“The Kindness of Strangers”: Paul Yoon’s Cosmopolitan Imagination in Snow Hunters

Vol.24 No.2

This paper examines major issues in recent discussion of cosmopolitanism and analyze Yoon’s rendering of cosmopolitan interactions in Snow Hunters. The newly forming cosmopolitanism, distinct from the traditional one that was refined in Western Europe under the influence the Enlightenment, is less antagonistic to nationalism and more focused on gaps, crevices, and overlaps in the national and cultural boundaries. Its goal is to delineate basic ethical responsibility toward political and cultural others while retaining respect for their particular lives. Paul Yoon’s Snow Hunters revises the traditional western cosmopolitanism by focusing on the fluid movements between the positions of a host and a guest displayed by its diasporic main characters. Ultimately, Yoon portrays how, interspersed with and yet counteracting the painful and fragmented memories of Yohan, the traumatized protagonist of the novel, small acts of kindness from strangers and of his own sustain and then heal him.

“A Nothingness Capable of Damage”: Translating Trauma and Reading Alterity in The Foreign Student

Vol.20 No.-

This essay examines both the practice of translation and the trope of it as they are represented and reproduced by Susan Choi’s The Foreign Student. Chang and Katherine, the two protagonists of the novel, succeed in redefining each other outside the limiting social categorization and in relation to each other. This is made possible not because they identify with each other, but because they appreciate and respond to the complete Otherness each poses to the other. I argue that this relation is modeled after translation where languages touch without merging. The disruptive potential of such an ethical communication paradigm is realized inside the novel, through Chang’s translation, and also on the level of the narrative, as it is presented as a(n incomplete) translation of Chang’s story.

Vol.0 No.33

Publised in 2000, Don DeLillo's The Body Artist is radicaaly different from his previous works in its theme and scope. Instead of offering a panoramic overview of the effects of global capitalism, the short novel proves into the traumatized mind of a body artist. In The Body Artist DeLillo experiments with the narrative form as it performs, rather than heals, the trauma. As a result, the reader is invieted to participate in the protagonist's gradual recognition of her self as irreversibly damaged by the loss of the loved other. This new way of perceiving the self is important as it leads to the realization of the Self that is vulnerable to, and thus open to, the Other. Thus conceived, this self-other relationship also opens the possibility of re-reading the past and forming a sess self-centerd future. This is a possibility DeLilloe explores in Falling Man while dealing with 9·11, a national trauma of the U.S. In the novel, DeLillo counteracts the patriotic and oversimplified representations of 9·11 which have contributed to the totalitarian turn of th Bush administration. Extending the formal experiment of performing trauma on the lovel of narrative, Falling Man forces the reader to face the naked moment of the catastrophe. However, Falling Man stops short of imagining a different kind of a nation self, as it fails to confront the complex causes and outcomes of the terror attack.

“You inside me inside you”: Reading the Other in Self in How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia

Vol.43 No.-

Moshin Hamid’s How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia almost announces itself to be a parody of self-help literature and has been duly discussed as such. On the other hand, linguists and narratologists have been interested in the novel’s peculiar use of the second-person narration. I argue that the second-person narration is key to understanding the specific way How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia undermines the popular understanding of the self and recognizes the others at whose expense the self is constructed. Furthermore, by positioning the reader as a Western person, Hamid brings to the fore the expansive and intricate relationships that are formed yet often neglected in the age of global capitalism.

Kkonmoe relic located in Jangan-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do Provinceis an example of the wide chronology from the Three Kingdoms Period to Joseon Dynasty. Examinations on a forged iron ax, a cast iron ax and an iron sickle excavated from this relic revealed the microstructure structure of the metal and the manufacturing technologies. Microstructure investigation was carried out with a metallurgical microscope and a Vickers hardness tester was used to measure the hardness of the micro structures. The test results show that the forged iron ax has a ferrite and pearlitestructure. It is made of low carbon steel and then carbonized to increase carbon content. After carbonization, the surface grains are reworked and the surface decarbonized. In case of the iron sickle, it is forged from low carbon steel, then carbonized and hardened, to increase overall strength. The sickle blade is carbonized and quenched after forging, resulting in afirm, solid blade. Heat treatment to remove brittleness is not applied to the cast ironartifact, which is manufactured by solidifing hypo-eutectic cast iron with a3-4% carbon content and white cast iron. All artifacts are produced from steel and subjected to a carbonization process. To increase hardness of the blade, additional heat treatment is applied.

Vol.15 No.-

This study was carried to investigate forest communities in Mt. Sokri from July 1987 to September 1989. DBH analysis was applied to the data of 171 quadrats using releve method of Mueller-Dombois and Ellenberg. The results of this study are as follows: 1. DBH analysis showed that pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis communities are likely replacing Quercus mongolica of Quercus serrata. 2. Quercus mongolica community seems to remain as a dominant species for a long time. 3. Quercus serrata community seems to remain as a dominant species for a certain period. 4. Carpinus laxiflora community seems to remain continuously as a dominant species.

Vol.22 No.-

No. 3 Tomb of Bogam-ri, in Naju City, Chollanam-do Province, was a site excavated and inspected from 1996 to 1998 and had a various grave forms, including jar-coffins, stone-chambers and stone-cists. Although most of the metal artifacts excavated from it were severely corroded, we could implement microstructure investigation by collecting samples from the iron axes, iron coffin-nails and iron clamps in which the metal parts were remained. The metal structures were inspected by using metallographic microscope and SEM, and fine components analysis was implemented by ICP. To examine the hardness differences in accordance with the structure distribution, we measured the hardness by structures with Vickers hardness testing machine. As a result of the metal structure inspection, most of them were pure iron, ferrite, and also pearlite, cementite and widmannstaten structures were displayed. We could confirm carbonization was formed on the surface of the iron axes-B, iron coffin-nails-B, and iron clamps-A. There was no carbonization in the rest of the artifacts, and it is not certain that whether the carbonized parts were peeled off through extreme corrosion or they were not carbonized when they were made. In the particular part of a blade, the quality of the material was strengthened through processing. Due to the processing re-grain was caused and fine grain particles were formed. As a result of the ICP component analysis, there were no addition atoms because pure irons were used as materials. In the mean time, No. 17 jar-coffin where the iron axes-A are excavated, is chronologically ordered as from the late-fourth century to the mid-fifth century, and No. 1 and No. 2 stone chambers, where the rest of the artifacts were excavated, as the early-sixth century. It was difficult to relate the periodic differences with the manufacture technique artifacts which we inspected because there were no distinct characteristics of the manufacture technique of the metal structures and it is impossible to conclude the artifacts and sites are at the same period although their periods are different.
