Vol.32 No.2

The themes of Greek myth are constantly varied not only in literature, but also in images. This interaction can be verified in the Hellas community having in common religious and cultural heritages. Especially the tragedy, an Athenian invention, has great influence on the Magna Graecia. For example, Medea of Euripides was painted on several pots produced in southern Italy in the 4th century BC. This paper highlights the myth representation of the pots and its theatricality, investigating the image texts in terms of narrative, characterization, space and object, by comparing them with the literature text of Medea, and exploring the reasons for the differences occurring between the texts. The undeniable fact is that the pots do not illustrate the content of the literature text, but represent Euripides` Medea. Taplin concludes that the scenes on the pots are those of the Medea put in re-performance in southern Italy. But this conclusion fails to notice the difference between the representation of the pots and the record of re-performed Medea. In my opinion, the scenes can be different from those of the re-performed Medea, and succeed in achieving intrinsic theatricality. The pots have an invented theatrical perspective, focus the dramatic moment by representing the scene tabooed according to dramatic convention, and increase the dramatic illusion in a different way from a theater performance.
