This paper is about the Saji(寺志: which is to record the history of temple) which thought to be published in Unified Silla. In the Saji, there are a lot of information such as establishment of temples, history of their renovations, the motivation to construct statues of buddha and pagodas, the miracles people experienced and the contributions of the High Monks. The editors of the Saji are emphasizing the tradition while they arrange the history of temples. Secondly, the editors made the purport of their religion clear through the record of High Monks contributions and miracles of faith and also to emphasize the characteristics of uniqueness. The background to publish the Saji is as follow. First of all, each and every diverse Schools (or temples) had to exhibite convinsinly their contention since there were many other Schools (or temples) sprang in Unified Silla. Secondly, the buddhists needed to be explained about the history of their temples as well as the traditions of their faith as each temples' history were lasting for a long time and expanding too with more followers. Therefore the main two reasons to publish the Saji were, first to showthe superiority of their schools (or temples) then others by emphasizing historical tradition, second to inspire the followers' faith by emphasizing some miracles of the religion. Publishing the Saji in Unified Silla is to record the history of each temples however it is more then that and very meaningful since it enabled to understand the flow of buddhistic history in Unified Silla. As a result, it is very significant in history of historiography since the buddhistic history in Unified Silla takes very big part in a history.

This paper attempts to study Choe Chi Won′s ideologies by escaping the old macro method study and delving into a more specific micro method. We will study the events and people that formed the foundation of Choe Chi Won′s academic knowledge while he wrote the ‘Four Mountain Inscription’. We will cite specific incidences that are considered important. This paper has centered many of its citations on Chinese history. As a result we can see that the subject of interest changes with the period of when certain inscriptions were carved. For example, on the Great-Soongbok Temple Inscription(大崇福寺碑銘), the establishment and development of the Han(漢) nation was mostly attributed to royal subjects. On the Great-Nanghye Hwasang Inscription(大郞慧和尙碑銘), the attribution went to Chang Lyang(張良), and on the jijeung Daesa Inscription(智證大師碑銘), the attribution went to the hermits who lived in hiding. These changes can make one assume that radical political and social changes were interrelated at the time. The jingam Seonsa Inscription(眞鑑禪師碑銘) emphasizes ideals such as ‘out with the old and in with the new’ and ‘things that have to be done can only be carried out when it is possible’. When reflecting these problems, one can assume that at the time of Shila society a need for reform was probably felt.

This research is about the government working on erection of monuments for Wonhyo (元曉) and other high priests to commemorate their achievement in early 'late period(下代), of Silla and the results are as follow. Through the age of Unified Silla, from middle period (中代) to late period, there were significant political changes and in the process there were tension and complication between the government and buddhistic world. This is understood as an result of change which happens the genuine cohesion between buddhism and aristocrats linked with the political problems in the course of political changes. Therefore the King Wonsung set the JungBupjun(政法典: The ministry of Buddhism) at the same time as his accession of the throne to stop an abuse. However, it was to control buddhism and soon confronted by severe repulsion from them Therefore the new government tried to pacify the buddhistic world through some commemorate campaigns by erection of monuments of high priests. In other words, the new government tried to show that it is not to control buddhism but cherish it and further more to keep the spirit of buddhism. As I explained above, it was not easy at all to control the buddhistic world and at the same time to get support from them for political stability.
