Nano essential oils against the red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

        Abdel‐Raheem Mohamed,ALghamdi Huda A.,Reyad Naglaa F. 한국곤충학회 2020 Entomological Research Vol.50 No.5

The red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, is the biggest pest of various palm species. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the essential oils of purslane, mustard and castor (bulk and nano) on R. ferrugineus and to evaluate the oviposition deterrent effect to prevent new infestations. Prepared concentrations of essential oils (bulk and nano) were tested for their impact on R. ferrugineus larvae, pupae and adults. The most effective oil was purslane oil (bulk and nano), followed by mustard and the least effective was castor. The percent mortality of larvae was 75.2, 45.3 and 17.9% (bulk phase) and 92.5, 84.4 and 65.5% (nano phase) in purslane, mustard and castor, respectively, when treated with the high concentration. The percent mortality of adults was 67.2, 40.0 and 15.6% (bulk phase) and 83.5, 72.9 and 60.0% (nano phase) in purslane, mustard and castor, respectively, when treated with the high concentration. The number of eggs laid decreased with increasing concentration of the tested oils. Purslane essential oil showed good impact on R. ferrugineus larvae and adults followed by mustard and castor oils as bulk and as nano.

Butyrate regulates leptin expression through different signaling pathways in adipocytes

        Mohamed Mohamed Soliman,Mohamed Mohamed Ahmed,Alaa-eldin Salah-eldin,Abeer Abdel-Alim Abdel-Aal 대한수의학회 2011 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.12 No.4

Leptin is an adipocytokine that regulates body weight, and maintains energy homeostasis by promoting reduced food intake and increasing energy expenditure. Leptin expression and secretion is regulated by various factors including hormones and fatty acids. Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid that acts as source of energy in humans. We determined whether this fatty acid can play a role in leptin expression in fully differentiated human adipocytes. Mature differentiated adipocytes were incubated with or without increasing concentrations of butyrate. RNA was extracted and leptin mRNA expression was examined by Northern blot analysis. Moreover, the cells were incubated with regulators that may affect signals which may alter leptin expression and analyzed with Northern blotting. Butyrate stimulated leptin expression, and stimulated mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) and phospho-CREB signaling in a time-dependent manner. Prior treatment of the cells with signal transduction inhibitors as pertusis toxin, Gi protein antagonist, PD98059 (a MAPK inhibitor), and wortmannin (a PI3K inhibitor) abolished leptin mRNA expression. These results suggest that butyrate can regulate leptin expression in humans at the transcriptional level. This is accomplished by: 1) Gi protein-coupled receptors specific for short-chain fatty acids, and 2) MAPK and phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K) signaling pathways.

Early assessment of aspiration risk in acute stroke by fiberoptic endoscopy in critically ill patients

Mohamed Saad Abdelaziz Elsyaad,Akram Muhammad Fayed,Mohamed Mostafa Abdel Salam Megahed,Nesrine Hazem Hamouda,Ahmed Moustafa Elmenshawy 대한중환자의학회 2022 Acute and Critical Care Vol.37 No.3

Background: Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) has been recommended to assess aspiration in stroke. This study aimed to determine the diagnostic and prognostic roles of FEES in the early assessment of aspiration, intensive care unit (ICU) stay and mortality in acute stroke patients. Methods: Fifty-two patients with acute stroke admitted to the Alexandria Main University Hospital were included. Complete examinations and assessment of aspiration using the 8-point penetration-aspiration scale (PAS) with FEES protocol were performed. Results: The patients were classified into three groups: normal with no or low risk of aspiration (n=15, 27.3%; PAS level 1), low to moderate risk (n=8, 14.5%; PAS level 2–4), and high risk (n=32, 58.2%; PAS ≥5). There was high incidence of aspiration pneumonia, prolonged ICU stay, and mortality in both moderate- and high-risk groups (P=0.001, P<0.001, and P<0.001, respectively). The PAS score predicted aspiration pneumonia (hospital-acquired pneumonia) with sensitivity and specificity of 80.0% and 76.0%, respectively (negative predictive value [NPV], 76.0; positive predictive value [PPV], 80.0; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.706–0.940) and mortality with sensitivity and specificity of 88.46% and 68.97% (NPV, 87.0; PPV, 71.9; 95% CI, 0.749–0.951). The PAS score could predict the length of ICU stay with sensitivity and specificity of 70.21% and 87.50, respectively (NPV, 33.3; PPV, 97.1; 95% CI, 0.605–0.906).Conclusions: The standard FEES protocol using PAS score is a useful tool to assess aspiration in acute stroke patients and could be used to predict length of ICU stay and mortality.

Removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution by multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified with 8-hydroxyquinoline: Kinetic study

Mohamed Abdel Salam,Ghalia Al-Zhrani,Samia A. Kosa 한국공업화학회 2014 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.20 No.2

Carbon nanotubes were modified with 8-hydroxyquinoline and used for the removal of Cu(II), Pb(II),Cd(II), and Zn(II) from aqueous solutions. Different instrumentation parameters and methods ofdevelopment for determining metal ions from aqueous solutions using differential pulse anodicstripping voltammetry were studied. The adsorption of heavy metals from aqueous solution by thepristine and modified MWCNTs was studied kinetically using different kinetic models, and the resultsshowed that the adsorption process best fitted the pseudo-second-order model and the Elovich model. The mechanism of adsorption was explored using the intra-particle diffusion model and the liquid-filmmodel.

