        Probing Cultural Elements within Literature: A Lesson Plan to Expand Understanding

        The integration of language, literature, and culture in the foreign language classroom is a challenge to educationists who struggle to devise a way to achieve the goal of raising individuals equipped with communicative skills founded on solid intercultural understanding. This paper explores teaching strategies that move away from the traditional teacher-centered foreign language literature instruction model and embrace more actively a learner-centered model in which groupwork and workshop-style presentation were introduced to the classroom. Using 9.11.01: The Skyscraper and the Airplane by Adam Goodheart as the main reading text, students engaged in close reading of the literary text, group projects in preparation for class presentation, and workshop-style class discussions. The process enabled students to reflect upon their reading strategies used in understanding the text, method of research for information, and interpersonal and presentation skills. Incorporating cultural factors related to literary texts with learner-centered group projects proved an effective way for students to become motivated learners and critical thinkers in addition to building knowledge on cultural matters and communicative skills.

        Prognosis of patients with axillary lymph node metastases from occult breast cancer: analysis of multicenter data

        Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate prognosis of patients with level I/II axillary lymph node metastases from occult breast cancer (OBC). Materials and Methods: Data of 53 patients with OBC who received axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) positive/negative (+/-) breast-conserving surgery between 2001 and 2013 were retrospectively collected at seven hospitals in Korea. The median number of positive lymph nodes (+LNs) was 2. Seventeen patients (32.1%) had >3 +LNs. A total of 48 patients (90.6%) received radiotherapy. Extents of radiotherapy were as follows: whole-breast (WB; n = 11), regional lymph node (RLN; n = 2), and WB plus RLN (n = 35). Results: The median follow-up time was 85 months. Recurrence was found in four patients: two in the breast, one in RLN, and one in the breast and RLN. The 5-year and 7-year disease-free survival (DFS) rates were 96.1% and 93.5%, respectively. Molecular subtype and receipt of breast radiotherapy were significantly associated with DFS. Patients with estrogen receptor negative, progesterone receptor negative, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative (ER-/PR-/HER2-) subtype had significantly lower 7-year DFS than those with non-ER-/PR-/HER2- tumor (76.9% vs. 100.0%; p = 0.03). Whole breast irradiation (WBI) was significantly associated with a higher 7-year DFS rate (94.7% for WBI group vs. 83.3% for non-WBI group; p = 0.01). Other factors including patient’s age, number of +LNs, taxane chemotherapy, and RLN irradiation were not associated with DFS. Conclusion: Patients with OBC achieved favorable outcome after ALND and breast-targeting treatment. Molecular subtype and receipt of WBI was significant factors for DFS.

        Utility of Anxiety Scales in Translation Education: Test of the Translation Apprehension Test (TAT)

        Research has shown that significant foreign language anxiety is experienced by many students with respect to some aspects of foreign language learning (Horwitz, Horwitz, & Cope, 1986). This study picks up on such a premise to examine whether such results apply to translation education. The purpose of this study is to test the reliability and validity of the Translation Apprehension Test (TAT) adapted from the Writing Apprehension Test by Daly and Miller (1975). A factor analysis is conducted to examine whether the test items form factors that can explain the anxiety experienced by students. The study also examines the relationship between translation anxiety and translation performance to see whether anxiety deters translation performance as it does foreign language. Implications for teaching are also included.

        Global Functional Analysis of Butanol-Sensitive Escherichia coli and Its Evolved Butanol-Tolerant Strain

        Butanol is a promising alternative to ethanol and is desirable for use in transportation fuels and additives to gasoline and diesel fuels. Microbial production of butanol is challenging primarily because of its toxicity and low titer of production. Herein, we compared the transcriptome and phenome of wild-type Escherichia coli and its butanol-tolerant evolved strain to understand the global cellular physiology and metabolism responsible for butanol tolerance. When the ancestral butanol-sensitive E. coli was exposed to butanol, gene activities involved in respiratory mechanisms and oxidative stress were highly perturbed. Intriguingly, the evolved butanol-tolerant strain behaved similarly in both the absence and presence of butanol. Among the mutations occurring in the evolved strain, cis-regulatory mutations may be the cause of butanol tolerance. This study provides a foundation for the rational design of the metabolic and regulatory pathways for enhanced biofuel production.

