<P>Oct4 is a crucial germ line-specific transcription factor expressed in different pluripotent cells and downregulated in the process of differentiation. There are two conserved enhancers, called the distal enhancer (DE) and proximal enhancer (PE), in the 5′ upstream regulatory sequences (URSs) of the mouse<I> Oct4</I> gene, which were demonstrated to control<I> Oct4</I> expression independently in embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and epiblast stem cells (EpiSCs). We analyzed the URSs of the pig<I> Oct4</I> and identified two similar enhancers that were highly consistent with the mouse DE and PE. A dual-fluorescence reporter was later constructed by combining a DE-free-<I>Oct4</I>-promoter-driven EGFP reporter cassette with a PE-free-<I>Oct4</I>-promoter-driven mCherry reporter cassette. Then, it was tested in a mouse ESC-like cell line (F9) and a mouse EpiSC-like cell line (P19) before it is formally used for pig. As a result, a higher red fluorescence was observed in F9 cells, while green fluorescence was primarily detected in P19 cells. This fluorescence expression pattern in the two cell lines was consistent with that in the early naïve pluripotent state and late primed pluripotent state during differentiation of mouse ESCs. Hence, this reporter system will be a convenient tool for screening out ESC-like naïve pluripotent stem cells from other metastable state cells in a heterogenous population.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The four new sesquiterpenoids <B>1</B>–<B>4</B>, and the new 2‐(2‐phenylethyl)‐4<I>H</I>‐chromen‐4‐one (=2‐(2‐phenylethyl)‐4<I>H</I>‐1‐benzopyran‐4‐one) derivative <B>5</B>, together with the two known sesquiterpenoids <B>6</B> and <B>7</B>, the five known chromenones <B>8</B>–<B>12</B>, and 1‐hydroxy‐1,5‐diphenylpentan‐3‐one (<B>13</B>), were isolated from a 70% MeOH extract of <I>Aquilaria malaccensis</I> agarwood chips. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of comprehensive spectral analyses and comparison with literature data.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Industrial demands for sustainable and renewable energy resources have inspired studies on photonic and electronic properties of graphitic-carbon nitride (<I>g</I>-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB>) as a promising photocatalyst without precious metal. The absorption and the yield by metal-free pristine <I>g</I>-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB> are, however, still limited with hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) mostly around ultraviolet-light. Here, we propose the graphene-decorated <I>g</I>-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB> as a metal-free photocatalyst under visible-light, based on our atomic-scale measurements and calculations. The <I>g</I>-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB> nanosheets on highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) exhibit band-gaps appropriate for visible-light absorption and work-functions tuned for band alignments to supply electrons and holes for HER/OER. Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) measurements for local density of states (LDOS) in atomic scale and work-functions in nanometer scale with ab initio calculations confirmed the various electronic transitions for each nitrogen and carbon atom in different atomic registries. The graphene-decorated <I>g</I>-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB>, therefore, could provide a breakthrough enabling the efficient water-splitting reactions under visible-light without precious metal.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The potocatalytic mechanism of graphene/<I>g</I>-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB> was unveiled by STM measurements and DFT calculations at the atomic scale. </LI> <LI> This heterostructure has a direct and indirect band-gaps of 2.51 and 1.64 eV, representing the best fit to a visible light. </LI> <LI> Band alignments appropriate for HER and OER could be confirmed by thickness-dependent CPD measurements by KPFM and STS. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>Summary of the research: Graphene-decorated graphitic carbon nitride (<I>g</I>-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB>) can be a metal-free photocatalyst for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) under visible light. <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Eight new and eight known 2‐(2‐phenylethyl)chromone (=2‐(2‐phenylethyl)‐4<I>H</I>‐1‐benzopyran‐4‐one) derivatives, <I>i.e.</I>, <B>1</B>–<B>8</B> and <B>9</B>–<B>16</B>, respectively, together with the two known sesquiterpenoids <B>17</B> and <B>18</B> were isolated from a 70% MeOH extract of <I>Aquilaria malaccensis</I> (AM) agarwood chips. Their structures were determined based on extensive spectroscopic analysis and comparison with reported data.</P>

