      • Language and Ethnicity in Modern Japan

        The present article attempts to sketch how language in national studies in 20th Century Japan was connected with the theory of ethnicity, and how these studies about language dealt with the various languages of several ethnicities during the period of Japan`s imperialist expansion. It concludes that it was a failure because Japan read ethnicity excessively into language and this led to an ungraceful lack of imagination about other ethnicities and gave it a sense of superiority over others. Explicitly and implicitly Imperial Japan expounded on the combination of ethnicity and language, and applied that combination only to the ruling language. Even when Japan confronted varieties of other languages it attempted to manage these varieties by appointing the Japanese language as the leader of the alliance. Imperialist Japan attempted to control "East Asia" and the "Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere" using the hierarchical status of language led by the Japanese language. If we take this fact as a lesson in disguise, we would conclude that in the "East Asian Studies" of the 21st Century a hierarchical concept of language is not necessary and that the study of languages should reflect the multi-farious and multi-ethnic "East Asia" as it is.

        오구라 신페이(小倉進平)의 조선어 연구는 어떤 의미를 지니는가?

        오구라 신페이(小倉進平)는 현대 조선어 연구에 본격적으로 착수한 인물의 한 사람이다. 본고에서는 오구라의 연구의 근저에 있는 지향을 탐색하고자 한다. 그것은 오구라를 도쿄제국대학에서 지도했던 우에다 가즈토시(上田万年)가 구상한 「제국대학 언어학」의 지향과 일치하는 것이었다. 즉, 일본어와 그 주변 여러 언어와의 관계를 비교언어학적으로 고찰하기 위한 재료를 찾기 위한 연구였다. 따라서 조선어의 고형(古形)을 재구성하기 위해 오구라는 문헌 자료와 방언 조사를 적극적으로 실시했다. 그 결과, 일본어와 조선어의 동계론에 대한 신중한 입장을 얻게 되고, 또한 방언 조사를 통해 종합적인 방언구획론을 구축할 수 있었다. 그러나 그러한 자세는 식민지지배하의 조선어의 현실을 직시하는 것은 아니었던 점을 잊지 말아야 할 것이다. 小倉進平は近代的な朝鮮語研究に本格的にとりくんだ人物のひとりとされている。本稿では、小倉の研究の根底にある志向をとりだすことにした。それは、小倉を東京帝国大学で指導した上田万年の構想した「帝国大学言語学」の志向と一致するものであった。つまり、日本語とその周辺諸言語との関連を比較言語学的に考察するための材料を探すための研究であった。したがって、朝鮮語のより古い形を求めて小倉は、文献資料や方言調査を精力的におこなっていった。その結果として、日本語と朝鮮語の同系論に対する慎重な立場を得ることになり、また方言調査によって総合的な方言区画論を構築することができた。しかし、そうした姿勢は、植民地支配下における朝鮮語の現実を直視するものではなかった点を忘れてはならないだろう。

        Cardiac Rehabilitation Increases Exercise Capacity with a Reduction of Oxidative Stress

        Background and Objectives: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediate various signaling pathways that underlie vascular inflammation in atherogenesis and cardiovascular diseases. Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) has a variety of multiple beneficial effects, including anti-inflam -matory effects. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of CR on ROS in patients with cardiovascular diseases. Subjects and Methods: The serum level of derivatives of reactive oxidative metabolites, an index of oxidative stress, was measured in 100 patients with cardiovascular diseases before, and, subsequently, 3 and 6 months after, CR. A biological antioxidant potential (BAP) test was applied to assess the antioxidant power of the serum. Results: The resting reactive oxidative metabolite levels decreased 3-6 months after CR {pre: 351±97 Carratelli unit (CARR U), 3 months:329±77 CARR U, 6 months: 325±63 CARR U, all p<0.01} with the increase of the percentage of the predicted values of V˙O 2 peak and the percentage of the predicted values of V˙O 2 at the anaerobic threshold (V˙O 2 AT ) and the decrease of the B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP). The BAP test and antioxidative/oxidative stress ratio increased 6 months after CR. The % changes of the antioxidative/oxidative stress ratio was positively correlated with the % changes of V˙O 2 AT , and negatively correlated with the % changes of the BNP. Conclusion: These results suggest that intensive supervised CR significantly improved exercise capacity, which may be attributable to an adaptive response involving more efficient oxidative metabolites or the increased capacity of endogenous anti-oxidative systems in pa -tients with cardiovascular diseases.

      • Synthesis of metallic copper nanoparticles and metal-metal bonding process using them

        Metallic copper nanoparticles were synthesised by reduction of copper ions in aqueous solution, and metal-metal bonding by using the nanoparticles was studied. A colloid solution of metallic copper nanoparticles was prepared by mixing an aqueous solution of $CuCl_2$ (0.01 M) and an aqueous solution of hydrazine (reductant) (0.2-1.0 M) in the presence of 0.0005 M of citric acid and 0.005 M of n-hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (stabilizers) at reduction temperature of $30-80^{\circ}C$. Copper-particle size varied (in the range of ca. 80-165 nm) with varying hydrazine concentration and reduction temperature. These dependences of particle size are explained by changes in number of metallic-copper-particle nuclei (determined by reduction rate) and changes in collision frequency of particles (based on movement of particles in accordance with temperature). The main component in the nanoparticles is metallic copper, and the metallic-copper particles are polycrystalline. Metallic-copper discs were successfully bonded by annealing at $400^{\circ}C$ and pressure of 1.2 MPa for 5 min in hydrogen gas with the help of the metalli-ccopper particles. Shear strength of the bonded copper discs was then measured. Dependences of shear strength on hydrazine concentration and reduction temperature were explained in terms of progress state of reduction, amount of impurity and particle size. Highest shear strength of 40.0 MPa was recorded for a colloid solution prepared at hydrazine concentration of 0.8 M and reduction temperature of $50^{\circ}C$.

        Perianal and Vulvar Extramammary Paget Disease: A Report of Six Cases and Mapping Biopsy of the Anal Canal

        Treatment of perianal and vulvar extramammary Paget disease (EMPD), rare intraepithelial malignancies, is often challenging because of its potential to spread into the anal canal. However, there is still no consensus regarding the optimal resection margin within the anal canal. Between 2004 and 2014, six patients (three with perianal EMPD and three with vulvar EMPD) in which the spread of Paget cells into the anal canal was highly suspected were referred to our department. To evaluate the disease extent within the anal canal, preoperative mapping biopsy of the anal canal was performed in five out of six patients. Two patients were positive for Paget cells within the anal canal (one at the dentate line and the other at 0.5 cm above the dentate line), whereas in three patients, Paget cell were present only in the skin of the anal verge. Using 1 cm margin within the anal canal from the positive biopsy sites, we performed anal-preserving wide local excision (WLE), and negative resection margins within the anal canal were confirmed in all five patients. The remaining one patient with perianal EMPD did not undergo mapping biopsy of the anal canal because preoperative colonoscopy revealed that the Paget cells had spread into the lower rectum. Therefore, WLE with abdominoperineal resection was performed. During the median follow-up period of 37.3 months, no local recurrence was observed in all patients. Our small case series suggest the usefulness of mapping biopsy of the anal canal for the treatment of perianal and vulvar EMPD. (Ann Dermatol 28(5) 624∼628, 2016)
