The Charpy and Izod impact tests are the most prevalent techniques used to characterize the effects of high impulse loads on ploymeric materials. An analysis method for rubber toughened PVC is suggested to evaluate critical dynamic strain energy release rates(G$\_$c/) from the Charpy impact energy measurements. An instrumented Charpy impact tester was used to extract ancillary information concerning fracture parameters in addition to total fracture energies and maximum critical loads. The dynamic stress intensity factor Kid was computed for varying amounts of rubber contents from the obtained maximum critical loads and also toughening effects were investigated as well.

Applications of joints are expanding to structures and industrial parts. These achievements are made possible through the research and development of technologies to join ceramics to metals. During the course of cooling thermal stresses will be developed and retained in the bonded ceramic/metal joints at any temperatures due to substantial differences in thermal expansion coefficients between ceramics and metals. Assessments of residual stresses retained in ceramic/metal joints become essential to ensure reliability and bonding strength of ceramic/metal joints. When the active joining method is employed to join ceramics to metals, it has been proved that tensile residual stresses are developed at joining interface on ceramic side and consequently fracture can also occur on ceramic side. However, scarce is the research concerning effects on residual stresses due to thermal cycles and other service conditions that ceramic/metal joints normally experience during their life time of service. Effect of a multi-thermal cycle on si₃N₄/SUS304 joint with the layer of copper was analyed using the thermo-elastic-plastic solution by finite element method (FEM). The increase of residual stresses was thought to be caused dependence of the yield stress of copper.

It's very important to estimate the amount of residual stresses quantatively depending on heat treatment condition on metal alloy since the residual stress causes the degradation of the products in strength and poor products in quality. Present paper discusses the methodology how to estimate residual stresses and investigates the heat treatment effects on residual stresses using the hole drilling method for heat treated and non heat treated metal alloy The results show that the amount of residual stress varies with drilling depth nonuniformly and the designer can more effectivly control the residual stresses by being able to estimate heat treatment condition quanatively through the drilling hole method. Through this method engineers can predict the heat treatment effects and can use to control the heat treatment.