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: By the year 2050, thirty-eight percent of the Korean population will be over the age of 65. Health care costs for Koreans over age 65 reached 15.4 trillion Korean won in 2011, accounting for a third of the total health care costs for the population. Chronic degenerative diseases, including coronary heart disease (CHD), drive long-term health care costs at an alarming annual rate. In the elderly population, loss of independence is one of the main reasons for this increase in health care costs. Korean heath policies place a high priority on the prevention of CHD because it is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This evidence-based study aims to the estimate potential health care cost savings resulting from the daily intake of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation. Potential cost savings associated with a reduced risk of CHD and the medical costs potentially avoided through risk reduction, including hospitalizations and physician services, were estimated using a Congressional Budget Office cost accounting methodology. RESULTS: The estimate of the seven-year (2005-2011) net savings in medical costs resulting from a reduction in the incidence of CHD among the elderly population through the daily use of omega-3 fatty acids was approximately 210 billion Korean won. Approximately 92,997 hospitalizations due to CHD could be avoided over the seven years. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that omega-3 supplementation in older individuals may yield substantial cost-savings by reducing the risk of CHD. It should be noted that additional health and cost benefits need to be revisited and re-evaluated as more is known about possible data sources or as new data become available.
Stereo Image Quality Assessment Using Visual Attention and Distortion Predictors

Several metrics have been reported in the literature to assess stereo image quality, mostly based on visual attention or human visual sensitivity based distortion prediction with the help of disparity information, which do not consider the combined aspects of human visual processing. In this paper, visual attention and depth assisted stereo image quality assessment model (VAD-SIQAM) is devised that consists of three main components, i.e., stereo attention predictor (SAP), depth variation (DV), and stereo distortion predictor (SDP). Visual attention is modeled based on entropy and inverse contrast to detect regions or objects of interest/attention. Depth variation is fused into the attention probability to account for the amount of changed depth in distorted stereo images. Finally, the stereo distortion predictor is designed by integrating distortion probability, which is based on low-level human visual system (HVS), responses into actual attention probabilities. The results show that regions of attention are detected among the visually significant distortions in the stereo image pair. Drawbacks of human visual sensitivity based picture quality metrics are alleviated by integrating visual attention and depth information. We also show that positive correlation with ground-truth attention and depth maps are increased by up to 0.949 and 0.936 in terms of the Pearson and the Spearman correlation coefficients, respectively.

<P>Ribosomal protein L21 (RPL21) is a structural component of the 60S subunit of the eukaryotic ribosome. This protein has an important role in protein synthesis and the occurrence of hereditary diseases. Pig is a common laboratory model, however, to the best of our knowledge, its <I>RPL21</I> gene has not been cloned to date. In this study, we cloned and identified the full-length sequence of the pig <I>RPL21</I> gene for the first time. In addition, we examined its expression pattern and function by using overexpression or knockdown approaches. As a result, we obtained a 604 bp segment that contains a 483 bp open reading frame encoding 160 amino acids. The pig <I>RPL21</I> gene is located in the “+” strand of chromosome 11, which spans 2167 bp from 4199792 to 4201958. Pig <I>RPL21</I> protein has nine strands and two helices in its secondary structure. Pig <I>RPL21</I> is predominantly expressed in ovary and lung, at lower levels in kidney, small intestine, and skin, and at the lowest levels in heart and liver. Furthermore, <I>RPL21</I> expression is closely connected with cell proliferation and cell cycle arrest. The results are intended to provide useful information for the further study of pig <I>RPL21</I>.</P>
Synthesis of Carbon Nanotube-CuxO(x = 8, 64) Nanocrystal Composites

A simple, rapid and eco-friendly method has been introduced to prepare suboxide CuxO(x = 8, 64)nanocrystals on multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites. The structural characterization by using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction methods indicates that CuxO(x = 8, 64) can be uniformly grown on the sidewalls of carbon nanotube under direct copper deposition at room temperature. Our results suggest that the growth method of nano-CuxO (x = 8, 64) crystals could be used to synthesize other nano-metal suboxides, such as MxO [M=metal;x = 1, 2, 4, 8 and 64]