        Facilitating the Process of ‘Deverbalization’ and ‘Reformulation’ through Subtitle Translation

        The purpose of this study is to introduce audiovisual translation as an effective teaching material for helping students achieve the basic understanding of the process of achieving equivalence in translation. This study identifies types/categories of translation where deverbalization and reformulation can be effectively utilized, shows how challenges in translating can be resolved through deverbalization and reformulation, and provides evidence that audiovisual translation is an effective training tool for students to utilize deverbalization and reformulation as a translation strategy. The results of the study show that the use of deverbalization and reformulation strategies can yield high-quality translation during audiovisual translation. The strategies were especially effective in the following areas: words/idioms, character relationship, sentence conversion /structural adjustment, cultural/historical background, domestification, addition, understanding context and humor. Through the use of audiovisual translation as a learning material, students are expected to better grasp the concept of deverbalization and reformulation and extend these strategies in other types of translation material.

        Transitivity in the Translation classroom : Its value as a Means of Instruction

        This study focuses on the changes an inanimate subject of the original text goes through in the translation process and offer suggestions and strategies for both students and instructors. Translations submitted by students were used as data for the analysis. Sentences with inanimate subjects and their translations were collected from each text. Two sets of translations were selected for each sentence for comparison. The transitivity model proposed by Halliday(1985) was used to analyze inaminate sentences in the texts as the frame of analysis. The most effective translation of inanimate sentences that fall on the six categories proposed by Halliday converted the sentence structures in a variety of forms; conditional, inversion, adverb phrase and clause, elaboration, shift in tense, etc. The strategies can be used as a guideline for students and encourage them to break away from the word-for-word translation and concentrate on delivering the message.

        <B>ABSTRACT</B><P><I>Paenibacillus polymyxa</I> E681, a spore-forming, low-G+C, Gram-positive bacterium isolated from the rhizosphere of winter barley grown in South Korea, has great potential for agricultural applications due to its ability to promote plant growth and suppress plant diseases. Here we present the complete genome sequence of <I>P. polymyxa</I> E681. Its 5.4-Mb genome encodes functions specialized to the plant-associated lifestyle and characteristics that are beneficial to plants, such as the production of a plant growth hormone, antibiotics, and hydrolytic enzymes.</P>

        Vocabulary Selection and Modification in English Textbook Production : A Case Study

        The purpose of this study is to test the applicability and practicality of the Guidelines for the Use and Selection of Vocabulary for English Textbooks issued by KICE (Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation). The Guidelines, issued to authors and publishers of middle school and high school English textbooks, lay down the guidelines fir the selection and use of vocabulary. The study examined the types of vocabulary that had to be readjusted while trying to observe the guidelines and how the content had to be altered as a result. A tenth grade English textbook was analyzed for this purpose. Types of words that were replaced the most were borrowed words, compound words, and derivative words. Sentences either had to be altered structurally or content-wise, and the results were not always for the better. It is recommended that a more flexible guideline be in place so that authors may work with more freedom in the creation of textbooks and offer students with opportunities to acquire a variety of vocabulary in a more natural context.

        The Need for Level-based Criteria in the Assessment of Oral Proficiency

        The purpose of this study is to identify the most important factor(s) that contribute(s) to the overall oral proficiency and to examine whether the factor(s) play(s) a different role depending on the proficiency level of learners. Learners were divided into novice group and advanced group and were asked to produce an oral recording of a story based on a comic strip. The recordings were transcribed and graded by three raters. According to the results, the raters attained high inter-rater reliability when assessing advanced learners. However, the reliability level became considerably lower in the assessment of novice learners. The best predictor of oral proficiency among novice learners was sociolinguistic competence and fluency, while grammatical competence and fluency were the strongest predictors for advanced learners. The results suggest the need for a separate assessment tool for different proficiency levels and the need for a different focus in the classroom depending on the learners’ proficiency level.