A Novel Statistical Feature Selection Approach for Text Categorization

Mohamed Abdel Fattah 한국정보처리학회 2017 Journal of information processing systems Vol.13 No.5

For text categorization task, distinctive text features selection is important due to feature space highdimensionality. It is important to decrease the feature space dimension to decrease processing time andincrease accuracy. In the current study, for text categorization task, we introduce a novel statistical featureselection approach. This approach measures the term distribution in all collection documents, the termdistribution in a certain category and the term distribution in a certain class relative to other classes. Theproposed method results show its superiority over the traditional feature selection methods.

Adsorption of nitroaniline onto high surface area nanographene

Mohamed Abdel Salam 한국공업화학회 2015 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.28 No.-

High surface area nanographenes (HSANGs) were used for the adsorption and removal of p-nitroanilinefrom a model solution and wastewater sample. HSANGs were characterized using TEM, STM, and surfacearea analysis, and the results revealed that HSANGs exist as short stacks of transparent platelet-likegraphene sheets with an average thickness of 2.0 nm and a BET specific surface area of 677.5 m2 g 1. Theresults showed that most of the NA was removed from the solution within a few minutes at ambientconditions. The adsorption was analyzed kinetically and the results showed the suitability of the pseudo-second-order model for describing the adsorption kinetics. The thermodynamics study showed that theadsorption process was exothermic in nature, product favored, and associated with an increase inentropy due to the adsorption of NA to the HSANGs surface. The HSANGs exhibited a tremendousadsorption ability to remove NA from a model solution and a wastewater sample.

Synthesis of magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes/magnetite/chitin magnetic nanocomposite for the removal of Rose Bengal from real and model solution

        Mohamed Abdel Salam,Reda M. El-Shishtawy,Abdullah Y. Obaid 한국공업화학회 2014 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.20 No.5

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were physically mixed with biopolymer chitin and magnetite to form a magnetic nanocomposite. The produced MWCNTS/chitin/magnetite (MCM) nanocomposite was characterized using scanning electron microscopy and surface-area analysis, and the magnetic properties were measured using a vibrating-sample magnetometer. The results revealed homogenous distribution of the chitin and magnetite nanoparticles within the MWCNTs in the MCM nanocomposite. The MCM nanocomposite was used to study the removal/adsorption of the well-known organic dye Rose Bengal (RB). The effect of different adsorption parameters was studied and optimized. The adsorption process was studied at different temperatures and the results were analyzed kinetically. Results revealed that the adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Also, it was found that the adsorption of RB occurred in different steps including the diffusion of RB through the boundary layer to the external surface of the MCM nanocomposite, intraparticle diffusion, and adsorption of RB through the MCM nanocomposite particles. The adsorption was analyzed thermodynamically and results revealed spontaneity of the adsorption as the DG8 value was negative and endothermic in nature as the DH8 value was positive, and associated with the increase in the randomness as the DS8 value was positive.

      • Loss of p15INK4b Expression in Colorectal Cancer is Linked to Ethnic Origin

Abdel-Rahman, Wael Mohamed,Nieminen, Taina Tuulikki,Shoman, Soheir,Eissa, Saad,Peltomaki, Paivi Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.5

Colorectal cancers remain to be a common cause of cancer-related death. Early-onset cases as well as those of various ethnic origins have aggressive clinical features, the basis of which requires further exploration. The aim of this work was to examine the expression patterns of $p15^{INK4b}$ and SMAD4 in colorectal carcinoma of different ethnic origins. Fifty-five sporadic colorectal carcinoma of Egyptian origin, 25 of which were early onset, and 54 cancers of Finnish origin were immunohistochemically stained with antibodies against $p15^{INK4b}$ and SMAD4 proteins. Data were compared to the methylation status of the $p15^{INK4b}$ gene promotor. $p15^{INK4b}$ was totally lost or deficient (lost in ${\geq}50%$ of tumor cell) in 47/55 (85%) tumors of Egyptian origin as compared to 6/50 (12%) tumors of Finnish origin (p=7e-15). In the Egyptian cases with $p15^{INK4b}$ loss and available $p15^{INK4b}$ promotor methylation status, 89% of cases which lost $p15^{INK4b}$ expression were associated with $p15^{INK4b}$ gene promotor hypermethylation. SMAD4 was lost or deficient in 25/54 (46%) tumors of Egyptian origin and 28/48 (58%) tumors of Finnish origin. 22/54 (41%) Egyptian tumors showed combined loss/deficiency of both $p15^{INK4b}$ and SMAD4, while $p15^{INK4b}$ was selectively lost/deficient with positive SMAD4 expression in 24/54 (44%) tumors. Loss of $p15^{INK4b}$ was associated with older age at presentation (>50 years) in the Egyptian tumors (p=0.04). These data show for the first time that $p15^{INK4b}$ loss of expression marks a subset of colorectal cancers and ethnic origin may play a role in this selection. In a substantial number of cases, the loss was independent of SMAD4 but rather associated with $p15^{INK4b}$ gene promotor hypermethylation and old age which could be related to different environmental exposures.
