Applying the notion of span in audiovisual translation

        ( Park¸ Amy ),( Cho¸ Eui Yon ) 동국대학교 영어권문화연구소 2019 영어권문화연구 Vol.12 No.2

This study sets out to examine how the English pronouns are translated into the Korean subtitles. The main aim of the study is to apply the notion of span when analyzing the translation of pronouns from English into Korean. In other words, this paper would like to argue that the notion of span may well be applied in the study of personal pronouns when the source language and target language have different linguistic systems such as English and Korean. This is to emphasize and also demonstrate the fact that due to the characteristics of the Korean language, the notion of span may be an important factor proposed by Larson in 1984. The data of this study have been divided into certain spans according to certain situations between characters from the film Bridget Jones Diary 1. The results show that the translations of Korean personal pronouns vary according to the spans between certain characters which show that the relationship changes throughout the film.

The Inhibitory Effect of Rosiglitazone on Agonist-Induced or Spontaneous Regulation of Contractility

        Park, Sun-Young,Barber, Amy L.,Sohn, Uy-Dong,Je, Hyun-Dong 대한약학회 2007 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.30 No.4

The present study was undertaker to determine whether rosiglitazone treatment influences on the agonist-induced or spontaneous regulation of vascular smooth muscle contraction and, if so, to investigate the related mechanism. Stimulants were directly added without any preanesthetic stress or spontaneous vasoconstriction was induced by preanesthetic Physical stress where rat aortic ring preparations isolated from rat exposed to preanesthetic stress such as pinch or prick for 30 min were mounted in organ baths and then exposed to contractile agents. Previously and subchronically ingested rosiglitazone decreased Rho-kinase activating agonist-induced contraction but not depolarization- or ${\alpha}$ adrenergic agonist-induced contraction. Moreover, preanesthetic stress induced the stress-induced spontaneous contraction and previously and subchronically ingested rosiglitazone abolished the stress-induced spontaneous contraction. In conclusion, this study provides the evidence and possible related mechanism concerning the vasorelaxing effect go an antidiabetic rosiglitazone as an antihypertensive on the agonist-induced contraction or stress-induced spontaneous vasoconstriction in rat aortic rings regardless of endothelial function.

      • Attitudes and Acceptability of Smart Wear Technology: Qualitative Analysis from the Perspective of Caregivers

Park, Soonjee,Harden, Amy J.,Nam, Jinhee,Saiki, Diana,Hall, Scott S.,Kandiah, Jay The Korean Home Economics Association 2012 International Journal of Human Ecology Vol.13 No.2

Smart wear integrates computing technology into fabric or a garment for additional functionality. This research explored the attitudes and opinions of the use of smart wear from the viewpoint of caregivers. Thirty two individuals including care providers of children and adult family members with health problems participated in focus group interviews. Participants reported being interested in smart wear because of the potential to detect the location (GPS) of a dependent (e.g., child, elderly) and to monitor vital signs. Participants indicated perceived advantages of smart wear such as identifying geographical location and effectiveness. Perceived concerns mentioned were privacy/security issues and accuracy of data. Participants taking care of dependents without a specific disease were hesitant to adopt and pay for smart wear. However, caregivers of elderly individuals expressed positive adoption intentions and willingness to reasonably pay for smart wear. They indicated expectations that potential insurance would provide coverage for cost savings. Caregivers expressed the need of specific requirements for future adoption such as customizability, and comfort/safety. Specific to smart wear clothing, most respondents preferred it be an undershirt or a jacket with a sensor located in the shoulder area. The findings from this study can be used in product development, promotion and marketing of smart wear.

Statistical inference and visualization in scale-space for spatially dependent images

Amy Vaughan,Mikyoung Jun,Cheolwoo Park 한국통계학회 2012 Journal of the Korean Statistical Society Vol.41 No.1

SiZer (SIgnificant ZERo crossing of the derivatives) is a graphical scale-space visualization tool that allows for statistical inferences. In this paper we develop a spatial SiZer for finding significant features and conducting goodness-of-fit tests for spatially dependent images. The spatial SiZer utilizes a family of kernel estimates of the image and provides not only exploratory data analysis but also statistical inference with spatial correlation taken into account. It is also capable of comparing the observed image with a specific null model being tested by adjusting the statistical inference using an assumed covariance structure. Pixel locations having statistically significant differences between the image and a given null model are highlighted by arrows. The spatial SiZer is compared with the existing independent SiZer via the analysis of simulated data with and without signal on both planar and spherical domains. We apply the spatial SiZer method to the decadal temperature change over some regions of the Earth.

