Synthesis and Characterization of Alumina-Zirconia Nanopowders via an Oxalate Route

<P> Nanocrystalline Al2O3-ZrO2 powder was synthesized by a simple method using oxalic acid as a chelating agent. The formation temperature of α - Al2O3 was investigated by differential thermal analysis. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that t-ZrO2 was stabilized in alumina matrix with oxalic acid content 0.5 M and 1 M, respectively. In addition, the data from XRD showed α-Al2O3 and t-ZrO2 phase can be formed at 1100°C with 1 M oxalic acid content. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) micrograph of calcined powders revealed as the oxalic acid content in the precursor solutions is increased from 0.25 M to 0.5 M concentration. The obtained materials could be modified from segregated nanoparticles to agglomerated nanoparticles and finally to large agglomerate with 1 M concentration of oxalic acid. The Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) confirms the formation of α-Al2O3 in corroboration with X-ray studies.</P>
FFDSOGI-PLL-based DSTATCOM for Power Quality Enhancement

This paper proposes a control technique based on a frequency-fixed dual second-order generalized integrator phase-locked loop (FFDSOGI-PLL) for a Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM). The goal is to mitigate power-quality (PQ) issues in a three-phase distribution network with a weak grid. The phase angle, symmetrical components, and positive sequence of supply voltages were estimated using the FFDSOGI-PLL even in a polluted grid environment. The active component magnitude of the fundamental load current was extracted using SOGI, which also reduces the PQ issues by generating compensating current. The effectiveness of the proposed FFDSOGI-PLL-based DSTATCOM was verified for functions like load balancing, power factor correction (PFC), harmonics reduction, etc. This was done in MATLAB/SIMULINK under steadystate and dynamic conditions. The simulation results show that the FFDSOGI-PLL-based control algorithm has faster convergence and quick dynamic response. Hence, the DSTATCOM performance is satisfactory for mitigating PQ issues with the FFDSOGI-PLL-based control technique.

Titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) is very widely used in the fabrication of advanced industrial equipment, combat vehicles, gas turbines, spacecraft and so on. The preferred welding process for titanium alloy is gas tungsten arc (GTA) welding due to its comparatively easier applicability and better economy. However, welding of titanium alloy leads to grain coarsening at the fusion zone and the heat-affected zone, and this often results in inferior weld mechanical properties and poor resistance to hot cracking. Hence, in this investigation an attempt has been made to refine the fusion zone microstructure of titanium alloy by using a pulsed current GTA welding process instead of a constant current GTA welding process. Further mathematical models were developed by means of a response surface method, which enabled the process parameters to be optimized to achieve a minimum grain size and maximum hardness in GTA welding of the alloy under study. The parameter optimization involved the use of a response surface, contour plots and Kuhn-Tucker conditions.

Ionizing radiation (IR) is known as a classical mutagen capable of inducing various kinds of stable and unstable chromosomal aberrations (CA) including the possibility of increasing the incidence of DNA damage. This study aims to assess occupationally induced CA in workers chronically exposed to low doses of IR in Radiology (RL), Cardiology (CL) and Orthopedic (OL) Laboratories in hospitals of Tamil Nadu. We performed the analysis of CA by trypsin G-banding, micronucleus (MN) assay, Comet assay and Xenobiotic-metabolizing gene polymorphisms (GSTM1, GSTT1 and GSTP1) in 56 exposed and 56 control subjects who were matched for gender and age (+/-2 years). Higher degree of CA and MN frequencies were observed in exposed groups, especially in CL subjects compared to other exposed groups and controls (p<0.05). Higher frequency of DNA tail length and tail moment was observed in the CL exposed subjects compared to the RL and OL subjects. The frequencies of GSTM1 and GSTT1 null genotypes were 39.3 percent and 14.3 percent, respectively. No significant difference in allele frequencies between exposed subjects and controls were observed (p=0.0128). Using multiple linear regression analysis, statistical significance was determined for work duration and age for the CL, RL and OL workers and the examination of the possible impact by confounding factors showed few significant influences on the radiation exposure, as a specific biomarker. However, the findings from the present study suggest that, awareness should be created among the personnel exposed to radiations in hospital laboratories, highlighting the necessity of applying radiation protection principles against medical radiation exposure.

Fusion welding of cast A319 (Al-Si-Cu) alloy will lead to many problems including porosity, micro-fissuring, and hot cracking. Friction Stir Welding (FSW) can be used to weld A319 alloy without these defects. In this investigation, an attempt has been made to study the effect of FSW process parameters on the tensile strength of A319 alloy welded joints. Joints were made using different combinations of tool rotation speed, welding speed, and axial force, each at four levels. The quality of weld zone was analyzed using macrostructure and microstructure analysis. Tensile strength of the joints were evaluated and correlated with the weld zone microstructure. The joint fabricated with a 1200 rpm tool rotation speed, 40 mm/min welding speed, and 4 kN axial force showed superior tensile strength compared with the other joints. In this paper we introduce the concept of fuzzy ${\beta}-compact^*$ spaces. Besides giving some interesting properties of fuzzy ${\beta}-compact^*$ spaces we also give a characterization on fuzzy $\beta$-compact spaces by making use of newly introduced concept of fuzzy $\beta$-filters.

In this paper the concept of somewhat pairwise fuzzy continuous functions and somewhat pairwise fuzzy open functions are introduced. Some interesting properties of these functions are investigated besides giving some characterizations of these functions.
