The catalytic reduction of SO₂ to elemental sulfur with CO over Ce_(1-x)Zr_(x)O₂ was studied. The Ce_(10x)Zr_(x)O2 catalysts were prepared by changing the Ce/Zr mole ratio(x=1, 0.8, 0.2, 0). The reactivity of Ce_(1-x)Zr_(x)O₂ in accordance with experimental conditions, such as reaction temperature(400-450??), space velocity (GHSV: 10,000-70,000 h^(-1)) were investigated. The conversion of SO2 and the selectivity to elemental sulfur in the recovery of elemental sulfur from SO2 using Ce_(0.8)Zr_(0.4)O₂ and Ce_(0.5)Zr_(0.5)O₂ catalysts were respectively about 93% and 98% at temperature about 425 ??, which were superior to other catalysts. It seems that the reactivity is influenced by the Ce/Zr mole ratio. From these results, it was concluded that the oxygen mobility of catalysis was increased with inserting the Zr. Because the reduction of lattice oxygen and reoxidation of Ce-based catalysts was improved by the adding Zr, it is possible to improve the redox characteristic.

The effect of H₂O and coal gas on a direct sulfur recovery process using Ce_(1-x)Zr_(x)O₂ catalysts was investigated in this study. As the reducing power of reactants was lowered in the present of H₂O, the activity of catalysts decreased. Temperature programmed reduction experiments showed that a water gas shift reaction took place in the temperature range of this study and that the reduced catalyst was re-oxidized by H₂O. DSRP was carried out on Ce_(1-x)Zr_(x)O₂ catalysts using a coal gas as a reductant. Maximum 76.8% yield of elemental sulfur was obtained at 500℃ with a space velocity of 30,000㎖/g-cat·h and [CO+H₂]/[SO₂] ratio of 2.5. The side reaction by H₂O could be inhibited using a coal gas.

In this paper, we proposed the algorithm for locating destination address block (DAB) from automatic system to classify packages. For locating DAB, because the size of obtained images is are very large, we select the region of interesting (ROI) to reduce time carrying into algorithm. After selecting the ROI, proposed algorithm is carried out within the ROI. We extract the outline of the handwriting part of the DAB and the rest components within the obtained ROI using thresholding. We carry out labeling to extract each connected component for extracted outline and the rest components. We extract the outline of the handwriting part of the DAB using the geometrical characteristic of the outline of the handwriting part of the DAB among many connected components. The last, we extract the locating DAB using the outline of the handwriting part of the DAB.

Objective: For curative surgical treatment of esophageal cancer the resectability from the tracheobrochial tree would be the most important factor. Although CT scan has been used for the determination of the resectability of esophageal cancer, it has a limitation on the detection of esophageal cancer invasion to tracheobronchial tree We have performed flexible bronchoscopy in the patients with esophageal cancer to detect and classify the tracheobronchial tree alterations and to find the relation of bronchoscopic findings with the resectability. Method: From April 1990 to October 1992, 133 patients with esophageal cancer had received bronchoscopy. Bronchoscopic findings were classified into three groups: [Group I: normal, Group II: indirect effects (hyperemia and compression-mild, moderate, severe), group III: invasion). CT findings were a]so classified into three classes: [Class A: tumor separated from tracheobronehial tree, Class B: abutting tree, Class C: compressing tree]. We investigated the resectability of esophageal cancer according to bronchoscopic and CT findings. Results: 1) Among 133 patients, the bronchscopic findings were Group I in 41(30.8%), Group II in 66(49.6%), and Group III in 26(19.6%) patients. 2) Abnormal bronchoscopic findings were mainly found in trachea and left main bronchus and frequently found in upper and middle esophageal cancer patients, 3) The resection rate from tracheobronchial tree was 96.8% in group I and 75% in group II bronchoscopic finding. 4) The resections from tracheobronchial tree could be performed in 94.6% of Class A, in 70% of Class B and in 53.8% of Class C of CT scan patients. 5) Six of twelve unresectable patients belonged to Class C of CT scan finding If we excluded Class C in Group II patients, resectability would be increased to 87.5%. Conclusion: We could recommend the operation in esophgeal cancer patients with Group I and minimal Group II bronchoscopic finding. In advanced Group II and/or Class C of CT scan patients, neoadjuvant treatment and reevaluation could be recommended.

Primary adrenal lymphoma is extremely uncommon. The tumor is accidentally discovered by abdominal ultrasonography(USG), computed tomography(CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with nonspecific symptoms and diagnosed at operation or autopsy. In this case, a 60-year-old man was admitted for the evaluation of mild left frank discomfort for two months before admission. The abdominal USG was performed and showed the dense masses in both adrenal glands. The laboratory tests including blood count, chemistry and hormonal tests showed the normal levels except for the basal ACTH level of 108 pg/ml(normal range: 9∼52 pg/ml). The 123I MIBG scan was normal. The bilateral adrenalectomy was done. The tumor was diagnosed as diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma(NHL) according to the Revised European-American lymphoma(REAL) classification. He was treated with the adjuvant combination chemotherapy of CHOP(cyclophosphamide, adriamycin, vincristine and prednisolone) but expired due to sepsis after the second chemotherapy. We describe the first case of primary bilateral adrenal NHL in Korea. Primary adrenal lymphoma should be included in the differential diagnosis of suprarenal mass.(Korean J Med 59:423-427, 2000)

Objective : The combination of vincristine and doxorubicin by continuous infusion was reported to reduce tumor mass more rapidly than standard regimens, which maybe a result of effect on more slowly proliferating plasma cells. We conducted a phase II study to determine the activity and safety of VAD (vincristine, doxorubicin, dexamethasone) chemotherapy, in which vincristine and doxorubicin are administered as a continuous infusion, for previously untreated multiple myeloma. Methods : VAD chemotherapy (vincristine 0.4 mg/day 24 hour-continuous infusion, days 1∼4; doxorubicin 9 mg/m2/day 24 hour-continuous infusion, days 1∼4; dexamethasone 40 mg/day p.o. days 1∼4) was given to eligible patients every 4 weeks and we assessed response and toxicity of the regimen. Results : Between January 1991 and March 1997, total 25 patients entered this trial and 22 were evaluable. The complete response rate was 14%(3/22) and overall response rate was 59%(13/22, 95% C.I.: 38∼80%). The time to response was 1.0∼6.8(median 2.9) months. Progression free survival was 2∼39+(median 11.5) months and the overall survival was 3+∼42+(median 19.7) months. Toxicities of VAD regimen were leukopenia, infection, stomatitis and neurotoxicity, but there was no treatment-related death. Conclusion : VAD chemotherapy was tolerable, but not more active than the alkylating agent-based chemotherapy as a front-line treatment for the patients with multiple myeloma. But, because of its rapid response and relatively mild myelotoxicity, it could play a role for advanced or highly complicated disease and for remission induction before consolidation with high-dose chemotherapy.

Polycythemia vera is a hematopoietic stem cell disease, characterized by sustained and excessive proliferation of erythrocytic, granurocytic and megakaryocytic cells in the bone marrow resulting in pancytosis in peripheral blood. There have been a few reports of glomerulonephritis with polycythemia vera, most of which were IgA nephropathy. We report a case of a polycythemia vera associated with proteinuria. We confirmed the polycythemia vera according to World Health Organization criteria. Renal pathology showed IgA nephropathy and minimal change disease. Periodic phlebotomy was done and hydroxyurea was administered without specific managements for renal disease. After 3-month treatment, hemoglobin level decreased and proteinurea disappeared.
