An 11 years old Irish Setter bitch was euthanlzed and necropsied because of clinical findings such as severe purulent nasal discharge and formation of large tumor mass, 8 ${\times}$8cm in size, in the abdominal cavity. A complete unilateral mastectomy had been carried out twice 14 and 22 months before necropsy. The surgically removed masess of the mammary glands had been diagnosed as malignant mixed tumor in each time. Grossly, tumor masses were observed in nasal cavity, infralumbar lymph node, lung, abdominal cavityn and brain. Microscopic findings of the surgically removed masses consisted of tumor epithelial cells, tumor hyaline cartilage-like structures and abundant connective tissues. The mass of the lymph node had similar microscopic features to those of the original malignant mixed tumor of the mammary glands. The tumor osseous tissue and osteoid were observed in the abdominal cavity, lung, and brain. Myoepithelial cells were frequently found on association with the metastatic tumors. From the results, it was concluded that malignant mixed tumor of the mammary glands metastasized to the infralunbar lymph node, abdominal cavity, lung and brain. In addition, the observation in this study supported two theories at the same time that the bone in malignant mixed tumor arises by endochondral ossification of the cartilage formed by the myoepithelial cells and arises by intramembranous ossification of stromal connective tissue or transformed myeopithelial cells. Solid carcinoma of the nasal epielia and granulosa cell tumor were also diagnosed in a mass of the nasal cavity and of the ovaries respectively.

Two cases of stomach mass and one case of tongue mass were observed in Japanese monkeys(Macaca fuscata) which were raised in Yong-in Farm Land. Histologically, two spontaneous tumors were found in the cardiac region of the stomach and were diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma. These tumors had invaded the submucosa, muscular layer and serosa, but metastasis was not found in the other tissues including the lymph node. One spontaneous tongue mass was diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma.

Two intraocular tumors were identified in low and medium dosed groups of a carcinogenicity study using 200 males and 200 females Sprague-Dawley rats in Screening & Toxicology Research Center, Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology. The tumors were grossly observed as white or yellow, unilateral nodules. They were approximately $1-2{\times}3-5mm$ in size. The tumors located in the region of iris and/or ciliary body invaded peripheral cornea. The microscopic features were usually composed of spindle cells arranged in parallel, forming gently curving bundles or whorls. The spindle cells had poorly defined cell boundaries, scant to moderate cytoplasm, fusiform nuclei and indistinct nucleoli. Mitotic figures were rare and areas of necrosis were present. The spindle cells had positive immunoreactivity for S-100 protein and vimentin but negative for desmin, collagen and HMB-45 antibody. In special histochemical studies, the spindle cells react with Gomori's stain for argyrophih fibers, Prussian blue stain for iron but negative with Masson-Fontana's stain for melanin granules. Ultrastructurally, cytoplasmic premelanosomes were not observed in the tumor cells due to the poor preservation of tumor masses. Based on the results, the tumors were diagnosed as amelanotic melanoma.

Serpulina(S) hyodysenteriae B 204 strain이 생산한 세포독소에 의한 장점막의 변화를 알아보기 위하여 일반사육조건에서 사육된 8주령, 수컷 잡종돼지 2마리의 결장을 외과적으로 결찰한 계제(loop)를 이용하여 실험하였다. Serpulina균을 trypticase soy broth(TSB)에 배양하여 결찰한 결장계제 4곳에 각각 멸균한 Serpulina균 TSB, 여과한 Serpulina균 TSB, 세척한 Serpulina균, 무처치 Serpulina균 TSB를 접종하였다. 점막조직을 접종(p.i.) 24, 48시간 후에 채취한 후 처리하여 주사전자현미경과 투과전자현미경으로 관찰하였다. 여과한 Serpulina균 TSB를 접종한 경우는 변화가 관찰되지 않았으나 세척한 Serpulina균을 접종한 경우는 무처치 Serpulina균 TSB를 접종한 부위에서 나타난 것과 유사한 초기변화가 관찰되었다. 본 실험의 결과는 Serpulina균의 세포독소가 실험적 감염시 초기병변형성에 별로 기여하지 않음을 시사하였다. Serpulina균의 독소가 병변을 야기하는데 관여하는 기전은 밝혀지지 않았다. The cytotoxic effects of S hyodysenteriae strain B 204 on the mucosal surface were studied in surgically prepared ligated colonic loops in two male convenitonal mixed-breed pigs. In each one of four loops was inoculated with either sterile trypticase soy broth(TSB) of Serpulina, filtrate of Serpulina TSB culture. washed Serpulina cells or whole culture of Serpulina. Mucosal tissues were examined by transmission and scanning electron microscopy 24 and 48 hours after inoculation(p.i.). The filtrate did not induce any significant effect on the mucosal surface. The washed cells produced early lesions similar to those caused by the whole culture. These observations suggest that cytotoxins of the culture do not play a significant role in invasion of the epithelium in this experimental infection. The possible role of toxins associated with the organism at the site of interaction with the epithelial cells was not elucidated.

Tumor masses from a Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris) of 13 years in age raised at the natural farm in Yong-In were examined grossly and microscopically. The tumors were observed in the subcutis, lung, heart, liver, pancreas, kidney, cecum and spleen. Histologically the tumors were composed of solid anaplastic cells that formed mature or immature small blood vessels and invaded the adjacent parenchyma. The nuclei of the tumor cells were large, vacuolated, and round or ovoid, sometimes dense and ovoid or spindle. The mitotic figures were common and the boundaries between the cells were indistinct. The stroma was very sparse. A diagnosis of this case was made as hemangiosarcoma on the basis of gross and microscopic features.

The current study was performed to determine the acute oral toxicity of P55A, a crude extract of 1:1 mixture of Phellodendron amurense cortex and Aralia elate cortex, in SD rats and beagle dogs. 5 rats of each sex were treated with a single dose of P55A orally at doses of 0 and 5,000 mg/kg respectively. Also 2 dogs of each sex were treated with a single dose of P55A orally at doses of 0 and 2,000 mg/kg, respectively. After the treatment, clinical signs, and body weight change were observed for 14 days. All rats survived during the study and did not show any clinical sign. Body weight gain showed no significant difference between the control and treated rats. Grossly, no lesion was observed in the rats. All dogs survived during the study. In clinical signs, dark stool was observed in the 2,000 mg/kg treated dogs at day 1 after administration. The animals recovered from general signs at day 2 after administration. Body weight gain showed no significant difference between the control and treated dogs. Grossly, no lesion was observed in the dogs. It is suggested that the LD_(50) of P55A by oral administration was estimated to be over 5,000 mg/kg in both sexes of rats and 2,000 mg/kg in both sexes of beagle dogs.

We present background data of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats from the control groups of 2 weeks and 4 weeks repeated-dose toxicity studies performed in our laboratory during 2002-2003. These include hematology, blood biochemistry and organ weights. These data can be used as background data for the interpretation of data from repeated-dose toxicity studies of drugs or chemicals in SD rats.