Regulation of Ca2+ Signaling in Pulmonary Hypertension

        Amy L. Firth,Jun Yeon Won,Won Sun Park* 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 2013 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.17 No.1

Understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the development and progression of pulmonary hypertension (PH) remains imperative if we are to successfully improve the quality of life and life span of patients with the disease. A whole plethora of mechanisms are associated with the development and progression of PH. Such complexity makes it difficult to isolate one particular pathway to target clinically. Changes in intracellular free calcium concentration, the most common intracellular second messenger, can have significant impact in defining the pathogenic mechanisms leading to its development and persistence. Signaling pathways leading to the elevation of [Ca2+]cyt contribute to pulmonary vasoconstriction, excessive proliferation of smooth muscle cells and ultimately pulmonary vascular remodeling. This current review serves to summarize the some of the most recent advances in the regulation of calcium during pulmonary hypertension.

노인주간보호센터의 노인 건강유형별 제공 프로그램 및 공간구성에 관한 연구 : 충청북도의 사례를 중심으로

        조아미,박영기 한국의료복지시설학회 2008 의료·복지 건축 Vol.14 No.3

The purpose of this study was to propose the Guidelines for the Program and Space of Adult Day Care Center. Recently the Adult Day Care Center is extremely on demand caused by the increasing population of the elderly. In order to provide the affordable and efficient rehabilitation program the architectural setting should be tuned to that purpose. In particular, the adult day center program must have the programs for three kinds of the elderly in terms of health status, for example, Altzheimer's disease, paralysis, and sickly elderly. Therefore this study propose the way of planning the program and spaces to give the appropriate care for Adult Day Care Center.

Larger Remaining Stomach Volume Is Associated With Better Nutrition and Muscle Preservation in Patients With Gastric Cancer Receiving Distal Gastrectomy With Gastroduodenostomy

        Kim, Amy,Lee, Jung-Bok,Ko, Yousun,Park, Taeyong,Jo, Hyeonjong,Jang, Jin Kyoo,Lee, Kyoungsuk,Kim, Kyung Won,Lee, In-Seob The Korean Gastric Cancer Association 2022 Journal of gastric cancer Vol.22 No.2

Purpose: Weight loss and deterioration in body composition are observed in patients with gastric cancer (GC) following gastrectomy. This study aimed to investigate the impact of residual stomach volume (RSV) on the nutritional status and body composition of patients with GC treated with distal gastrectomy. Materials and Methods: In total, 227 patients who underwent minimally invasive distal gastrectomy with Billroth 1 anastomosis for stage I GC between February 2015 and May 2018 were enrolled. Clinicodemographic and laboratory data were collected from the GC registry. The RSV, abdominal muscle area, and subcutaneous/visceral fat areas were measured using computed tomography data. Results: A larger RSV was associated with a lower decrease in the nutritional risk index (P=0.004) and hemoglobin level (P=0.003) during the first 3 months after surgery, and better recovery at 12 months. A larger RSV demonstrated an advantage in the preservation of abdominal muscle area (P=0.02) and visceral fat (P=0.04) after surgery, as well as less reduction in weight (P=0.02) and body mass index (P=0.03). Conclusions: Larger RSV was associated with improved nutritional status and better preservation of muscle and fat after distal gastrectomy.

Acculturation as a frustration-negotiation cycle: North Korean women defectors in South Korea

        윤견수,PARK Amie M. 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2016 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.22 No.4

Ever since the corrupt leadership of North Korea stopped distributing wages and food, men’s role as breadwinners was upended and the family structure has altered. Wives tended to take on both roles, as breadwinners and homemakers because their husbands became unable to provide financial security for their families. North Korea has had a male-dominated family structure, where a man’s authority over his wife far exceeds what is seen in South Korea, where women are quite independent; marriage begins with a romantic relationship, and divorce is not such a disgrace. It was seen that female defectors have tended to exceed male defectors with respect to financial independence. For the latter, one of the main obstacles in cultural adaption is change in political ideology, which did not bother the former to the same extent. While the men struggled with ideological changes, the women approached their circumstances realistically and were more down to earth. In this study, three female defectors, aged 31, 42, and 53 years, participated and shared their stories. Throughout the interviews, they frequently compared their lives in both North and South Korea. The substantial differences between the two locations resulted in major frustration for them. While the participants experienced frustration with regard to their negotiations—or what is referred to as frustration-negotiation in this study—they developed their own sense of judgment and perspectives and began to modify their identities.
