      • Physical and cognitive functioning to explain the quality of life among older adults with mild cognitive impairment

        Xing Fan,Jisu Seo,YueLin Li,Ahyun Ryu,Kyoungok Joo,Moonkyoung Park,Rhayun Song 한국간호과학회 2021 한국간호과학회 학술대회 Vol.2021 No.10

Aim(s): Physical and cognitive functioning are both indicators of aging process. Older adults experience abnormal declines in physical and cognitive functioning that increase their risk of dependence, subsequently quality of life. This study aims to explore the relationship between physical and cognitive functioning, and mediation effect of cognitive functioning on the relationship of physical functioning and health-related quality of life among older adults with mild cognitive impairment. Method(s): Seventy-nine older adults living in community participated in the study. Measurements included the self-reported questionnaire for physical functioning consisted of grip strength, one leg standing with eyes open (balance), and Timed Up and Go (mobility). Cognitive functioning was measured by Korean version of MOCA. SF-12 was used to assess physical and psychological components of quality of life (QOL). Data were using multiple regression and a simple mediation model applying the PROCESS macro for mediation. Result(s): Physical functioning explained 14.5% of variance in cognitive functioning. Physical and cognitive functioning together explained 22.4% of variance in physical component of QOL, 18.7% of variance in mental component of QOL. Indicators of physical functioning significantly related with cognitive functioning with balance (B=0.41, p=.02). Cognitive functioning had significant indirect effects B= 0.19, 95%CI (.491~.008) between balance and physical component of QOL, while the indirect effects was not significant with mental component of QOL (B=0.06, 95%CI -.107~0.332). Conclusion(s): The findings showed cognitive functioning had a significant mediating effects between the physical functioning and physical components of QOL. These findings have suggested that nursing intervention to improve physical functioning such as balance, mobility and grip strength may also improve cognitive functioning, consequently improving physical component of QOL for older adults with mild cognitive impairment. Further studies are warranted to explore the effects of health promotion programs designed to enhance physical and cognitive functioning in this population.

        Lexicalization Patterns and Lexical Inferencing

        Xing Fan,윤영은 한국외국어대학교 언어연구소 2020 언어와 언어학 Vol.0 No.90

Lexical inferencing, which is an effective vocabulary development strategy, has been investigated by many researchers in the field of reading to date; however, it has received far too little attention in listening. In this context, this paper explores the role of L1 lexicalization patterns in lexical inferencing in listening. To this end, a listening experiment was carried out with 15 short texts containing 15 target words to both native (N=8) and four groups of non-native (N=32) speakers of English. We included 15 Motion verb target words since Chinese, Korean, and Japanese are known to have different lexicalization patterns for Motion events. The results show that the two groups of Chinese-speaking participants achieved higher inferencing scores than the Korean- and Japanese-speaking participants because English and Chinese have similarities in lexicalization patterns of Motion events. In addition, Korean and Japanese listeners achieved significantly different inferencing scores, although these two languages are categorized into the same typological group. Hence, it is proposed that L1 lexicalization patterns play an essential role in guessing the meaning of target words in listening. We also present some results on the knowledge sources used in the lexical inferencing of the target words.

      • Video-assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery for Treatment of Earlystage Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

Fan, Xing-Long,Liu, Yu-Xia,Tian, Hui Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.5

Objectives: To evaluate the safety, efficacy, and invasiveness of lobectomy by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) in the treatment of stage I/II non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods: A total of 148 patients presenting with Stage I or II NSCLC were enrolled into our study, comprising 71 who underwent VATS and 77 patients undergoing conventional thoracotomic lobectomy, in combination with systematic lymph node resection. Results: It was found that VATS was superior to conventional thoracotomy in terms of the duration of surgery, intraoperative blood loss, frequency of the need to administer postoperative analgesia, thoracic intubation indwelling time, post-operative hospital stay, and survival rate (P<0.05). We saw no obvious difference in the number of resected lymph nodes with either approach. Conclusions: VATS lobectomy is a safe and reliable surgical approach for the treatment of Stage I/II NSCLC, characterized by significantly minimal invasiveness, rapid post-operative recovery, and markedly lower loss of blood.

