하고, 교사를 ‘지휘자’, ‘학습 촉진자’로 비유하여 분석하고 해석했다. 종합하면, 여학생의 특성을 이해하고, 운동장 수업의 새로운 대안을 제시하는 데 시사점을 제공할 수 있다. 여학생을 위한 다양한 수업을 위한 후속연구를 제안하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 운동장 캠핑 수업에서 여학생의 경험을 탐색하는 연구가 진행되어야 한다. 둘째, 단위 학교 현장의 특수성을 고려해서 여학생을 위한 다양한 프로그램의 운영 사례를 탐색하는 연구가 수행되어야 한다. 셋째, 학교 현장에서 자연 친화적, 여가활동과 관련된 대안적 수업에 관한 연구가 필요하다. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine camping class in terms of promoting physical education classes for female students and diversifying physical activity programs. Specifically, It aims to present implementation process of middle school girls camping classes and suggestions for efficient operation at school sites. Methods: This study used a case study as a method of study. Results: The results of the study were divided into three categories. First, the introduction of camping classes for girl student is the alternation found in poor school sports facilities, the arousal girl student’s interest and the practice of leisure activities. Second, the task presentation and improvement of the learning assessment of camping classes were categorized as improvement of task posters for safety and efficiency and reconstruction of rubric for performance evaluation. Third, the roles of teachers and the meaning of girl student camping class were analyzed and interpreted as a teacher of waiting and supporting, as a camping class of sharing and consideration. Conclusion: First, in terms of diversification of physical education programs for female students, camping classes serve as a place to practice leisure activities. Second, it is the possibility of a collaborative class in which female students take the initiative. Third, camping was a class of achievement that showed tangible results. The suggestion is to study students' experiences in camping, to develop various programs for promoting female students physical education, and to develop a model for new camping classes.

        Mitochondria-Targeted Vitamin E Protects Skin from UVB-Irradiation

        Mitochondria-targeted vitamin E (MVE) is designed to accumulate within mitochondria and is applied to decrease mitochondrial oxidative damage. However, the protective effects of MVE in skin cells have not been identified. We investigated the protective effect of MVE against UVB in dermal fibroblasts and immortalized human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT). In addition, we studied the wound-healing effect of MVE in animal models. We found that MVE increased the proliferation and survival of fibroblasts at low concentration (i.e., nM ranges). In addition, MVE increased collagen production and downregulated matrix metalloproteinase1. MVE also increased the proliferation and survival of HaCaT cells. UVB increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in fibroblasts and HaCaT cells, while MVE decreased ROS production at low concentration. In an animal experiment, MVE accelerated wound healing from laser-induced skin damage. These results collectively suggest that low dose MVE protects skin from UVB irradiation. Therefore, MVE can be developed as a cosmetic raw material.