"Wuhan stories",which describes the local conditions and customs in Wuhan has become a new important part of contemporary stories of Chinese metropolisesm. Both Fang Fang and Chi Li are good at creating "Wuhan stories". They have depicted the complex characters of Wuhan people, showing how they live a life full of astuteness, rudeness, humor, fortitude and flexibility. Meanwhile, they are also fond of telling stories in vivid Wuhan dialect sometimes, which fully expresses the taste of Wuhan people’sdaily life in slippery, witty and exaggerate style. And this is also a new discovery in Chinese literature written in various dialect.

Diversity, distribution, and antagonistic activities of rhizobacteria of Panax notoginseng

        Fan, Ze-Yan,Miao, Cui-Ping,Qiao, Xin-Guo,Zheng, You-Kun,Chen, Hua-Hong,Chen, You-Wei,Xu, Li-Hua,Zhao, Li-Xing,Guan, Hui-Lin The Korean Society of Ginseng 2016 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.40 No.2

Background: Rhizobacteria play an important role in plant defense and could be promising sources of biocontrol agents. This study aimed to screen antagonistic bacteria and develop a biocontrol system for root rot complex of Panax notoginseng. Methods: Pure-culture methods were used to isolate bacteria from the rhizosphere soil of notoginseng plants. The identification of isolates was based on the analysis of 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequences. Results: A total of 279 bacteria were obtained from rhizosphere soils of healthy and root-rot notoginseng plants, and uncultivated soil. Among all the isolates, 88 showed antagonistic activity to at least one of three phytopathogenic fungi, Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium solani, and Phoma herbarum mainly causing root rot disease of P. notoginseng. Based on the 16S rRNA sequencing, the antagonistic bacteria were characterized into four clusters, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetesi. The genus Bacillus was the most frequently isolated, and Bacillus siamensis (Hs02), Bacillus atrophaeus (Hs09) showed strong antagonistic activity to the three pathogens. The distribution pattern differed in soil types, genera Achromobacter, Acidovorax, Brevibacterium, Brevundimonas, Flavimonas, and Streptomyces were only found in rhizosphere of healthy plants, while Delftia, Leclercia, Brevibacillus, Microbacterium, Pantoea, Rhizobium, and Stenotrophomonas only exist in soil of diseased plant, and Acinetobacter only exist in uncultivated soil. Conclusion: The results suggest that diverse bacteria exist in the P. notoginseng rhizosphere soil, with differences in community in the same field, and antagonistic isolates may be good potential biological control agent for the notoginseng root-rot diseases caused by F. oxysporum, Fusarium solani, and Panax herbarum.

Effect of Soyabean Isoflavones Exposure on Onset of Puberty, Serum Hormone Concentration and Gene Expression in Hypothalamus, Pituitary Gland and Ovary of Female Bama Miniature Pigs

        Fan, Juexin,Zhang, Bin,Li, Lili,Xiao, Chaowu,Oladele, Oso Abimbola,Jiang, Guoli,Ding, Hao,Wang, Shengping,Xing, Yueteng,Xiao, Dingfu,Yin, Yulong Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2015 Animal Bioscience Vol.28 No.11

This study was to investigate the effect of soyabean isoflavones (SIF) on onset of puberty, serum hormone concentration, and gene expression in hypothalamus, pituitary and ovary of female Bama miniature pigs. Fifty five, 35-days old pigs were randomly assigned into 5 treatment groups consisting of 11 pigs per treatment. Results showed that dietary supplementation of varying dosage (0, 250, 500, and 1,250 mg/kg) of SIF induced puberty delay of the pigs with the age of puberty of pigs fed basal diet supplemented with 1,250 mg/kg SIF was significantly higher (p<0.05) compared to control. Supplementation of SIF or estradiol valerate (EV) reduced (p<0.05) serum gonadotrophin releasing hormone and luteinizing hormone concentration, but increased follicle-stimulating hormone concentration in pigs at 4 months of age. The expression of KiSS-1 metastasis-suppressor (KISS1), steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) and 3-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase/delta-5-delta-4 isomerase ($3{\beta}-HSD$) was reduced (p<0.01) in SIF-supplemented groups. Expression of gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor in the pituitary of miniature pigs was reduced (p<0.05) compared to the control when exposed to 250, 1,250 mg/kg SIF and EV. Pigs on 250 mg/kg SIF and EV also showed reduced (p<0.05) expression of cytochrome P450 19A1 compared to the control. Our results indicated that dietary supplementation of SIF induced puberty delay, which may be due to down-regulation of key genes that play vital roles in the synthesis of steroid hormones.
